Indeed. This thread title is the tabletop equivalent of "Is there any color out there prettier than blue?".

Yes, OP, there are lots of games out there that people consider "better" than warhammer using a variety of factors to make the determination. Model casting quality, sculpting, rules, artwork, mechanics, per model or overall buy-in price, and community support are all things that GW can improve upon (less so on artwork IMO compared with the rest) so you'd have to tell us which ones are most important to you as a gamer to know what to suggest. Every game has it's fans and detractors so consider any responses you get in this thread to be mostly subjective.

Very correct. But just going by the first post (rather than the thread title), I took it to mean model/sculpt wise. Which is why I linked that recent thread in my comment. Obviously, still completely objective, but once you get past that first page full of gw models, there's some tremendous less well known miniatures. Think it helped a few people to look beyond gw which, while I'm generally a big GW fan, is really a good thing. Introduced me to a couple of manufacturers I'd never come across either.

More along the lines of "Is anything better than a McDonalds Hamburger? Or what's the next best thing? I mean, I've only ever had or heard of McDonalds, so it must be the greatest in all sense, right?"

Welcome DarkHero. I'd advise you to browse the non-40k galleries on the site until you see something that strikes you. Helps find new systems and models you've never heard of!

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Thanks Warboss, I don't actually play the games just enjoy doing the models at the moment. And my favourite kind are the most intimidating to look at, ones that stand out in the cabinet. I'm open to anything though. Great suggestions from everyone in this thread thank you!!

I must admit, DarkHero, based on your original post and title I thought it was a rhetorical question. I thought you were saying GW was the top of the heap, not asking what things might be better. My apologies for the brain-crash comment.

I still maintain Mantic's Undead, Enforcer, Ogres and probably Corporation are better than their GW equivalent (Vampire Counts, Space Marines, Ogre Kingdoms and Imperial Guard). Kingdom Death makes fantastic, NSFW models, Avatars of War Chaos stuff is far superior to GW, as are all their special characters, and their Dwarven stuff is the best in the business. Definitely have to see what's out there dude, some really great stuff. I used only go for GW, and I'm so glad I've had a chance to branch out.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

You just have to find the right model.

Cheaper as well.

In fact, a blackjack and heroin addiction is probably cheaper than having a penchant for Games Workshop models!

I agree with much of that, KD models are not my cup of tea, but they look great, and i bought some AOW stuff, its fething brilliant, and their dwarven beserkers are better than GWs slayers certainly, but mantic?!

I have some enforcers, and some UD and Goblins because I went $225 on their kickstarter, I also went to their open day and picked up some sci fi stuff, so dont think I have an axe to grind, I even had a bit of craic with Ronnie and that and I wish the company every success in the world, but come on.. Enforcers better than Space Marines?

And the Ogres aren't as good as GWs, the legs are far too small and the poses are not varied enough. Same goes for their Undead and their Goblins, it just looks cheaper and more generic. It aint bad, but at best its a good stand in, I certainly wouldn't say the majority of it is better.

Which is fine, because it is far far cheaper! Im not saying I dislike their stuff, but I think your opinion is a pretty minority one if you can be adult enough to ignore the fact that GW are a loathsome corporate entity with appalling practices.

I'd pick mantic ogres and undead over GW stuff any day even ignoring the price differential.

Marines are pretty iconic and if I had in a vacuum to pick between the two I'd go with marines. On the other hand marines next to say infinity miniatures look ludicrous and cartoony and enforcers will look skinny and insubstantial next to imp guard or similar so the decision may be made for you.

In my opinion
Black scorpion, raging heros, reaper minis, dark sword minis and Corvus belli are better to name but a few at 28mm scale.
Also maxi mini and kromlech do some awesome ork models.
If you are up for different scales the hawk wargames dropzone commander models are stunning, same goes for plastic soldier company's 15mm tanks are really nice.

Mantic's Ogres are nice enough models, but they are ridiculously over-detailed for an "army" model and there are only three of them, so they get pretty boring bloody fast - and the Shooters are a right gak to paint because of the way the models are designed. GW's OK models by contrast have enough blank real estate on them so that you can really add your own touches if you're so inclined, or you can just wash and go if you're not. I prefer GW's old original metal ogres, but they're not coming back - but given the two and my hands-on experience with both, I think I prefer the GW ones at this point.

Mantic's Skeletons and Revenants (and the mounted ones) are very good, but again I think GW's ones are better as they offer more flexibility in building and posing, since I'm one of the guys who likes that sort of thing. Mantic's Zombies and Ghouls are better than GW's current ones, though. I also prefer IG and Space Marines over Mantic's Corporation and Enforcer models, though I do like the Enforcers (and have a couple of the army boxes of the Corp guys).

GW never did skeletons well in my opinion; they're big boned shall we say. Of course, the reason for this is that chunky cartoony undead are easier to assemble. Wargames Factory makes the most realistic skeletons I've ever seen, and they are a PAIN to put together.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Think the current generation of GW skellies are quite nice - certainly better than the previous 'big head' versions. Probably don't think there is a lot in it between the GW and Mantic ones, but the price difference (especially considering the numbers you are talking about for either WFB or KoW) makes the Mantic ones a no-brainer. Same too for the ghouls and zombies. If you're making an undead-themed army, for any system, you're better off saving your pennies for some lovely character pieces from GW, Gamezone, or Avatars of War or something. Then, you can buy another army (or three!) with the money you've saved.
