Krazynadechukr, not to be fightey but it was made a point in the beginning of the thread that there are still hardback copies in the US. The UK and other areas seem to be sold out.

I imagine that when the US supply is exhausted that there will not be a new batch made and the only option will be the Apple digital product.

I really like the book enough that I actual want a physical copy. I just don't know why they priced it at $50 or if I can justify that much.

This might sound 'mean', but it is likely true.

*They knew that no one would buy 5000 copies, so they made it limited edition so that people would hurry and buy 5000 copies. Dawg!

Niche market, folks. It seems GW knows how to exploit it very well.

It's just funny. So many Posters complained about this new codex, called it a supplement, before it even came out. It finally comes out, is a stand alone army codex. Then a "scare" it might run out, a panic for some. The irony and hypocrisy is just so funny. That's why these threads are so entertaining...

That was a very insightful post that furthered the discussion. So much.

Personally, I was looking to buy it (physically) just not to have any hassle with a potential TFG who would say I can't field it unless I have the realz rulez. My local FLGS only got 2 or 3 copies who sold out same day, and the GW store told me they couldn't get it in for me, it was out of stock. And I bought a tablet specifically to carry rules pdfs and epubs.

By the Way, UB Reader is free on the playstore and reads the Astra Militarum, Inquisition and Adepta Sororitas very well. It is not UB's fault that the codex themselves are... disappointing.

I'm not seeing it. I don't see a scare, or even a significant amount of people rushing to buy it on these boards, or people who think its even a good idea to buy a book that contains very little for that much money.

But its great you can twist things to fit your view of this forum.

Its still a waste of money, and GW is still making questionable decisions as a business. That's what people are talking about.

It's the fact that they didn't label it as limited which is so confusing/disquieting. I'd have probably picked it up if it'd been clearly marked as such, but since it wasn't I didn't bother. I guess 5000ish is a bigger number than GW's general limited run of books though. So, there's that.

How about we talk about the potential dirtiest tactic, gents?

You invested your design team to create the new IG book. You want to drum up hype and maximize the profits from your investement. What better form of advertisement is something your customers would pay for?

So, let's split out a known "separate" faction in the book, sprinkle a bit of fluff and special rules, and sell this previous investment at a $50 price point along with a sampling of the new models. Limit the supply so you don't over invest in a product that you know will become readily redundant upon release of the new IG codex.

Thus, you can double dip, drum up hype, and make some of your customers buy the same thing twice. Maybe three times if they buy the White Dwarf.

The Stormtroopers codex isn't redundant to non-IG players though. Inq players can get a lot of mileage out of it (they can basically build the a C:WH Inq/Stormtroopers army from 3rd with better toys now) for example. In fact anyone who wants to field Stormtroopers without needing a bunch of Guard has a utility for it.

It's only the Guard players who don't really need the book.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also implying GW is intentionally bilking players implies there is someone there competent enough to plan something like that to bilk players. And I'm pretty sure we've established that GW's management isn't the most competent when it comes to making business decisions.

I beg to differ. Look at the major statement being thrown around: "Grab the orders and you're done."

That's essentially it. Nothing is different that cannot be found on one page to play the storm troopers out of the IG book. GW would know this, thus make a special splat book, make is limited print because you know it's very light in original material, and kick it out the door for $50 prior to the release of the parent codex.

I'm not seeing this, krazy. Maybe we have different perspectives on the issue, so please explain to me your opinion as to why everyone is unfairly complaining about this codex.

From my perspective, people called MT a supplement because it is essentially that. It is a re-branded supplement; I would have to assume GW decided branding things as "supplement" caused some of its potential customers to avoid the items because they were not seen as core items.

The Space Marine supplements are the same thing as the MT codex: they take a couple of units from an existing codex, add additional rules to these units that they don't have in their "home" codex (most often making these units Trooops), add in new or existing background, and then sell the book at the same price point as a full codex.

Mind you, these supple-codexes still contain only maybe a 5th of an actual army list. They are no different than the supplements, again just re-branded. I think people had good reason to call it a supplement. The fact that it was called a codex points to the idea that GW understands the marketability of attaching the word "codex" to these books.

As far as a "scare" goes, I'm not seeing it. Why can't people be surprised an item that was never listed as LE has disappeared from sale? Coupled with the fact that GW simply removes items that are out-of-stock without a notice rather than simply marking them as "Out-of-stock," and it's even less clear what has happened. This news from Naftka, while being news from an inconsistent source, is consistent with what people are seeing around the world: that this book has disappeared from print. GW already stated that there will not be a mobi-version of this book, so there is more evidence that GW is not invested in making MT a continued product.

Where is the irony and hypocrisy in this whole issue?

The mini-dex is priced the same way they've priced the other mini-dexes: namely too damn much. Kicking it out early doesn't even make sense as a bilking tactic against IG players since rules and points costs were released in the WD making the book only useful if you wanted to run the army by itself.

I am always baffled by GW's short-sightedness. I mean...it's the internet and everyone publishing print stuff nowadays struggles, especially those companies who e.g. mainly rely on rules. And the logical consequence to them is...making the print stuff not available to purchase after not even two weeks?

1. It's still available in the US.

2. Codex: MT and Codex: AS are different. C:MT allows for a stand alone / primary detachment of Scions with an HQ (there own order system), troops w/ opt. transport, Valkyrie fast attack and some formations. C:AM only allow the Scions to be taken as an elites choice.

I'll answer as replies to both bullet points:

1. It has been established multiple times that MT in in fact still available in the US, that is not the issue in debate.

The issue is the fact that (a) it is no longer available in a number of other countries, including the UK, (b) a rumor (on naftka, yes I know, their reliability is poor) states that GW will not be producing any more of the hardbooks, and so what ever stock the US has, once it's gone it's gone...all of this coupled with (c) GW has officially stated that they will NOT be producing a mobi-version of this book, pointing to the fact that GW is so unconcerned about MT that they can't even make the second digital format.

2. Are Force Organization changes, a couple of Orders, and a bit of new fluff *really* worth $50? Those are the only differences between MT and AM...well that and MT has considerably less content than AM.

If you say "yes," then that's fine, you are the target demographic for products like this. I personally think the price is beyond exorbitant for what essentially is a quarter of another codex (they are still the same models/units, just different spots in the force org.).

A regular codex shouldn't be $50 so saying that the mini-dex cost too much for a rulebook is a no-brainer honestly.

MT does have different lore at least (first time GW has really looked into what goes on in a Schola as far as I remember at least and they're officially horrible places to live), but no, it shouldn't be $50. NO rulebook (beyond maybe the full-sized rulebook and that's only if a cheaper "Rules Only" version exists too) should be that much.

I don't have the C:MT book (physical or digital)... is there anything different about the unit presented there compared with the platoon in the IG codex? I know it also has missions and probably warlord traits but is the entry any different? If not.. most of the utility of that book can just be had from the IG codex by simply using that entry and saying the command is the HQ and the regular guys troops.

Warlord Traits, the formations in the back of the book and the fact that their not organized into Platoons pretty much covers the crunch aspect of it.

Interestingly this is the first codex with 0 artefacts.

And yes, if you own the IG codex you basically don't need the MT book, but it's true in reverse if you're not planning on allying IG to your army too.

I think the main reason I give it any credit is just because of the "No Mobi-version of the MT codex" thing. It's at least consistent with GW not putting much additional effort into the MT release.
