I've been building a folding table (though a 4x4 for other games, not 40k, but the theory is the same) based off of Poppabear's model over on the PP forums. http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?87911-Poppabear-s-Amazing-Portable-Folding-Terrain-Tables!
It was fairly cheap for materials (little over $50, not including stain or rigid foam) and has been coming along nicely. I'm a fair bit further than this picture, but essentially you make two 2'x4' sections and brace it with 1"x2" and build the sides out of 1"x3". Worth a look if you're at all handy.

I needed a table that could be moved and wasn't gonna be as annoying as the RoB boards. (for slipping down hils etc.
I like the 2x2 tiles so made 8 2x2 frames from stripwood. I then attached 4mm hardboard to the top with pins and glued and based each tile.
I have drilled holes in the same places on 4 frames so that dowels can be put in tyo stop the tiles moving once assemble. THis gives the advantage of being movable, storeable and modular for different loking battlefields and scenarios. Total cost was about £20 plus basing.

These sell out fast, they cost slightly more but I think they give a better 'flocked table' effect than the Citadel one. Very rugged and hard-wearing as well.

My old table was 2" thick insulation foam pieces that were 2'x8'. We initially just set them together on top of a table to use it, but they were so light they kept moving when bumped during games so had to mount them to a 4'x9' piece of 3/4" plywood I had. This then made for a more stable surface, but one that was not easily moved anywhere else. After my divorce I turned my ex's hobby room into my new gaming room. It has an old dining room table for use as a base, which I place a 1/4" piece of surfacing wood sized 4'x8' on which extends the dining room table surface about a foot in each direction. It is easier to deal with so the table doesn't have to always be up in the center of the room, and the extensions over the sides of the base table are not big enough to allow much warping of shape and sagging if a heavier mini is placed on them. I then cover the wood surface with one of the 3 table cloths I made special for it: Green, sand or ash grey, depending on the setting we want for the game.
The old dining table I got free years ago and used to be my mini building table, the board on top cost less than $10. So pretty cheap new table for me. I've considered picking up the parts for GW's battle board setup, but haven't done so yet as it really isn't necessary given all the terrain I already have. I also have a bunch of GW plastic terrain kits (The Imperial sector, an aquila landing pad, the strong point with 2 bastions and the aegis defense line) that I've also not been rushed to build since I have so much other terrain. Guess I should get it all built up and ready to use, though.

You guys should check out our Gaming Mats if you are interested! They're great for easy storage.
That pulley system was sweet as is the idea of hanging the boards up on the wall, nice one!
But here are our mats! We are currently very low on stock but will be resupplied in April.
We also have a lot more designs coming as well as 4x4's!

I've got the whole gambit coming this year:
Frontline MegaMat (already received!)
Secret Weapon Tablescapes (just a display board)
Games & Gears Battle Board
Warsmith Warboard
I plan to compare them and make a review post on the pros and cons of each when they all come in, so sometime this summer (Tablescapes will likely come in last).

I have to second Reecius... I'm getting a Frontlline/TableWar mat (out of the April shipment. I don't have much room at the house now, so it'll probably just throw it over some foam board on the dinning room table.
I'm dreaming dreams of this however, http://www.geekchichq.com/the-emissary-gaming-table.html
Most likely, I'll end up building my own 4x8 table with storage underneath.

Are these 6'x4'? If so, can you give a link to your site?

What is that green sheet? And where did you get it? I need something like that!!
Or go to like any fabric/craft store and ask for a 6x4 sheet of green .Looks exactly like the battle mat and only costs like 12 dollars.
\What i did is a little bit complicated.
6x4 sheet of 1/2" thick blue foam.
6x4 sheet of 1/2" thick wood
Cut both into 4 2/3 segments
But blue foam ontop of wood, glue down.
Duct tape the gorilla tape around the sides, protecting it from scratch.
Then i was able to carve down into the blue foam to make rivers, craters, and foxholes.
And becuase there are 4 parts, i can rearrange it into quite a different amount of boards.
Complicated but totally worth it.

Ill get some pics later, but mine was pretty simple.
Local pub was throwing out an old pool table so i took it off their hands to make use of it.
Pretty much just filled in the pickets with expanding foam then used milliput to cover them flat, then felted it and added in modular scenery.
About an hours work start to finish and cost me £30 total.

going to pick up this vinyl mat (you can write on it with dry erase)
and then i'm going to add a bunch of painted "ruined city" scenery, throw them on some plywood, then put that on two 6'2 tables, done.
i've always wanted to build a table from scratch though, with a built in dice tray and miniature storage.
