Did the center sort of not snap the ball?

Normally the defensive line would pile in at the snap.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

He technically did but it didn't look like due to the QB's 'play fake'

I saw a similar one a while back when the centre handed off to the qb over his shoulder and the qb just ran up th field as the defence hadn't reacted (again to weird looking snap)

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

If I were refereeing I would disallow the touchdown.

By indicating there was something wrong with the ball the indication was for an emergency cessation of play.

No one knew what was wrong with the ball only that play was presumably unfair or unsafe with it was it was. Thus people stop playing.

Bad call if the touchdown was allowed and bad call if it is supported as clever, its just crying wolf.

I can imagine this happens next.

"Stop somerthing I require for safety is loose "
or
"Stop I am hurt."

"We darent stop in case this is a trick. Lets scum down on you."

Nothing big or clever about that ignorant stunt.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Seen this and done this a few times in rugby.

It's especially good against tired or whiney teams.

Roll your foot over the ball, pick it up and start complaining that is flat or the oppo aren't far enough back. I've never seen it that well sold before though, I'll bet that defensive team are embarrassed - the blokes actually waving their arms asking for a ball are probably hiding their faces at the moment.

Yeah there's a difference between a 'trick' play like this where you are just working off what might be a technicality that the whistle hasn't been blown to pause the game, and actual trick plays like when you dummy out of a scrum, let it break up and run the number 8 up through the guts.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Any coach I know tells their players to consider the ball in play until they hear the ref blow the whistle, as this high school team learned the hard way:

C-c-c-combo post. And yeah I agree with that, we always play to the whistle, but that doesn't mean that you build strategies around abusing that aspect of the game, it is poor sportsmanship. That's like pretending to be injured in soccer, or refusing to walk in cricket even when you are damn well out. But maybe its the exposure to games like cricket and players like Gilchrist which makes me think that sportsmanship is more important than winning.

I don't think that it's an ongoing strategy they built. Just one of those inspiration of the moment kind of things like you'd see in movies like "The Longest Yard".

I guess I just don't see how that redeems it. Their inspiration of the moment is abuse a system present in the game to score some cheap points? As I said, I'm fine with genuine tricky, well thought out plays, just not things like the one in the OP.

Based entirely on watching about half of a George Clooney movie while I was on a plane, as I understand it American Football developed from a series of smal leagues where dodgy plays were fairly common place. So perhaps there is still a different culture to American Football that to other ball sports, where manipulating the rules is just fine. From what I've seen of it on the tv it certainly seems like it's the ultimate RAW sport.

I mean, personally my reaction to the video was the same as Orlanth and co, that the guy was basically cheating, not being clever. But then I grew up with sports like cricket and AFL, where there are unwritten principles of how one ought to play, as well as actual rules. Perhaps we're looking at it through that culture, rather than the culture of American Football.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Interesting, that number 2 on your top 10 list is very similar to what I was talking about re: running through the scrum. Good play.

For myself, I enjoy a good bit of trickery.

Some of you guys actually think that was 'cheap' or unsportsmanlike?

Defense messed up by not wrecking the QB, simple as that.
Caught that flatfooted, they deserved to get scored on.

Is this 'unsportsmanlike' too?

No. The QB and center aren't doing anything intentionally misleading there, that's just the defensive line being really confused by an unconventional snap and strange QB actions. You can even see their reactions of "What is he doing?"

The OP's video shows an intentional misdirection by the QB that could be interpreted as him actually trying to stop the play for a safety reason then taking advantage whilst everyone on the other team attempts to correct what they believe is an actual issue. Look at the Defense's reactions. This isn't "What going on?", it's "Hey, we need a new ball, this guy says there's something wrong with this one."

Two very different situations to my eyes.

Probably not counted:

NFHS Rule 9.9.3: "Actions or verbiage designed to confuse the defense into believing there is a problem and a snap isn't imminent is beyond the scope of sportsmanship and is illegal."

I thought you were never ever talking to me again because I'd been such a big meanie.

Also, I'm saying that it seems like people who play and follow American Football seem to view the play in a different light to people who grew up playing and watching other codes of football. I'm not certain that's true because I've only seen a few games and half of a fictional movie while on a plane, but it seemed worth suggesting.

Never said that. Just said few of my responses would be serious. Like this one.

But of course the movie leathernecks should totally be taken as gospel in regards to American football.
