Well, even allowing for STC, etc, the Imperium should have a HUGE range of architectural styles of everything, since it's a "recovered" empire that spans a huge chunk of space and so forth. Not everything needs to be skull-encrusted eagle-mounted flying buttresses with skulls on the skulls and looking like John Blanche's drunken napkin scrawls made solid.

To me at least - flat, unadorned austere, decaying Soviet-style architecture and fortifications are just as apt for the Imperium. To me, brutal and overblown Nazi architecture and well-engineered buildings covered in eagles and flags is just as apt for the Imperium (though actually very conservative compared to the actual aesthetic). Likewise, Ancient Greek and Roman-style buildings - from villas to the Parthenon and the Colosseum are just as apt for the Imperium.

And of course, then we get to Gothic architecture that actually looks like Gothic architecture - surely that's as apt for the Imperium as anything else - but including more than just spires, arches and flying buttresses. (look up some pics!) And then, why not include Romanesque architecture, and descriptions of places like Ultramar always make me thing of an ultra-modern 20th century city - skyscrapers of glass and steel, - thinking Singapore or Hong Kong or Dubai.

And that's all before we start talking about how Space Wolves live in space-viking space-longhouses and so forth.

At first, I thought to myself, "Oh, the eagle cannon isn't so bad. It's kind of cool, actually." But then Az described it as a "skull-encrusted eagle-phallus-cannon," and now... I can't unsee it! Sometimes a cannon is just a cannon?

I'm going to assume it's mildly NSFW. Though more through silliness than anything else. No foul language, though.

I just want to say that that ^ was a good post and I agree with all of it. The whole gothic hegemony thing is not good for WH40k in any way.

What? You're saying that "Moar skulls!" is not a valid design aesthetic?!

Heathen!

With that out of the way, I think that I would rather make my own "Promethium Pipeline" than pay for some.

Given the most common resource in the galaxy is Skulldanium (just look at the RoB boards - a significant % of the crust has to be Skulldanium), they don't have much choice but to cover everything in skulls.

I doubt they'll release those pipes, as I don't see what use they would have, except for getting plugged to VSG that almost no one has.

The RoB board doesn't look too shabby. The random cracks with skulls wedged in there kinda says Daemon world to me more than anything. As with everything, to each their own.

The problem is you can't swap around the terrain you put on it to make anything BUT a daemon world. Some people like that, sure - but the option for swapping it out would have been nice as well.

I bought a ROBB, did a decent-ish job on it, and now only use my Zuzzy mat because that is how I do :(

I dont know what the problem is, Cadians are bigger stronger and much tougher than your usual imperial troops, I could think of worse things to bind the buildings together with !

I'm okay with the GW 40K aesthetics.

40K terrain would look like horrible pretentious over-the-top crap on any table for any other game. But it looks perfect on a table where 40K is played.

It's just weird like that.

I would so buy a load of these pipe sets to go with my VSGs.

Except I don't have any VSGs because they made them LE.

So I save even more of my money by not buying pipes I can't use.

Well done GW, business at it's best.

You realize that the pipes don't actually have anything to do with the VSG right? Neither the VSG or the pipes get any benefit from each other. They may fit together and have an aesthetic connection, but they have separate rules. You can field VSG without pipes, and pipes without VSG.

You need both to run a Void Relay Network though. I can't imagine wasting a fortification slot on just the pipes, and I can't run just a VSG because I don't have one.

Pipes.

They made pipes.

How many man hours went into designing those pipes?

How many hours to sculpt the skulls on the pipes?

How many hours is that compared to say, updating codex: Orks?

The world may never know

Also I must say that other then the Void Shield Generator (after someone mentioned making one out of Sonic Screwdrivers I have been staring at my Old Doctor Who Sonic Screw Driver with a look of madness) I like the recent GW terrain kits. The cannons are nice and the bunkers look great. I do agree though that a "toned down" look would be equally as appealing.

Agreed. And, you know, a 'toned down' look would be possible to sell to people who played (gasp!) other games, AS WELL AS people who played Warhammer.

I get that they want to have their own 'signature look', but if you can sell your terrain and fortifications to people who play Warhammer, and people who play other games TOO, why not? Is there anyone out there who won't buy a model kit because it's not grimdark/gothic/skully enough to be EXCLUSIVELY Warhammer?

Am I unaware of some scientifically established skulls::sales ratio?

It was totally worth it to cover Kirby's butt. His quick thinking and speedy production schedule barely got him out of a sexual harassment lawsuit. Last time he ever invites an intern to clean his pipes...

Last time he came this close to a lawsuit, the ork Nob was born.

Huh? According to GW management there are NO other wargames out there... only GW makes wargames. So they can make them specific and charge for them like there is no tomorrow (about $35 per pipe will about do it...).
