I know that no one actually plays Dreadfleet, and I suspect that I never will either. That said, the game is certainly nice to look at, and it seems a shame to let it languish in the box until I sell it at a loss or throw it out. I thought that maybe the DF ships could be the flagships in a different, better fleet-based game, and if such a game actually exists?

Ebay sellers sell the Dreadfleet ships as Man O war replacements. Not sure how well it would work - the Dreadfleet ships are way out of scale with the original Man O War minis. That being said, I believe the Man O War rules are fairly scale agnostic so you may well be able to make it work.

Oh , just throw out the 5 problematic random event cards and you have a good game.

It seems to me that Dreadfleet has the bones of a fun game, but I hate the way two fleets look on the board with all their disparate models. I like the Man 'O war/BFG style of having a fleet follow a theme.

That's what I had in mind-- each Dreadfleet ship would be the flagship of a similarly-styled fleet. Assuming such a thing exists, or course.

Which ones are those? I guess you could say I'm kind of...
...in the same boat. Automatically Appended Next Post: Have you looked at Spartan Games' Uncharted Seas? The ships are not quite the same scale, but some of them look pretty close in style.

You need to do a lot more to the Dreadfleet rules than just removing a few random event cards to make it a decent game.
There are a lot of clunky mechanics in it. The wind changing direction constantly and randomly is just one of them.

Stat them up for Uncharted Seas - good game and a number of the ships would work well with them - I use them

I don't recall off the top of my head. Basically any that says "one random ship explodes" (usually in a more roundabout way and involving lots of dice rolls). You'll know them the first time you play them. Then maybe cull some of the extreme wind changes. Everything else is pretty neat, I think.
