A new edition of the memorable HEROQUEST board game. Welcome back to the adventure. Do you want to become a legend?

We don't discover anything if we say that there was a 'before' and an 'after' in our lives after meeting HeroQuest. I have read it put in many ways, but all of them have the same roots of dreaming, thanksgiving and nostalgia in common.

Months ago, a partner of mine shared a link which led to a change.org petition. It was, at least, a wholehearted petition, but hiding an urge that, surprisingly enough, many of us shared without knowing: we would like to see HeroQuest as a living product once again.

A conmemorative edition was demanded for to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

When I talked about it with a friend, he made me understand that the petition was really open, not focused to a single company. It was a petition made mainly to two big fishes, but open to any third party.

It was practically as if someone had put up a challenge. And what we did at GameZone was to accept it.

After that came weeks of studying the legal aspects of the matter and getting in touch with people who could allow us to face this project.

We quickly knew that no big fish was going to undertake this endeavour. It was complicated, costly and there was not enough time. Big companies have to plan their strategies with plenty of time, and none of them had announced anything nor planned to. The time left to get it done was simply too little. But not for a small fish.

We could react in time and focus all our efforts in the development of this conmemorative edition. It was now or never. Or we got to the task right away, or no one would. And there would be no HeroQuest 25th Anniversary Edition.

The time lapse we have to achieve our goal is small, but enough for us. With the fundings raised thanks to this crowdfunding initiative we will be able to end the creative stage and prototypes, so we can start producing the actual components by early 2014. We have the knowledge and the tools, not the funds. The money we now ask for. With the right funding this HeroQuest 25th Anniversary Edition will see the light just in time for next year Christmas period, fulfilling the desires of countless fans, among which we are included.

LET'S GIVE THIS CLASSIC THE TRIBUTE IT DESERVES

UPDATE ABOUT KS PAUSE

Dear Backers

Last Friday we were surprised by the pause placed on our kickstarter Project of HQ25. We wrote a communiqué to you, which was also posted on our site heroquestclassic.com. In our letter we tried to communicate to you in the clearest fashion what was happening and as well to share with you all, our petition to kickstarter to have the project reopened. To do all of this publicly was to us the correct way for you as our backers to be informed of the situation and the most correct and transparent way to communicate with you as well, as our backers you have the right to know what was going on with this project.

We have done what you have ask for, we have waited in silence for KS’ answer. It has arrived. KS would prefer to keep the project on hold and wait for us to come to an agreement with third part.
The KS answer can be seen at this LINK.
KS’ position does not agree with as at all. The situation produced by the pause of the project has been harmful.

We do not feel that our legitimate rights over the Trademark have been protected and above all we do not wish to do business with third part under threats or duress of any sort. As a result we are proceeding to solicit KS to cancel our project on their platform.

Is this the end of HQ25? Of course not! Keep reading!
We accept the all of the respectful critics that has come our way because we learn from these things and if someone thinks differently they are free to express those opinions. What we do not accept is the disinformation y distortions that have been happening during the project's pause on KS in which we have remained silent and waited.

During these past few days our creative design crew has still been working on the development of various components, the same as always, the idea being to not lose any energy with this controversy.
The thirteen on the gallows, as we have fondly started calling the 13 professionals that are implicated in the creation of the project, have as a priority the development of this commemorative game.

We are truly more worried about you, the backers. We want thank you for the messages of support that have been rolling in. The public reaction to the news of a new edition of this classic provided undeniable and sincere joy to many. We will hold onto this as the rout to follow.

After this communiqué is sent out we will proceed to ask KS to cancel the project on their platform. After this is done we will immediately restart and continue the HQ25 project. More info at heroquestclassic.com. Therefore the HQ25 project will return to active status. We will move from victims to survivors and conquer as we go.

We understand that KS has a larger public base than any other crowed funding platform today; we understand that moving the project to another site will mean that out backer support will decrease. However we are ready and willing to continue this campaign in a place that will offer us the correct guaranties for our trademark. We would prefer to raise fewer funds and still move forward with and produce it in time for the 25th anniversary.

We await your support and enthusiasm in this renewed crowed funding campaign.
Again, we would like to thank our backers from the bottom of our hearts, please do not regret supporting us. Let us all together get this back on track and make this dream a reality.

Gamezone Team

Old information on the Kickstarter suspension:
[spoiler]
Hi there,

This is a message from Kickstarter Support. We're writing to inform you that a project you backed, Heroquest 25th Anniversary, is the subject of an intellectual property dispute.

The project has been removed from public view until the dispute is resolved, which can take up to 30 days. The project’s funding and the countdown to its deadline have been stopped. If the project becomes available again, the countdown will continue and the new deadline will extend past the original deadline for as much time as the project was unavailable. You can find out more by reading our Copyright Policy and our Trademark Policy.

Original deadline: Friday Dec 27, 11:00pm GMT
Time remaining if project becomes available: 29 days

Your pledge is currently still active. If you’d like to manage your pledge or reach out to the creator directly, you can still do so through the project page:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2113976860/heroquest-25th-anniversary?ref=email

Thanks so much for your patience and cooperation,
Kickstarter

Gamezone's Perspective on the issue:
We would like to inform you all about the present situation, after the pause of our Kickstarter project by Moon Design P. during the thanksgiving holiday, which is an administrative petition within Kickstarter.

Yesterday, Friday, at the start of the day, U.S. east coast time, we sent a letter to Kickstarter, LINK invoking our legitimate trademark rights so they would deactivate the pause and let us progress in the fund raising campaign. We are waiting for Kickstarter’s reply on this matter.

Simultaneously we, Gamezone and Moon Design P., had a reunion to discuss this issue face to face as and not email exchange as was what was happening up till now.

Moon Design P. solicited the pause in Kickstarter because of fear that Hasbro could act against Gamezone in our crowed funding because we are using an American company on American soil. Their argument was that Hasbro could act against them as well for not impeding us in this project. Even thought they are not in any way included in this project or affiliated with it.

If Kickstarter does not reactivate the pause taking into account our letter ( indicated above in the link), then it can only be reactivated if Moon Design P. asks them to. For Moon Design P. to do so they are asking for two things: An official letter from Hasbro in which it states that they, Hasbro, will neither act against our HQ25th nor Moon Design P. They, Moon Design P., have also demanded a considerable sum and percentages from the Kickstarter project.

If we wait for Hasbro to make a declaration, which we can solicit, weeks or even months could pass. With that our production and creation calendar would be severely affected, as not having the funding to continue the campaign.

If the Campaign does not restart soon, the HQ25th will not be ready for Christmas 2014. It will not be ready to celebrate its anniversary.

There exist 3 possible solutions to this conundrum.

1. Kickstarter reactivates the project attending to our petition
2. Wait for Hasbro to declare that they are not against this crowed funding campaign of HQ25th en Kickstarter (an American Company).
3. Immediately move the crowed funning to a platform within Europe, where no risks of legal repercussions exist.

Option one; we can only wait, we cannot be sure that Kickstarter will lift the pause. We cannot influence their decision any more than we have already.

Option two; Hasbro is not obligated to do anything at all.

Option three; here there is no risk, except of course we will raise less funds, no other platform out there at this moment has the same public pull as Kickstarter.

Why are we telling you this? As our backers, what would you like us to do?

Moon Design Publications's Perspective:
Hello all,

We want to give some background on the dispute surrounding Gamezone’s Kickstarter campaign to launch a remake of the hybrid board game/roleplaying game originally published by Milton Bradley called “Heroquest”.

Last week, Moon Design petitioned Kickstarter to remove the crowdfunding campaign for Gamezone’s “Heroquest” game. “Heroquest” is the registered US trademark of Moon Design and is the name of our “Heroquest” roleplaying game and assorted products. To allow a game using the same name to be promoted in the United States through Kickstarter without a license would be an unacceptable dilution of our brand and create market confusion to our detriment.

The trademark “Heroquest” is registered by Francis Greg Stafford with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (Registration Number 4082281) for use in game book manuals. Moon Design Publications LLC has the exclusive license for use of that trademark. For some time now we have been working on creating a board game called “Heroquest” pertaining to the mythology of Glorantha and an updated version of our Heroquest roleplaying game.

The project by Gamezone, a Spanish game company, proposes to remake a role-playing/board game originally produced by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop in 1989. The project calls their game “Heroquest” which is identical to our registered mark and easily confused with it.

Gamezone initially asked us for use of the Heroquest trademark on July 31, 2013. The next day we asked them if they could provide us with a copy of any written agreement with Hasbro to produce a 25th Anniversary Edition of Hasbro’s board game. Gamezone did not provide us with any written confirmation (and as of this date still has not done so). On August 26, 2013, we informed Gamezone by email that we must decline their request.

Despite being explicitly refused permission to use our trademark, Gamezone went ahead and launched this Kickstarter. As a New York State corporation, Kickstarter is subject to US trademark laws and the use of our trademark in the campaign was a violation of those laws.We told Gamezone that they needed to immediately get a licensing agreement from us (which, among other things, would require that they pay us for the rights to the name since it would mean foregoing our opportunity to release our game using our trademark and to compensate us for that lost revenue).

Gamezone did not get back to us within the period we set, and rather than have this end up in litigation (which could also bring in other parties with IP at stake), we asked Kickstarter to suspend the campaign. We then spoke to Gamezone informing them that we had certain non-negotiable demands for any license agreement, among them a statement that Gamezone has explicit permission from Hasbro to make this game based on their IP. Gamezone has assured us that they can get such permission, but until we see confirmation, we cannot responsibly license our trademark to be used in this Kickstarter campaign.

We sympathize with the fans of the Milton Bradley game who enthusiastically supported this project. We strongly support Kickstarter and the revitalization of old games with a loyal following. However, such activities must be done with the consent of the trademark holder and of any other legal owners of the property.

Regards,
Rick Meints

It's mentioned that they will be making it in multiple languages, so you should be able to buy an English copy, but you'll still have to buy it in Spain

The rights to Hero Quest have been in limbo for quite some time. The original was produced by Milton Bradley (now part of Hasbro) and Games Workshop (infamous) and it took place in the Warhammer world. I have no idea how GameZone got the rights to produce the game.

looking at the source of the news, I think gamezone only has rights to use the "name" HeroQuest in spain, the game it will be a customized versión of heroquest to skip some copyright/rights

Is meant the new edition will not be with the consent of Hasbro / gw. Gamezone use the name only, because Hasbro or GW forgot to renew the license of HeroQuest name in Spain.

Exactly my thinking!

Gamezone have made some wonderful little miniatures (think their fantasy undead and dwarves especially are some of the best on the market, even if the price is a little prohibitive) - in short, looking forward to this and let's hope some enterprising Spanish companies make it easily available for overseas purchase..

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Some further details from that thread (courtesy of Google translate)

I have added bold..

.. That I can tell you the game is scheduled to leave in 2014, for its 25th anniversary , but at the end of the year and will have a good prototype of the game. The name of the game will HeroQuest Classic is going to take to Kickstarter, and This Will Be Their 25th Anniversary version (deluxe edition), With Possibility to distribute THROUGHOUT 2014. I Asked them would cost (Because They wanted to take a shock) and Have assured me that the price is not very high, I can say that prices never overtake as the Descent V2 , and I Hope That They Can finally get it out I've been told MSRP (TOP SECRET) . Counting all production going to try take from within Spain (except says probably will make Q. ..). The design and production of miniatures and scenery are Themselves, so it is a great asset with Which doing lot and a good guarantee of success . Here's the design as 3D model will be one of the orcs of HeroQuest Classic - 25th Anniversary Of course the game will be released in Spanish! but from here , produce all materials in multiple languages, Inglés, Italian, French, German ... will keep you Informed ...

Other interesting titbits, info on how Gamezone are doing this..
Report YES have the rights to Spain, which means that here YES will be able to create the game with the name of HeroQuest but for example not be distributed in the U.S. ... that I could not, that already had spoken long ago, but now whether to power, and what they do . In other countries (like the U.S., UK, France, Italy, Germany ...) will not be distributed, but from here are going to translate the game in all languages they want (I have not said before, but also result the RUSSIAN) and anyone can buy it here Naming rights are in no Stephen (Stephen Backer is the creator of the original game, which worked for MB), brand rights were Greg Stafford in the U.S. and other countries, Hasbro acquired then, then recovered, but is that in Spain and other countries was Hasbro yet ...

Game is not just KS, will go on general release..
His intention is to go out in KS (in its 25th year) to seek more funding, But Also is distributing this release 25th anniversary, eleven funded THROUGHOUT the remainder of 2014! The game WILL NOT ONLY KS (although still being Studied crowdfunding, May in the end get funding otherwise.) So the game will be distributed in Spain outside of Kickstarter or other crowdfunding platform type but from 2015 will be the Regular edition (Which still eat with a jug of things : D).

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I'm not sure - reading through the thread it sounds like there were 3 separate distribution 'rights' areas - . US, UK and Spain originally. Gamezone have the rights to the Spanish version. Apparently the guy who made the original version of the game disappeared off to America after designed Space Crusade and has not been heard of in the field since, so in that regard it probably will be a 'fake' I suppose!

Another English language summary:

GameZone Spanish company will create a new HeroQuest 25th aniversary edition.
- They have distribution rights to Spain but not to other countries, but They Will release the game in multiple languages and there are plenty of spanish online shops with worldwide shipment.
- They may use a crowdfunding campaign but it's not confirmed.
- There Will Be INITIALLY four heroes in male and female versions.
- Furniture and tokens will be all in 3D (resin) instead of cardboard.
- The board will be reversible (two in one).
- There will not be fimirs, but there will be equivalent reptilian creatures.
- It will not be overly expensive (in Line with Descent V2). PS: Here's another to be shared one par ... at least.

I still have a mostly intact copy of Heroquest that gets a run out every now and again but I'd definitely pick this up and merge the 2 (I even have a Spanish mailing address if needs be ). I assume they mean Indiegogo rather than KS isn't KS restricted to US, UK and Canada how would that work if they can only distribute in Spain.

FINE BY ME.

It's about freaking time someone gets the cahones to try and emulate Heroquest.

Many have tried, few have succeeded, right?

Heroquest was like the perfect storm at the time- pricepoint, pieces, replayability... it was such a perfect gateway game!

If they want to crowdfund this for a reasonable price I'm all in.

Especially if it means I can stop checking out ebay for a reasonably priced copy to introduce to my kids.

Rename it "Quest of Heroes" or somesuch for international release?

Heroic Quest?

Hero Journey?

Champion Quest?

So is this being developed by the original designer? I always figured HQ was done in house at Games Workshop. I would imagine if they can get the right vibe without upsetting any slumbering dragons this could be a big one crowdfunding-- wise.

Maybe we'll get a 25th anniversary Space Crusade too.

Not that there's a market for EITHER of these two games. Oh no... Heaven forbid we try and make gateway board games anymore to start kids on their journey. Or all the former kids who are now parents and want to introduce the hobby to the next generation.... never ceases to amaze me that nobody tried to bring these games back.

I vote they name it "Totally not Hero Quest wink wink nudge nudge."

And I'll be interested to see this. Certainly an odd turn of events that a relatively small player like Gamezone snags the rights to something that's potentially very very profitable. Didn't Gamezone formulate their own restic mix of some sort recently too? I imagine the minis in the game will be made of that.
