Jon Chu to Direct Hasbro’s Live Action ‘Jem and the Holograms’ Movie
Jon M. Chu will direct Hasbro’s live action “Jem and the Holograms” movie, based on cult 1980s animated series.
Blumhouse Prods’ Jason Blum will produce the film with Hasbro, Chu and Scooter Braun, the music talent manager who reps Justin Bieber and runs Raymond-Braun Media Group with Usher.
The trio announced their involvement in the project on Thursday via an online video on Tumblr. In the video and site, the producers ask fans for help in the creative process
Chu most recently directed “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” but has created a nice niche for himself for directing dance pics like the “Step Up” series and Bieber’s “Never Say Never.”
Ryan Landels penned the script for the “Jem and the Holograms” film, which will begin production this spring.
Project will reimagine Jem for a hyperlinked social media age, the producers say, and revolve around an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation, she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt –- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.
Episodes of the series have been airing on kids channel The Hub.

I remember loving the show despite the fact that it was about icky girls, stupid singing, and had nothing to do with laser battles, so there must have been something compelling about the characters or the writing.
I could see this having a Wayne's World feeling to it. Remember Wayne's World? Wow, I'm old.

Jem and the Holograms? Really? Has Hollywood run out of cocaine? Or have they finally overdosed? It's so hard to tell anymore.
On a related note: I would watch the FETH out of a live-action Bananaman movie!
As long as it wasn't some kind of Nolan-esque gritty re-boot.
Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)
I have no idea how you would make a gritty re-boot of a cartoon banana based superhero who needs a banana to transform, but I would watch that. I would watch any banana man movie.

I could see this working, especially if they try and market the Holograms and the Misfits as actual bands with songs to promote. Though, I wonder if the movie should have been made closer to the whole Glee phenomenon a few years ago when teens were obsessed with remakes of crappy pop songs.

What the hell did I just watch?

Will Dujour make another appearance? They had to have done something since putting out Backdoor Lover.

I don't care how. I just want it... Actually I don't want it dark and gritty, I want it to be like the cartoon just a modern remake... Tim Burton isn't allowed near. Basically keep the puns.

This makes me want to watch that Josie and the Pussycats movie they made back in the 90s. I wonder if this film will be better than it.

For a retro-nostaliga film, Josie was actually a fine movie. While rife with nods to the original source, it was also a fairly scathing criticism of media, advertisement, and pop culture.
…With cute girls in cat ears and some catchy music.
If Jem can reach the same level, they can call it a win.

I agree and it had Rosario Dawson which is just fine. Just fine.
I would be surprised if the new Jem movie had much of any social commentary considering the director also did the second GI JOE film. I am a die hard Joe fan and I had a hard time finishing that movie. It was painful, but it had some fun nods to 80's cartoon and it got all of the little kids in the audience excited and ninja kicking out of the theater. So mission accomplished! Another generation of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fans were born. If this is something Jem-fan parents can take their kids to and spread some Jem love then more power to everyone involved.

Jem and the Holograms is not one of those 80s pop culture icons I hold dear to my heart even to this day, but it appears I’m in the minority because the internet flipped its collective lid today for the cast announcement and first image/poster from John M. Chu’s live-action remake.
That’s them above, Aubrey Peeples as Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau and Shana and Hayley Kiyoko as Aja.
This story will follow Peeples’ Jerrica as an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online singing sensation and along with her sisters/bandmates:
embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.
Filming is now underway.
