Has anyone informed the white Knights that Kirby was actually the armchair CEO?
So, I take it from this change that the quick reads and limited editions are no longer the focus, and they're getting back to excellent novels again?

Hasn't it always been a consensus that Kirby was an armchair CEO?

No, at the time anyone who suggested otherwise was just an armchair CEO.

well worth a read when you get a few minutes.

Yip that's confirmed what most people thought. In truth it's what goes in inside most companies today you will have a successful bunch of people who are total enthusiasts about their products and it shines through, the success attracts a bunch of nitwits who can speak management jargon believing they have skills to run any business. Its all jingoistic balls and it destroys good businesses everywhere, it kills and stifles passion in the workplace. In truth the jingo men only have a passion for themselves.

Well jingo man you might have a degree in management or geography but it looks like the revolution is here and hopefully there are plenty of spare walls in Nottingham!

Wow, an interesting read indeed. Having worked at a company that was ruined by management idiots and third party business consultants I can sympathise with the guys involved. In this kind of industry if you make good products the money will come naturally, forsaking that for a cash grab just doesn't work.

I pointed out a while ago (as have many others) that the drive for expensive ltd edt stuff was killing the black library, and it seems like we were very much right. Let's hope they get back to were they were a couple of years ago and start cranking out those new York times best sellers again.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

That's exactly why I lost interest in the Horus Heresy. I loved the paperback full novels that were main entries in the series. My last one was Deliverance Lost. But I lost track with the series when they switched to hardback mini books.

The only novellas I've gotten were Soulforge, which was great, but too short. Only got it because it featured my Legion.

And Damnation of Pythos, which likewise i got because it features my Legion (not as main characters sadly) and was also great but too short. And annoyingly, it was completely inconsequential to the overall arc of the Horus Heresy series.

Spoiler:
They make a heroic and epic last stand in which everyone dies to send a message and warning to Terra but some buerueacratic clerk files the message away in a massive archive and forgets about it. Which is brilliant in a pure Grim Dark way I guess.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Honestly the most surprising thing I got from that interview was that apparently GW, as in the studio, genuinely actually put serious planning work into the whole AoS debacle(by which I mean; using the End Times to fleece WHF fans one last time, then the months-long gap with no info, then launching the system with barely any background material and that whole "no points, just take what you like and may the fattest wallet win" attitude prior to the first General's Handbook) that most people had just ascribed to the same kind of incompetent managerial meddling as the BL issues.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Thank you. I'll have to keep an eye out for the eventual omnibus or anthology that collects them, though, because $16 each for less than 200 pages is just not for me.

About bloody time too, it's been a year!

I don't give a toss for excuses, MMPB versions of the HH novels are supposed to be 9 months after the initial HB release, although of course they should all be released simultaneously...

Indeed, so while I still want the novel, I sure as hell am not going to buy it directly, not after such a long wait.

I remember that story, it was also published in a White Dwarf when a new 'Nid codex was released years ago. Quite a depressing read that one was.

Blimey. Just goes to show that even though a lot of guesses and rumour was put out over the last few years that was wrong, the general feeling that something was wrong with Black Library (and GW) was proved right. It'd explain Laurie's apparent frustration and outbursts over the last few years. Trying to defend the good work of those passionate writers and workers while seemingly both unable to and wanting to roast the incompetent management for getting things so desperately wrong.

Wonder what tales could be told about the random rules for 40k or the AoS launch. Finally, Tony Cottrell has gone up even further in my estimation: the man in GW who actually understands what we all want!

Well, the second book is an anthology and the third is the first great book in the series, so congratulations? Unless you've got a stack of hundreds for wiping yourself with, I'd suggest you stop collecting once you have Sabbat Martyr, the last great book in the series.
Thanks for the heads up!

I'm surprised Laurie has left, anybody know where he has gone to? I shouldn't be surprised though, he was often the focal point for blame over the change to the limited/hard back/large format/small format publishing cycle as he was the main mouth piece for BL, that must have become tiresome.

I particularly liked the comment around sales are down for the limited release books, so we'll just make more of them. The same statement could be applied across the company at that time.

If the title seems familiar, it was in the anthology Let the Galaxy Burn, published in 2006....something BL has forgotten to add on their website.
