So I picked these up to go along with my wall of Martyrs. I liked these because they were cast as single pieces so I could space them and set them however I wanted.

So this weekend we are going to have a 2500 point 40k battle at the shop. I'll be using my Blood Angels Death Company Force that has yet to be field tested. In anticipation for Saturday I finished these wound counters. I bought these from FRP games during a Christmas Super Sale for next to nothing. 30% off and another 50% off that with a Christmas Code. Most excellent.

I'd always loved these models and bought them on impulse but never really had a use for them. I have 2 leader figures in my army so I figured I could use these as wound counters. Astorath the Grim has 3 wounds and Lemartes has 2 wounds. So these little guys will follow them around and as they take wounds they will be removed. The scribes are from Scribor, HA! and the cherub is a plastic bit from Games Workshop.

On my paint table is a partially assembled Chaos Giant, a 40k Nurgle Demon Prince, Ogryns, Imperial Knights...

I was able to order the dragons teeth from facebook of all places. I messaged the company because like you, I went to the website and didn't see a way to order. so I messaged them asking. I got a reply and was able to receive an invoice through Paypal. The stuff arrived quickly. A+ in my book.

Yep. My desk looks like this at the moment. Well, okay, some of those figures are now finished, but the units in the background next to the lamp are at the exact same half-painted state, since a few other side projects queue-jumped their way in front.

Good use of those Scibor figures as wound markers as well. It would make sense to have a bunch of human support staff on the ground at times.

Great idea for wound counters!! And well painted and based.

Small update. I had the fever for the flavor of silver tonight. I airbrushed a base coat on the Imperial knight skeletons this evening using Vallejo Model Metallic Air GUNGREY. It goes on really well and looks terrific...for silver.





I want to have the Bullgryns match slightly to the Imperial Knights so I also airbrushed their shields the same Gungrey.



And a side project..

I've been slowly working on a Chaos Giant for my Warriors of Chaos army. Digging through my bits I thought the LoTR Troll armor plate might work well as some extra detail. I used a bit of bluetack to hold it in place and I really like how it looks as shoulder armor. I am also adding a 3rd arm so I also tacked that into place to see how it'd look. Placing it up under the armpit seems best and it looks pretty good.




Note how the curve in the armor fits perfectly around the neck. Brilliant!

So we went to the shop today to play a 2500 point battle. My friend ended up joining us and because he can't play often I stepped aside and let him get a game in. I was the ref and official rules looker upper. The game ran long because we aren't familair with the newest edition of 40k so I didn't get a chance to play.

However...we did use my terrain! I thought I'd share a few pictures of todays battle and the Chaos of Nurgle vs Chaos of Khorne goodness.

First of course is the terrain! We decided to have the Wall of Martyrs cut through the center of the table and have this as a contested area. We then set objectives up where each side would need to take and hold sections of the trench line. How exciting!





Here newly created plague zombies slowly shamble towards the trenches driven by their unquenchable thirst.



Opposite Khorne Berserkers emerge from their transports, preparing themselves for the inevitable assault!




A Demonprince of Nurgle floats in on rotted cherub wings to contest an Objective.



A Nurgle Vindicator prepares to bombard the Khorne positions.



A Nurgle rhino pushes forward to gorge out it's rotting cargo!



Khorne Berserkers press forward to contest an Objective.




The Nurgle Demonprince looks on as enemy rhinos move towards his position.



And finally Plaguemarines emerge from their decaying transports.




It ended in a tie as both sides accumulated 2 victory points and rules were learned and dice were rolled. All in all it was a good battle.

great work on those ogryns, realy like to converting too-quite iinspireing. how have you gone about doing the zombicide minis?

Hi Jonny5...I'm the Nurgle player/painter in those pics

For the Zombicide zombies I started with a base of rakarth flesh then washed them in either ogryn flesh and or purple wash. Once that was dry I went back over with the rakarth and then highlighted with pallid wych flesh. I may have used some rotting flesh in some cases. I really don't remember.

Then I used tamyia clear red mixed with a bit of black/purple wash to add some blood and gore.

Now as Forlorn will tell you I never stick to the same technique and I never write anything down...I just kind of wing it when it comes to painting. I like to experiment. So some of the above likely changed as I went through and painted my models.

For the most part tough I based my zombies off a White Dwarf article on how to paint the Goblins from The Hobbit box set.

Great log, you're an amazing painter, I can't wait to follow the progress of this project.

So tonight I went about masking the Imperial Knights armor for the lighter color GW Kabalite Green that I'll be airbrushing on tomorrow. What a royal pain in the it was masking these pieces. I'm ready to put a stick in my eye. I used 4 different sizes of Tamiya masking tape to get the job done. In the photo it looks like 1 huge piece of tape. It isn't

So at 1230am last night/this morning I decided I couldn't wait to airbrush the 2nd color on. So here are the armor plates with the second color GW Kabalite Green added. This color really pops.

For those of you following at home I am using the color scheme from White Dwarf Issue 5 page 25 with some slight changes. For example I didn't wash the base color nuln oil, actually let me rephrase that, I did wash the initial beetle shell and the wash looked like crap. It didn't coat evenly on such a large flat surface so washing was eliminated.

What do you use to prime your models? Both black and white? Your models look amazing even with just the prime down. Also, that nurgle Land Raider, what color did you use to airbrush it?

I would also like to thank you for showing a lot of your little processes for painting / assembling a model. I'm just now leaning towards painting larger bits before assembling the whole model myself. Seems like you generally are capable of getting a much better paint job on the model and can pay more attention to detail.

Here is what I use to prime all of my figures. This is the absolute BEST primer I have ever found. It goes on flat, smooth, and takes the paint really really really well. It runs about $5.00 a can. I get mine from Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or Advanced Auto parts.



I prime in both black and white depending on what it is I am looking to do. I prime white if I intend to do a lot of washes or I want a more brilliant color. I prime black if I want darker recesses or a darker base. Bellygrub primes his models black then hits them with a light coat of white at an angle from above to help with the natural shading under his paint.

For these guns I should have kept the piece apart and did my airbrushing first. If you don't have one I highly suggest picking up an airbrush. This is the one I use exclusively for base coats.

Neat stuff

I've been busy working on the gold trim for the Imperial Knight armor plates. Here are a few progress pictures. I am going slow and taking my time to avoid any errors due to the fact I airbrushed. One downfall is if you make a mistake and go back and touch up with a brush it stands out like a sore thumb because the color isn't as smooth as the effect you get when airbrushing. So slow and steady wins the race.

Here is the story behind this figure. I simply had to have one after reading it!

I thought it might be interesting to follow the process of a commission work from inception to finished sculpt.

I was first approached by the client Theo Meier, three weeks ago. I've known Mr. Meier for nearly six years and although in the past he has bandied about ideas, this is the first sculpt he has commissioned from me. The price was quickly agreed ("a zillion dollars and I'll be good for a whole week") and we began to discuss the project.

Theo M. It's going to be called 'Slug-eat-your-face'.

Tom M. So, It's going to be a kind of slug…

Theo M. Yeah!

Tom M. And how is it different from an ordinary slug?

Theo M. It's big.

Tom M. Is that all?

Theo M. No, it has big teeth, to eat your face and is really scary.

Tom M. What kind of teeth, like a shark or an alligator…

Theo M. No, like Hambam (a hamster who, it ought to be mentioned, once bit the client)

Tom M. Any other distinguishing features?

Theo M. Yeah, he's really crazy, crazy to eat your face!

Tom M. And how does his mental state manifest itself in his appearance?

Theo M. He's got one eye bigger than the other.

Tom M. One eye bigger than the other?

Theo M. Yeah, that shows he's crazy.

The details of the design being worked out and a rough mock-up created by the client sculpting was begun a fortnight later and concluded in the course of a Saturday afternoon. Payment is pending.

I just thought I'd share this real quick. It's called Liquid Rust and it's pretty neat stuff. I picked a bottle up for myself and I will be using it on the Imperial Knight skeletons. I was at the shop today and was able to start putting Balthazar Gold accent colors onto the skeletons themselves before I set about washing them.

Thanks! I have used other completed Imperial Knight pictures as reference. The most important thing was keeping the armor organized and laying everything out as I masked them to keep it all straight. I wanted them to look similar but have differences in scheme while sharing the same color palette.

Work continues on the Imperial Knights. I completed the remaining pieces that needed to be based silver. Next will be picking out a few details with Balthazar Gold and preparing everything for washes. Now to remove the masking!

I know you may have thought of this but do you have any plans to convert ogryns to use as count as for other units? Like ogryns carrying huge guns that count as centurions or something like that. I really love everything you've done so far and its such an inspiration especially your use of washes which is something a bad painter like me can still do. I'm looking forward to seeing this finished and hopefully some battle reports when its done!

I haven't considered doing a "counts as" for anything outside of the normal Bullgryn units. My converting skills are limited to head / hand swaps so I try to stay within my skill level. Washes are the greatest gift that painters could ever hope to receive. It's magic in a bottle. When painting remember this simple rule. Paint dark to light. I know this seems silly but it's the best rule of thumb. Dark colors for the base and lighter colors for highlights. If you have any questions on washes I'd be more than happy to help.

Bellygrub and I are going to be fighting a 5000 point battle at our local HMGS convention in November. He will be bringing 5000 points in orks. I will be combining my 2500 point Blood Angels Dreadnought army with my 2500 point Ogryn army. We're bringing a realm of battle board and look to fight a graveyard battle using objectives. We have a few scenarios in mind. The space marine objective shown earlier will be one of the objectives we use in addition to the cards. We plan on doing a full battle report with photos.

Bellygrub had a few really good ideas for a scenario.

It could be a Waaaagh attacking the planet and the battle happens to be taking place on sacred grounds. The orks want to defile it "for a laugh" and the Blood Angels want to protect it. The Orks also wouldn't mind getting there hands on one of those 'umie stompas (Knight) because they quite fancy those chainswords and movable force fields. So an objective for the orks would be to bring down a knight and secure it for lootin'.

And perhaps there is a tomb that holds long sleeping technology that the Imperial Forces are trying to get to to try and stop the Waaaagh. So an objective for me would be to protect a certain tomb. Bellygrub made a neat Tomb at Gamesday make and take that is perfect for this. I'll take a photo to show it later.

Here is a look at part of the graveyard scenery that has been completed.



I also base coated the Honoured Imperium set tonight.





And I base coated the Space Marine Objective marker base.




Speaking of Objective Markers I am going to use these banners as the 6 markers needed for 7th edition. I'll number them 1 through 6 as well.



Here are the Imperial Knight weapons with the masking removed. I think they came out pretty well. I will hand paint the front section of the cannons to avoid any additional hassle with masking. I'm going to paint the head of the Thermal Cannons following the tutorial on page 21 from White Dwarf Issue 4



The chain-sword came out perfect. the little bit of silver over spray is on the trim which will be painted Balthazar Gold. So no worries!

Sorry for the absence..

So being me I got caught up in the Space Wolves release. And Mr Bellygrub had to show me the release by GW with Logan Grimnar. called "Logan Grimnar and Thunderwolves"

Now I personally hate that chariot he comes with and had zero interest in it but the army appealed to me. A Space Wolves wolf army. So 6 boxes of Thunderwolf Cavalry and 2 boxes on Fenrisian Wolves later I had my army. I am going to make all my HQ's from the base Thunderwolf box sets as well.

Here are 10 completed Fenrisian Wolves pilfered from my undead army that had been slated to become Dire Wolves. They were already primed white so I set about washing them. I also used paint thinned and made into washes using Lahmain Medium.



And I followed this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myYlcm4Kc8o (with some slight modifications) to do my bases. It's a 6 step process but well worth it in the end. It gives them the winter / cold feel I was looking for.
