Book 42: Garro

The Horus Heresy Book 42

Death Guard. Battle-Captain. Knight Errant. Agentia Primus. Hero. Nathaniel Garro's journey has been long and hard and now, you can read it all in one book, embellished and expanded from the original audio dramas.

READ IT BECAUSE
Garro hasn't reached the end of his journey quite yet – the Siege of Terra awaits him – but for the very first time, you can read his entire saga in a single volume, from his first mission as an agent of the Sigillite to his decision to break away and seek his own destiny.

THE STORY
From out of the shadows of the Silent War, a hero emerges. Clad all in grey, an errant warrior of the Legiones Astartes kneels before the Regent of Terra, and accepts a solemn new duty – Battle-Captain Garro, once commander of the Eisenstein, now Agentia Primus of Malcador the Sigillite. From the desolation of Isstvan to the halls of the Imperial Palace itself, he stands as a paragon of loyalty and protector of the innocent, ever ready to strike back at the traitorous allies of the Warmaster. But Garro is walking a path of his own, one that may lead him to question his own place in the Imperium... and what if he, too, should falter?

This book contains James Swallow’s complete saga of Nathaniel Garro in the Horus Heresy – the audio drama series is embellished and expanded in prose, with additional scenes to represent the author’s original vision. This all serves as prelude to the events of the novella Vow of Faith, bringing Garro closer to his inescapable destiny as the first true martyr of the Lectitio Divinitatus.

'Garro is not a collection of short stories - it's James Swallow's full novelisation of Nathaniel Garro's story arc, something we've previously only seen (in part) in the audio dramas and novella. There are new and extended scenes, whole new chapters in fact, making this just about the most definitive exploration of the founding of the Knights Errant, and everything that comes after...' - Laurie Goulding, The Horus Heresy series editor

Written by James Swallow

Audiobook running time 12 hours and 27 minutes. Narrated by Toby Longworth

This novel includes content from the audio dramas Garro: Oath of Moment, Garro: Legion of One, Garro: Sword of Truth, Garro: Shield of Lies, Burden of Duty and Garro: Ashes of Fealty, plus the novella Garro: Vow of Faith.

ABOUT THIS EDITION
The eBook edition includes integrated illustrations of characters and events from the story, and an afterword that places the story in context within the series.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Odd question, but are the dimensions of the hardback the same as the other novella's in their range, or the re-released hardbacks of the main line?

I bloody knew they'd do a Tallarn book, glad I held off getting Ironclad now.

So many anthologies. I find them annoying to read as I've often read more than half the short stories they have bundled together but don't realise till I get a few pages into said short story.

After really enjoying the GSC book and the latest Space Sharks book I thought I'd give Legacy of Caliban a go as my mate had been pestering me to read it. I'm up to Ravenwing now and its just dire, all "Belial decided to make a cup of tea so he got out a tea bag, boiled the water to 100c, then added the tea bag" over exposition. Does Gav's writing style improve at all with the later books in the series? Otherwise I'll give up now as it just isn't for me.

The anthologies are indeed deeply annoying. I try not to dwell on them too much, it's very 'old' GW style. I hope this type of thing is a legacy from darker days.

Anyway..... that black shields book is friggin exciting stuff! Can't wait for that bouncing baby.

Depending on the contents, I may pick up Tallarn. I've ordered both novellas last year, but I do still want the short stories in dead tree format, plus it's some support to the author and well, there's a Malcador on the cover. Can't say no to that.

I don't get Gav Thorpe. His Dwarf stuff for WHF was excellent, but as soon as he gets within 20 feet of a Space Marine story his writing becomes so turgid I can't get anywhere with it. I barely managed to force myself all the way through the first Raven Guard book, and I still don't know why I bothered.

EDIT: As for the anthologies, for us plebs who're not forking over ridiculous money for loads of different mini-novellas, location-specific books(seriously GW, seriously...seriously ) and special super sekrit clubhouse edition short story hardbacks the anthologies are kind of necessary, or else we'd miss out on half the Heresy content given how fond of such nonsense BL are these days.

Small digital release on Monday as well -- tie into the other Scythes stuff, one assumes.

Heloth

A Scythes of the Emperor story

The Scythes of the Emperor wage war on the vile monstrosities of the tyranid hive fleets on Miral Prime – but the creatures of the hive ship Heloth may be enough to end the devastated Chapter's hopes of survival.

READ IT BECAUSE
It's a desperate battle for survival that showcases the Scythes of the Emperor at their very best even as their chances for survival are at their very lowest.

THE STORY
As the Scythes of the Emperor prepare to defend their bastion outpost at the Giant’s Coffin, the first wave of tyranid invaders rise from the depths of the jungle beyond. With Captain Agaitas of Second Company killed in the opening firefight, his command squad withdraw from the crash site of the hive ship Heloth, pursued by lumbering Bio-Titans and seeking any suitable rallying point for their battle-brothers. What began as a counter-attack now threatens to become a slaughter, and the death world of Miral Prime may yet be the only grave marker that the Chapter will ever know.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

You know what would be really really cool? To one day see an announcement from BL that they're reprinting something where words like "limited", "collector's edition", "lavish", "bespoke", and "exclusive" were nowhere to be seen.

I mean I'm not crazy or anything, right? It wasn't that long ago that BL put out big, good-value paperback anthology-editions rather than ultramegaspecialsuperfriend-edition slipcase hardback trilogies, was it? I mean christ you could beat someone to death with the Time of Legends: Sigmar anthology and I paid £15 for that on Amazon.

Wow thats uncanny! A cool little package that one. A great triology in a nice set and £50 for 3 isn't bad at all. They might pump out the rest of the books in similar format which would make an impressive collection. I would buy this like a mother but they put up the pictures of Dante yesterday and I'm afraid that's snatched the last of this months budget. Boo hiss

Was the last one in paperback the Legacy of Caliban Omnibus that came out last October? I picked that up for just under £8 but still feel hard done by for it.

I've never read Gaunt's Ghosts so I decided to get that, they had better keep the exact same format all the way through the series.

I guess its part of the double or triple bluff of which of the inner circle or the fallen sided with Luthor or the Lion. I can't wait for that to be spoiled finally as it has become a bit like the final seasons of Lost, you just know they will pick the opposite of the most popular theory.

They're releasing a paperback Ahriman omnibus this month, aren't they? Aren't they?? I've been holding off for just that anthology, so they'd better not yank it or jack up the price or some thing... Dear god, what did they do with Ahriman omnibus???

Well, the second book is an anthology and the third is the first great book in the series, so congratulations? Unless you've got a stack of hundreds for wiping yourself with, I'd suggest you stop collecting once you have Sabbat Martyr, the last great book in the series.

Yay, we may actually get the Warmaster book, Presumely to finish of Gaunts story arc.

I sure I'll have to wait until at least xmas 2018 before it's released in mass market paperback to go with the rest of the series, but at least I know it's coming.

I've always found anthologies to be the worst books in the horus heresy series. I think the main problem is the story's are too short for you to get to grips with who the characters are and identify with them. This is lessened in some cases as known characters are featured.

As others have said I'll still pick up the paperbacks when they come out as to not miss out on the half of the story that's been released in limited edition, only available at an event written in blood on human skin gak BL are obsessed with.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.
