Yeah, if you are on a budget, they make great unit filters for Fantasy orcs and goblins it seems. I like the body of the Mantic ones more but I prefer GW's Orc heads more. Also, planning to mix and match different types of orcs as is because:
a) It gives me a (not so) good reason to paint and try different lines (possibly for cheap as well).
b) It kind of fits my fluff for the army I am planning to build up.
Also, I love the Plague Marine conversion for it! Personally, I thing you did a better job than the original models, without the need for green stuff. Almost reminds to get back to the idea of doing something with Legion.

Simple but effective (and also cheaper and as you say non-finecast) job on the Plague Marines. I may have to invest in the Chosen kit for some Iron warrior kit-bashes.
How did you find the LOTR terrain? I think for the price it is great and scales well with anything from 28 to 32mm miniatures. Very easy to paint detail too.
Good luck on the Glotkin book too, your Fantasy Chaos look like they will be a great force. As for the Blight Kings what kindof points value do they have?

@Tanakosyke, I did have to use a little green stuff, but its barely visible. I'm no good with it, so I mainly use it to fill gaps or help a small joint than I do sculpting. @T.O.T. The chosen kit is pretty awesome, but you will have to do some cutting as most of the arms have a weird angle joint that slides into the torso. You just have to cut and file to make it flat. It has some of the best chaos heads that GW makes IMHO. The fly head I like so much is from the plague bearers kit though. I got the LOTR kit off eBay for 30$. Someone had it for that price on buy it now so I just snagged it. The blightkings are 40 points a model but have better stats than ogres. They are listed as regular infantry though, as opposed to monstrous infantry, so suffer from some drawbacks from that. One of which is the huge footprint they take up on the battlefield, which can make them a little unwieldy to maneuver. @Genom. I HATE filing mold lines. I may get around to it though.

Thanks! The forsaken kit is great. Just a little pricey. The skeleton rat is from the Mantic skeleton undead kit.

I have a whole unit of bright green giant spiders but that gigantic spider is really creepy!
I'm not a big fan of batch painting either. I don't mind painting 5 to 7 goblins at a time though. I'm very behind in my painting for my campaign this month though. :(
Anyway, I really like your blog. I love that you're painting and playing a variety of things. Keep up the great work!

So, this is going to be more of a gaming updapte than a painting one, but I was using the IG models I've been showing... so that counts, right? My gaming group put on its first tournament yesterday in Lynchburg Va at Dragonfire games. We had 17 people come out which is a pretty awesome turnout considering my group consist sof about 5 people and we didn't know all these other 40k players were around! I took my IG, which is pretty much a mechanized infantry list. Here is what I brought. HQ Punisher Pask leman russ with Lascannon and 2 melta sponsons. Leman Russ Executioner with heavy plasma sponsons. Troops. 2 veteran squads with grenadiers upgrade and 3 meltas each, both in chimeras. 1 veteran squad with grenadiers upgrade with 3 plasma gun, in a chimera. 1 veteran squad with grenaiders upgrade in a taurox. These guys actually run the aegis line. My taurox sits behind it to and adds fire support. Heavy leman russ Demolisher with bolter sponsons Wyvern mortar tank Hydra flak cannon tank plus an Aegis with a quad gun. Its a little cheesy, but its a tournament dag nabbit! I did pretty well, scoring 25 out of 30 points over 3 games which got me a 2nd place finish. I took a couple pics of the games. Game 1: The Baal 111th takes on the Iron hands with legion of the damned allies. This was the closest game I played. I won 5-2 but my army suffered horrendous casualties. I was only able to pull off the win on the last turn by playing the objectives. It was a great game. My opponents legion of the danmed. Notice the Deadzone terrain? I brought it and it worked great for the tourney and everyone was asking me about it. Wish I would have gotten it painted but oh well. Your welcome Mantic! My guardsmen taking the objective in my opponents deployment zone on the bottom of the final turn. They won me the game. Their tank had been destroyed early on but they kept on going. This is a picture of the very end of the game. Pretty much every vehichle you see is wrecked, including his flier. Ironically, the Taurox is not. It never got destroye the whole day. So much for them being so awful!! Next game I played against a Chaos Marine Death Guard army led by Typhus. He had a ton of plague marines and zombies but very few heavy weapons, which made this a good matchup for me. I ended up winning 10-0 but my opponent was a great sport and I had a blast playing with him. His Hell Drake got intercepted on the way in, and it destroyed his bale flamer. Beautifully painted model. Typhus deepstriked in behind my line... then I instant killed him with my Demolisher Cannon on a lucky shot. Everything seemed to go my way this game. My last game was against vanilla marines. This opponent also brought very few heavy weapons, so the matchup was very favorable for me. I ended up winning 10-0 and this game vaulted me up to second overall. Deployment. He held some stuff in reserve and he has alot of things hiding in that building, so its hard to see. This went poorly for me... A sight that would make even the emperor proud. And thats all the pictures I took. I really liked how this list played and will probably give it another go soon. I was the first game done in all three rounds, as moving tanks around is much faster than infantry. Another perk of a mech list. Well, that's all I've got, thanks for looking and feel free to comment!

Seeing how much fun you had makes me wish I was in a place in my life where playing 40k would still be possible/fun. It still warms my heart to see other gamers chucking handfuls of dice in an attempt to bring the glory home though Tournament days sound fun though potentially busy/stressful. Closest experience I have to it was at gencon trying to get from demo game to demo game
Good to hear your guardsmen are holding up well. They're the real backbone of the empire, not the silly space marines

Glad to see the Imperial Guard (sorry Astra Militarum) doing well at a tournament. I wish I still had the drive to play competitive 40k, but it is just better for everyone that I keep my fluffy lists away from those environments.
Congrats on the results, your army looks a lot like my Imperial Guard does with tanks everywhere. I take it the Marines weren't packing drop pods full of Sternguard?

@Grim- Tournaments are a little stressful, but for me it was more stressful getting my army ready and getting the tourney going. Playing was the fun part!
@Archer- I'm more of a fluffy list guy myself. We're normally a pretty laid back group, which is why we wanted to try our hand at a tournament setting. Its only my 4th tournament ever. So its fun to break out that stuff every once in awhile, but I would much rather play for fun on a regular basis.
Thought I would throw a few more pics up from the day that didn't include my army, just to prove that I'm not totally self-centered.
The knight on the left is actually a transcendent c'tan that had "possessed" a knight. Was a pretty cool model. The guy that had this (one of my old frat brothers) won the whole tournament.
Ork stompa vs. a different Necron army
Ghazkull death star!
These were the two best painted armies at the event. I played against the Death Guard player in my 2nd game. Gorgeous minis on both sides.
So those are all the pictures I have. Thanks for indulging me. We will back to our regularly scheduled programming next week!

I really feel that the pinnacle of the hobby is two armies facing off over some excellent terrain, really helps to get in the zone.
Thanks for sharing those photos and keeps reminding me that I should take some in game photos to prove that I am not entirely self centered as well....

I struggled the most against the first list I played against, which was iron hands w/ legion of the damned allies. Their ability to deep strike in my back field, along with plenty of heavy weapons gave me a hard time. All of my Russes were gone by the third turn. I just stuck to the objectives and pulled off the win just barely. The highlight of that game was my lowly Taurox shooting down his storm raven gunship!
My other two opponents had a lot of infantry and few heavy weapons, which are good matchups for my list.

Ok, so I had enough of 40k after the tournament last week. I switched over to fantasy this weekend. Got a few models done and thought I would put them up. I got a hold of the old warhammer skirmish book, so I've been trying to get some stuff painted to play.
Empire Great swords. I really like how these guys came out.
And some archers. I don't like these guys as much. There is no armor to break up all the purple, but oh well. They're good enough to play with.
And thats about it. Worked on the blight kings a little bit too, but I will wait until I get a few more done before I post pics. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment!

The contrast between armor and cloth works really well on the Greatswords, may need to rip off the purple and steel look.
I feel the archers work as well, look very much like a royal's hunting party with all that purple....

So I haven't been spending a lot of time painting lately. I got an Xbox one recently and it has been VERY distracting. That being said, I got back into it the past few days and thought I would show my progress so far. Little bit of backstory. You wouldn't really know it by looking at this blog, but I LOVE The Blood Angels. Love em. Think they're great. That being said I already have a decent amount painted, so haven't really put much up on here. I've been working on some death company in anticipation of the new codex. Thought I would put up a few WIP shots. Will have finished shots up later this week hopefully. Thats about it. Really excited about the dreadnought. Have never painted one before! Thanks for looking and feel free to comment.
