NCR is a "next best ending" it seems, but they do tax the heck out of people, and are a bit stifley, the legion is brutal and harsh. House is tyranny of the old school

the game environments on locations of specific 'places of interests' are comparatively VERY accurate. settlements, installations, caverns. you name it. even Goodsprings, where the game begins, is an accurate simulation of this cowboy movie ghosttown. and so does the rail lines.
The backstory said that the the rail line saw in the game is built parrallelling the Interstate - 15 Highway, it goes to the place that EXISTS in real life. including Sloan quarry (also some quests provided by miners). it is built on the orders of NCR military command, AKA Military railroad, and its construction is VERY akin to River Kwai 'Death Railway'. built by the 'slave labor' (NCR is keen to use convicts, levy them to built rail line protrounding from Barstow/Hub, all the way northeast to the Hoover Dam.. (this should be 'reconstruction' of the prewar Union Pacific/BNSF line!! I-15 shown up MUCH later) this is effectively slavery, but it is politically corrected) well. real life rail line doesn't hop along with small humps, rather these humps should be dug out (or blasted away with EXPLOSIVES!). I guess that this line is still active, yet there's another line going to a tunnen not being rebuilt (isn't it?), visible on the way towards Novac (on main quest route,) surely this one is BNSF line going south towards Cajon pass (correct??), and also goes to LA (and it goes to a city of Santa Fe* too!) too bad NCR ignored this route. well how do the track crews acquire logs in postwar world? and why do the steel rails seen made of plain piece of rectangular steel beam rather than the iconic ][ Beam?? did the steel mills in NCR lost any knownhow to make proper railroad track?
There's a photo album online somewhere where a guy went about taking pictures of the game's real life locations and comparing them to the in game ones. A texture pack on the Fallout Nexus (Poco Buneo/ NME) also changes the in game textures for hi res ones based on photographs of the actual buildings that they're based on, which is kind of cool ...if you can run it.
I wouldn't call what the NCR are doing with the railways "slavery". To do so's kind of white washing the whole prison labour system that's in place in the real world. I mean look at the American manufacturing economy, how much of that's bolstered by prisoners? Then look at China...
Why leave your prisoners sitting about all day when they could be helping out your country? I'd rather not discuss the ethics of real world prison labour however, as questioning the morals of certain situations may descend this thread into a political discussion.
The NCR only has limited resources mind, so that may be why certain routes haven't been repaired. That or they were supposed to, but the Powder Gangers quit working before they could be. Remember that the prisoners did blow up a lot of the lines which they had been repairing after they rebelled too.
Why do the rails in game not full represent real life ones? I dunno, maybe the artist working on them just picked any old type of track or something, not knowing the difference? Hey send the artist or Chris Avellone/Josh Sawyer and email and they'll probably tell you.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So here's the ex-doll house.
This is the front btw.
And this is the rear. The house is made from two of the same front piece stuck together, I just removed the awning thing from the back part.
Oh and the interior's unpainted in case anyone notices. I didn't bother with adding furniture or painting it as nobody will probably look. There's stickers of rugs, paintings, and other crap though which I left on in case someone does look in. I suppose all the fixtures were torn off by looters or for firewood. All that junk about the building's base is supposed to be for barricading up the home's windows (or its been torn off them), but I suppose the owners didn't finish.
I'll need to keep my eye out for more of these. A whole neighbourhood would be cool. Just over two weeks till the wargaming shows start, here's hoping I'll be up to my eyes in debt by the end of them (um, I mean I'll be completely responsible with my money).
Anyone know any companies which make bare trees? I had a look about the local model shops yesterday, but none of them sells any (apparently they're too expensive to buy in. Yeah trees with foliage are cheaper than those without...). Modelzone did some, but they went into administration. Papa needs himself some dead trees. =(
I began painting the train station too as is the mud hut primed. I'd like to finish them them now (unpainted stuff can remain unpainted for ages, but I hate having primed models sitting about), though yeah, those shacks need done. Must stop distracting myself. Saying that I may give some charity shops a search tomorrow for cool things. =P

Nice! that house looks like the ones where you have to disarm all the mines with the crazy old sniper taking pot shots at you.
As for bare trees, wires skeletons with clay/putty, paper mache would work, whichever is cheaper, usually paper mache.

I've seen that website before but there should be alot more REAL LIFE VS IN GAME comparision! also NCR Cosplay over the strip meow~
Among settlements seen in the game. Only Novac is 'fictional' because it's based on a motel with a T-Rex statue. the motel itself located far far away. the main purpose of in-game settlement is to be 'mining town'. a function of waystation comes with caravan to Vegas itself.
About 'bright brotherhood' faction. there's a quest that.. if player helped them ALL THERE and DO IT GOOD (reset the rocket navigation to land closer to the intended target). the ending witll said that these ghouls will visit Novac to help the townsfolk fending off ANY NCR annexation attempts (or evacuating an entire town agains the Legion onslaught if player helped the Legion in final quest). is that an indication that the Bright Brotherhood DID go to the star and meet with their 'god' and find any cure? or is the 'promised land' they talked about actually lies somewhere within Solar system?

Trying out my new camera. I'm still iffy about it and trying to work out how the thing actually works, but how're these looking? Better than the old camera I hope.
The flash is a little strong. You can see the shadows it produces about the bottom right of each of the photos. If I stick a lamp behind the models when taking pictures hopefully the light coming from the opposite direction will fix that.
Aside from buying that new camera I hit about twenty charity shops today. I don't know what it is, but they were all pretty crap. Now they seem to be geared towards "vintage" clothes and bits of tats. Maybe it was the area, by the University, but I remember those shops as having better stock (I've picked up loads of old roleplaying games and wargames there before). What did annoy me was seeing some great die cast classic American cars sitting in a shop's window, marked as "for display only". Meh, I'll see about going to a car boot sale at the weekend before my shift in the charity shop. I swear that I'll buy something useful by the end of this week!
@Lone Cat
I think that the Bright Brotherhood were wanting to go to the moon or some other planetary body. I can't remember, but they either fail in achieving that, or come back after the events of New Vegas if you give them their good ending. Presumably they had enough supplies stored on those rockets, but they didn't come across as very prepared to me, which may be why they came back. The whole quest may be an allusion to the Enclave's plan to leave Earth and terraform another planet (which after their rockets failed they were forced to try and retake this planet instead after the War. The whole Vault experiment was to provide data for the Enclave to use for when they spent a period travelling on their space ships). The "cure" may also be referencing a Van Buren plot line where a bunch of Ghouls settled about a nuclear test site and their insane leader was trying to "cure" Ghoulification. Well rather he was creating "Born Ghouls", test tube children who were rapidly aged into adulthood and had all the positive traits of Ghouls, but none of the negative ones (apart from their creator altering them so they looked somewhat like Ghouls. One of them is described as being attractive, bar her emaciated appearance).
Camera seems to work well. More light and you'll be set.

I went to out trawling the market today. One guy with a stall filled with dinky toys refused to sell me any of them after I said I intended to paint his classic American cars (plus he was charging £8 for the chassis of an Impala with all the bits missing and no paint left on it, so I wasn't buying anyway). I did however buy a few McDonalds toys of the movie Cars (I have more, but there's no use posting duplicates in the picture). Previously I've painted one of them, Hudson I think, so these should work nicely. There's also a pair of die casts that should work too. They'll probably all just be wrecks, rather than barricades, once I manage to paint them that is.
Oh btw if anyone else is looking for them, I found a lot of them on ebay for £0.99

Wow! I've often looked at those Cars cars and wondered how they'd look all ruined up. Great work! Getting rid of the eyes really helped!

As for the cars those particular McDonalds toys don't have the eyes molded on them like one kit I've come across. The pickup truck however has an open mouth where its from grill should be, which is kind of creepy, and its body work's distorted to give the impression of facial features. The blocky proportions are ideal for fitting in with the aethestic of Fallout's chunky cruisers, if you don't want to hunt down some Marx Space Cars, or buy 1/43rd (or larger) die casts.

And it fits streamlining culture so much!
About Bright Brotherhood quest. I think it could be a mirror to a set of quest in San Francisco, where player must choose who will he/she will convey rocket fuel to? Shi town (to keep their things working, replacing fuel oil) or Hubologist (a fuel to a pilgrimmage vehicle). While in all FO2 endings. Hubologists are all doomed while its space shuttle is ascending (with different reasons of their demises depending on player's choice). The Bright Brotherhood quests has a VERY different endigns where player can either sabotage REPCONN rocket flight paths (and the readiation due to the blasts ruined Novac so soon), leave navigation system alone, or help them reaches the star (The Bright Brotherhood returned to earth to help Novac later on). I don't think it has anything to do with Van Buren ghoul community quests.
Two of the smaller shacks (they're about the size of my bedroom in real life). I have plenty of scatter terrain available, but I need more of the larger pieces. =/
Note the Chinese characters. Yup, I slap those on things when in lieu of anything relevant. Translation: "Witty Sh*t". =)
Finds from the charity shop: No. 83. I came across a Megablock's style toy aeroplane yesterday. The bottom half of it was useless, but I came away with the top of the main fuselage. That's now glued to a base and I have myself a downed airliner. However I'd rather work on the shacks, so I haven't done anything else to it. An airliner's more of a special piece, whereas I can do more with the shacks on a table.
The cars were half painted then throw in a bag. I've enough wrecks for the moment (if even most of the ones I do have were made for modern zombie games instead of retro futuristic ones).
@ Lone Cat
Yeah, it probably doesn't. There was actually supposed to be two Ghoul communities in New Vegas, the second one was cut however due to time constraints. Novac's screwed no matter what happens. The Bright Brotherhood's good ending however at least helps them with the aftermath.
Nice. Those shacks look great.
I like the fan you have hanging on one of them.

Now some questions with The Kings.
1. Which products are the materials to make a gunslinging Elvis fan? your miniature
2. Before the return of Robert House the lich king (he should be called that way, striving to earn Immortality through any means and at any expenses! one that even him has to pay!!). Did the Kings rule any portions of The Strip? Where the Great Khans exert its influence there, marginalizing the three tribes whom later joined Mr. House to become feudal lords?
3. Don't they aware that a man they're 'worshipping'? is Elvis Prestley? Is 204 years time frame long enough to erase Elvis name but not his traces?
4. Did they really care about a broken media player he mentioned about?
5. Do they speak an 'Elvis accent'? is it really exists?
6. Did the gang accepts female membership? supposed that there's local female who's eager to join them.

My Elvis Impersonator's "Bubba" by Hasslefree Miniatures. There's plenty of other companies who make similar models, and even a few who make Buddy Holly ones.
The Kings formed a while before New Vegas was "civilised" I think, when Pacer and The King were younger men. I wouldn't have thought though that they exerted the amount of power that they do after Mr House presented himself, rather they'd just have been surviving. As for the Great Khans they presumably had the other tribes under their thumb, until the tribes were able of throwing them out with Mr House's aid.
I think that the lack of any references to Elvis was a legal matter actually. Its obvious who they're referencing, but outright calling the Elvis impersonator's would've brought Obsidian into conflict with the man's estate. Mind that Elvis appears in the original games in a Velvet Elvis portrait, though the King's not knowing about the man himself is just a result of the real life issues, and I suppose it reflects on real life impersonators a little - ie impersonating an interpretation of the man's character, but not knowing much about the man himself.
Media player? Does the King talk about a jukebox? I never noticed. If they don't care about repairing something to play Elvis records, or finding a new one (not a difficult task), its just real life writing the plot (again Elvis' songs aren't in the game for legal reasons, even if the devs wanted them to be).
The King/Pacer talk in a mock Elvis accent. That's how the man sounded.
Well its a gang called "The King's", so I'm guessing that its geared towards men. They talk about women using phrases like "little pussy cat", but I don't think they're sexist. Rather they're just acting like 1950's greaser types a little, where women are supposed to swoon for them. A female courier can join them easily without anyone batting an eye, but I'd imagine that the devs didn't include any female gang members as it would've messed with their design a bit. So yes, women could probably join, and no, the King's probably aren't sexist, they're just following stereotypes.
1. And yep finishing G.I. Blues allows player to join the Kings (Through one of the four rewards that must be chosen, the reward also grants player The Kings jacket (with white crown symbol on its back) )
2. The King DID mentions about a media player in question (Jukebox maybe), which it plays Elvis song but if you say that Obsidian/Beth failed to buy copyrights to use Elvis musics in game (or Elvis Prestley asset manager chose not to sell it to anyone else!) then you're right! Not only Elvis songs (and even Name!) absent, Also an entire Rock 'n Roll genre doesn't seem to show up. Only country songs and bigband musics do. Instead of Elvis musics, certain songs from Mafia 2 (do you play this game too! Wyrmilla? meow~) shown up in New Vegas instead! (Ain't that kick in the head, by Dean Martin, and Why don't you do it right? sung by Peggy Lee) through in the case of the latter song. the dev team bought the different versions so the musics are significantly different.
Go check Mafia Wiki, look for Ain't that kick in the head entry and... you'll see Vaultboy in Mafia outfit there! No pun intended meow~
5. Is 'The King' benevolent leader?... by the standard of post-nuclear apocalypse world.
5. How does music culture progress in Fallout universe? one thread i've made discussed this issue and one Dakka member said that the music culture never progress to Disco era (nor it progresses passes Rock n' Roll, but we see a faction of Elvis fans in New Vegas!). But with Wild Wasteland perk, if player manages to obtain 'Pimp Boy' thing (likely obtainable through certain quest) and wear it instead of a standard Vault Tec Pipboy 3000. Player can hear disco music (i'm yet to acquire one! I have Wild Wasteland perk and it entertains me better!) http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Pimp-Boy_3_Billion
If you have the Wild Wasteland trait, disco music will be played upon equipping the Pimp-Boy, and the Wild Wasteland indicator will appear in the top left hand of the screen. The music can be heard again repeatedly by simply going back to Mick and swapping it back for the old Pip-Boy.
It might be possible that with electronic technology earned a focus very late (and atomic tech advanced very further). Disco music may exists as if it has been played by big band. but doesn't progress beyond this stage ...And it is possibly means that High Energy sub genre never exists in this universe, Stock Aitken Waterman musics may not exists or it will be VERY different to the real world ones? well Abba may shown up there.
So in Fallout universe. IF Disco ever exist. is this a flavor of alternate universe Disco? meow~
Part of the genius of the games are the fact that Bethesda used songs that were out of copyright or rather in the Public Domain. I'm not sure what the US law is, but it's something like if a song hasn't been republished in 50 or 60 years, it becomes public domain, and can be used without paying royalties. Elvis' estate keeps republishing his music every so many years to keep up. It's also different between the US and Europe. For instance. John Coltrane estate keeps up on his publishing rights in the US, but in Europe, his music is in Public Domain, and can be republished by various companies on Vinyl or CD, but they don't own the copyright, and can't charge royalties on it. In the US, the WRITER and PUBLISHER gets royalties every time a song is used, not necessarily the performer.

Subject: Re:Fallout: Heading East - Suburban Living
Heh, who joins the Kings? I did that the first time I played, until I realised that that was one of the only opportunities to create peace between the NCR and the Kings. =/
Mafia 2? Nah, I was probably still playing Fallout then (I don't play games much, and those I do play I wind up playing exclusively for the most part). The songs chosen for the game were either relevent to the Las Vegas setting, or country songs of the era. There's plenty of mods which add in hundreds of other great songs too mind you. I did like that most of the game's quests were named after songs. ^^
And yes, copyright laws are odd. Its 50 years then the material enters public domain. Of course the issue is like dsteingass said, the owners can update the licence they have just be republishing the material (something which I don't happens in the UK, and is famous for screwing over the comic book writer Allen Moore). Why doesn't Rock n' Roll show up? Well... With the setting its been that the Fallout world has been based on a quintessential 1950's world. Of course the games have also included the darker elements of that decade, the racist, introvertedness and general jingoism. Rock's the opposite of that homeliness. Hell maybe the US government even tried to ban it in the Fallout world as it was a symbol of youthful rebellion. Obsidian including Elvis in New Vegas caused a bit of a stir with the guys over on the wiki, as it represented the Fallout world moving forward from its original theme a tad (but I subscribe to the notion that the whole Retro Futuristic beer goggles view of the 50's that American society had become was all actually subtly enforced by a fascistic US government 1984 style so people'd remain ignorant of their real problems).
The King wants the best for Freeside and its people. He's a straight up guy really. Oh he'll fight anyone who moves onto his turf, or impeaches on the rights of his people, but he's not a bad guy. His whole issue with the NCR is that they came across as bullies to him, and just as bad as Mr House. Pacer however is more aggressive in achieving those same goals, and doesn't trust outsiders. Its easy to kill both of them to knock them out of the way, but if the player puts in the effort you can convince them that the NCR's not as bad as they think. He's just trying to do what he can for his community, even if that does mean getting into a gang war with the NCR.
You can swap out your Pip-Boy for the 3Billion if you complete all the Omerta quests then go see Mick. You have to be a little specific about how you complete those quests, as its easy to lock yourself out of some of them, or change their endings, so they 3Billion can be a bit difficult to acquire. I use a mod which replaces the 3000 with the original 2000 though, so I never bothered to swap mine out (other than just to see it a few times).
As the 3Billion's from Wild Wasteland it can't be considered canon, and so neither can the disco music. However like I said, in my view the US government was the reason why society didn't progress beyond the 50s, and were actively or subtly subverting certain elements. So who knows. I mean there could have been genres of music like disco, but because they didn't subscribe to the ideals of the 50's they weren't allowed to prosper (not necessarily because someone went about sabotaging them, but rather because the people themselves didn't care for any type of music outside of 50's period pieces). Hey lots of things could have happened in the pre-war world, but they may not have been publicised (the news papers not talking about issues keeps the people ignorant of them. Remember that the press in the Fallout world was just an extension of the propaganda machine). In the post war world what would remain of an underground subculture repressed by the government?
Edit:
Oh and hey I may as well update this on what I'm doing right now. I have the corner shop shack primed and ready to paint, and a pair of pack Brahmin in the works. Beyond that I bought two of Brother Vinni's new Robobrain models for future use (or rather to be painted up and left on a shelf for the rest of their lives). Ten days until shopping day at a wargaming show (any DCMs here prepare for me to spam my favourite thread big time that day), where hopefully there'll be lots of cool finds for me to kill my bank account with. I have way too much coursework to do right now, but who cares about that? I have minis to paint. ^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: Recall the brahmin I showed as a WIP earlier? No? Aww... *sniff* Hmph, well I didn't expect you to anyway!
...
Well anyway (you gits) I worked on it and another one a bit today. Now the pair are laden as pack brahmin for use as objectives in games (like say ambling along with a caravan or just eating some grass in a corner). The original cow models themselves are from Border Reiver miniatures (I think, they look similar to some other farm animals I have from them). As for the loads most of the bits (barrels, cloth rolls and bags) are from a Tamiya 1/48th vehicle stowage kit (which I managed to buy five of for £1 each). The large chest on the front one's from a Dead Man's Hand blister pack too.
That be a GW horse's head on the rear one too btw. Hey I sucked at sculpting one from scratch, so that seemed to closest alternative. Uh, blame it on the F.E.V. and radioactive milk its been drinking.
