mephiston is a unit.
According to the BRB any IC may join a unit as long as it is not an FMC or vehicles. (New rules only state any unit, not any multi model unit. With MCs and vehicle restrictions.)

So Corbulo and Mephiston and a bunch of other friends (across several books and codexes) should be pretty interesting coming out of a Storm raven or Land raider now.

Toss in an Azrael for fancy ++ save.

The main idea for most phiststars involves making sure you get guys with different toughness values so you can use his T6, (or t9 if he gets and casts iron arm.). Several contenders include a biker chapter master from c:sm for the t5 spot, Celestine for the t3 spot, or an inquisitor for the same t3 spot.

My main issue with Mephiston is that he could get say...life leech, warp speed, and haemmorrage, (and smite!) because of the stupidity of "what psychic powers do I know today?"

And if you don't back him up with other psykers in your army, he may only have 4 warp dice to throw.

Let's see what can we do:

AM: Primaris Psyker (ML 2, T3)
DA: Azrael (4++, T4)
SM: IH CM (EW, T5)
SM (or formation): Chaplain Cassius (Zealot, T6) or Vaylund Cal (FW) (2+, Thunderhammer, T6)

If only Mephsiton where an IC and could join other units, but alas he is not an IC. So sad... for all of you.

Enjoy it while you can though... Could be removed in the upcoming BA codex.

Being a character has no impact on an IC's ability to join him. Just looked at the FAQ, nothing preventing this there.

I was disappointed I couldn't do this in 6th, so I'll have to try out Vector Strike's version (I wouldn't have thought of adding Cassius.)

I'd swap cassius for asmodai and get t5, fear, and instant d in melee or id take ezekiel to kill mc's, +1 ws to all units in 6" taking a chapter masters already high ws to 7 (or higher). Pretty much making prescience irrelevant

For t3 i nominate monitorum priests. So the unit gets to reroll armor saves in CC,

So it's a 700 pt unit that's easily ignored and can be out maneuvered

I think it's pretty well established that Colboru is the best T4 character, with his 2+ FNP to eat torrent fire. Without that you are going to lose to much to multilaser, shurken cannons, and posion. You just cant go anywhere else with this.

For T3, Celestine or an inquisitor with psycotrope grenades or corteza. Pretty easy there.

T5 either Draigo or Chaptermaster smashfer

Except that infiltrate wouldn't move them forwards and Cypher is a T4 model, so more expensive in terms of the balance of wounds allowable.

By my count the average toughness is 4.

2 at T6 (Meph and Cassius)
2 at T5 (Draigo and Khan)
3 at T4 (Njal, Tigurius and Corbulo)
3 at T3 (Celestine, Coteaz and War Priest)

Majority is tied between T4 and T3 so the T of the unit is 4.
