AdeptiCon is being boarded! All hands on deck!

The Golden Age of Piracy is drawing to a close and the grandest pirate game in North America is beckoning all scalawags to stand before the mast or swing at the gallows. Mr. Christian and the Mutineers proudly present another continuing installment in the “Fist Full of Seamen” story: "But Pirates are coming!" The Year is 1703, and while the European powers squabble in the world's deadliest paternity suit, The War of Spanish Succession, the Caribbean colonies vie for the title of Cane-Sugar-Mama of the West Indies.

Drop Sail and weigh anchor in this colossal game of Hollywood piracy. Raid, trade, and cannonade your way around this 800 SQ. FT. board collecting gold and infamy from a dozen Island locations. Beware! Ruthless Cannibals, a terrifying ghost ship and even the legendary Kraken stand ready to consume your crew and drag you to the depths. We provide enough ships and crew to set sail on the high seas. Captains must be of legal driving age to pilot one of our ships. The under 16 crowd will be provided characters to influence the battles and adventure around the map in search of fame and fortune. All materials to play this game are provided.

Evening sessions will be run Friday and Saturday where ships get underway at 6:00 PM. Mr. Christian and the Mutineers will also be on deck throughout the weekend for demos, raiding, revelry, looting and more revelry.

All participants, besides playing in this once and a life time event game, will receive an AdeptiCon exclusive 28mm Henry Morgan, model sculpted by the talented Michael Owen.

So scurvy scallywags, make yer mark and secure a spot through pre-registration or take your chances having to walk the plank and sign up for free at the show.

AdeptiCon 2015 Sci-fi Model: Kolonel Elisabeth Dietrich

As a scion of one of Tannenberg’s ancient noble lines, Elisabeth Dietrich was born into a world of duty and honour. Tradition demanded the young Elisabeth serve in the officer cadre of the Tannenberg military, a duty she readily accepted. A year after her commissioning in Tannenberg Fusilier Regiment No 877, the empire’s northern borders were attacked by an unholy alliance of alien sub-empires, and while the invasion was cast back, it was at a terrible price. Elisabeth’s homeworld was devastated, its holdings all but destroyed and its peoples scattered across the stars.

Orphaned, Elisabeth Dietrich denounced her obsolete noble title and determined that she would serve her empire and the memory of her people by service in Tannenberg’s armies until such time as her world could be rebuilt. An inspirational leader whose authority is derived not from title but genuine ability, she is possessed of a cunning strategic mind and fearsomely skilled with the blade. She has fought across her empire’s frontiers and beyond them, against every enemy of the Tannenberg empire, ever determined to avenge the hurt done to her people and to ensure Tannenberg retains its position of power amongst the ever-warring stellar empires of the Orion-Cygnus arm.

Full Swag Bag recipients will receive the AdeptiCon 2015 Exclusive Limited Edition Kolonel Elisabeth Dietrich model from Victoria Miniatures. A limited edition resin version of this model is available for purchase in the AdeptiCon Store.

Had a question about WYSIWYG at this con, specifically 40K. Of have Grey Hunters, they are assumed to have bolt pistols and bolters, but not chainswords, thus I need chainswords. But I don't have a lot of models and like to run them as Blood Claws, so I'm thinking of having them all sport chainswords in one hand, and bolt pistols in the other, since they will all have both regardless of whether they are GH or BC. Obviously I understand I have to attach an upgrade, should a model have one, but what about the GH's bolters? Do I have to have then appear, or is a chainsword and bolt pistol sufficient? Second question: what if I run GH and BC in the same list? Are my models acceptable, as long as there is a list consistency to differentiate GH from BC?

Thank you in advance.

I am not an official representative (keep that in mind), but here is the posted WYSIWYG policy:

Units must always be represented by appropriate models. This is the single, most important rule. The 'What You See Is What You Get' (WYSIWYG) rule is in effect for all tournaments. That means all units MUST be easily identifiable as the particular choice they represent and that any and all weapons/options taken for a unit MUST be clearly represented on the model(s). Models not appropriately represented will be removed from the game.

By that, you really should have Bolters on your Grey Hunters.

However, more importantly WYSIWYG is about your opponents not being confused, ever. There are players (like Hulksmash, for example), that use completely counts-as armies, and never have any issues, because all his units are distinctly modeled/armed and he will go out of his way to explain what stuff is as many times as necessary to make sure his opponents know what is what.

The fact that you talk about using the same models between your Grey Hunter and Blood Claw units makes it sounds like it is going to be very difficult to tell one unit apart from the other. So what is the consistency going to be that is going to help your opponent tell them apart? Just a little mark on their shoulderpads or bases or something? Because there are Blood Claw models and there are Grey Hunter models, and because of that, people have an expectation of what they each look like.

So if your Blood Claws are really just Grey Hunters, then you're going to need something extremely eye-catching to make it clear to your opponent that they aren't Grey Hunters, especially if you're considering trying to not have your Grey Hunters modeled with Bolters.

In the end, lay your army out on a table, step back and pretend you are somebody playing against it. Is every unit 100% clear what it is just by looking at from a distance, or at least if your opponent gave you a heads-up once before the game? If not, if its a situation where halfway through the game your opponent might get confused and think your Grey Hunters were your Bloodclaws (or vice-versa), then it is a problem.

Thank you for the example. I have thought of putting myself in the shoes of my opponent(s). Unfortunately, I am a big supporter of proxies, probably mostly due to the fact that I don't have models or money growing on trees. That being said, I completely understand why cons like Adepticon harbor WYSIWYG rules. Cons have an end, and having clear cut rules to save time arguing is paramount. So I get it. So, I'm just trying to find out if there is a cost effective way to run a model as more than one model/unit type.

I'll ask everyone's suggestion then: If I make a Blood Claw model with a chainsword and bolt pistol, but attach a bolter when used as a grey hunter, either to their side, leg(s), or back, would that be an acceptable differentiation as to what a Grey Hunter and Blood Claw is? To my opponent: "Any troop models that have a chainsword are Blood Claws unless they have bolters, Blood Claws do not have bolters."

Also, just to clarify, safe to say based on that rule, even if a bolter is standard for a GH, and even if I have NO BC on the field, if the bolter is not physically attached to the model, it doesn't have a bolter. Does that sound correct for Adepticon?

Thank you again!

I think that weapons are really important to have right, so Grey Hunters should not have chainswords... You can also email AdeptiCon to ask, but every conversion and counts-as I've done have had the right weapons. Otherwise it doesn't meet WYSIWYG, since weapons are one of the most critical parts of that.

The problem with Grey Hunters is that they have the option for an additional CCW. So the pistol doesn't need to be modeled (because that's standard gear on every marine) but the bolter is the difference between a BC and a GH and since the chainsword is an optional upgrade unless you have paid the points for the extra CCW it shouldn't have them. That said if none of your GH has additional CCW's per your list and all of them are modeled with bolters I wouldn't care about the chainswords. Honestly it depends on the list.

In that case, you should be fine, as they'd be armed correctly! Ideally you'd have them painted slightly differently too, but if they've got bolters and the BCs don't, you're satisfying WYSIWYG.

AdeptiCon 2015: Terrain Update

It’s not all fun and games. : )

AdeptiCon is truly a year-long project. AdeptiCon’s staff and volunteers undertake significant terrain projects each year in order to maintain existing sets and introduce new ones. It is no small endeavor to plan, build, paint, and store terrain pieces for over 300 tables, but it is part of what makes AdeptiCon one of the best conventions in the world. In short, it is worth it.

AdeptiCon 2015 is no different. Terrain projects for this year’s convention span dozens of events and game systems, from Warhammer 40K and WFB tournaments, to Horus Heresy themed tables, SAGA, Bolt Action, Firestorm Armada, Dropzone Commander, Flames of War, Infinity, Malifaux and many, many more !

So time for a quick terrain update:

Ken from Badger Airbrush is a long-time partner and major sponsor of AdeptiCon and has been for many years. A true leader in the airbrush industry, Ken and Badger offer some amazing products and are known for putting together some great deal packages for AdeptiCon attendees. He is a local Chicago guy who runs a family business, employees our neighbors, and offers a product still made in the USA! Having someone just down the road from you when you have a question, need a part, or just want to grab a Gene and Jude’s hot dog is invaluable!

The last few years has seen the airbrush become one of the main tools in any hobbyist’s arsenal. And Badger has developed a range of products that make using the airbrush even easier, including their range of Minitaire paints and Stynylrez primers. Hopefully everyone got a chance to try out the sample Badger dropped in last year’s swag bag. These paint and primer lines are particularly helpful when you have several hundred square feet of terrain to paint and 64+ Deadzone buildings to prime!

Did you know those Minitaire and Stynlrez products come in quart and gallon sizes? No? Well now you do.

But enough of my rambling - what have we been working on?

By now everyone should know that we got a massive amount of Deadzone sprues this year to work on and with the help of Mel Bose at the Terrain Tutor we have a game plan for getting all of these Mantic Mantic Games Deadzone buildings on the table. It almost goes without saying that you get a major amount of terrain out of just one Battlezone box, but you get a truly astonishing amount out of 1,100+ sprues!

We also have some Chemical Tank designs from Alex Landing of Ironheart Artizans ! You have to heck these things out. Based on our “crazy, over-the-top” AdeptiCon Titancius tanks from last year, these kits are brought down to scale for the average gaming table and provide a great centerpiece to battle over.

And just wait till you see these Necropolis terrain pieces that the Brush for Hire guys have provided us. These are going to be a welcome addition to our Necron themed tables for eons to come.

Finally, Flying Tricycle, who has contributed some of the first and longest-used AdeptiCon laser terrain kits has produced some flexible Wrecked Hulk designs that we are putting to good use. Look for these to show up on a terrain table near you!

Those are some massive containers of paint and huge BLOS terrain pieces! Very cool . We've seen a similar movement locally (on a much smaller scale of course) as people get terrain suitable for Infinity. Are any of these pieces likely to be used on the Infinity tables, or will we see some of those?

Incredible work!!
