I like what you've done with the shield on that Minotaur! Great idea! I really like the colors you've used as well!

Cool idea.
Since you are kinda early in your process, I'd like to point something out. A trap some armies fall into, and IMO some parts of your cool project is in danger of falling into the trap aswell.

When using WHFBmodels and wargear, your models look like WHFBmodels, with WHFB wargear. Using ogre bulls is a good idea, and I'm sure it's very tempting to use some of the clubs and primitive, brutal looking weapons that come in their box.
But IMO use caution. Because if you use too many you will loose your 40k OGRYN feel, and get a WHFB ogre kingdoms feel. The difference might be subtle, but it is certainly there, in my humble oppinion. Using the clubs for power mauls looks like it might work, and I think the idea is good.
But given your plans and theme, Id thought I'd chip in before you were too far along in the process to be able to meaningfully consider what I'm talking about.
You know best, and I'm not (hopefully) trying to tell you how to do your army. Im intrigued (and subscribed).

I see your point and I think had I continued using the more medieval weapons I would totally agree. Even now it is borderline but I wanted a unique look. Out of 37 models only 10 Bullgryn with Slab Shields have had weapon swaps and 5 head swaps out of 11 models. And the 5 man unit with Power Mauls are using the weapon that came in the Bullgryn Boxet with only 4 having headswaps. The theme behind this army was for them to have been on their own for quite sometime with the army makeup being Ogryn from different backgrounds. The other issue was I hate the Grenadier Gauntlet with a passion. It looks silly to me and there was no way I wanted to include it in my units and I felt with the shields I could do somewhat a Viking type theme to the units forming a shieldwall. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

Awesome work, already Unbound lists are inspiring great armies! Can't wait to see the lot painted.

The army as a whole is looking great. I think the amount of Fantasy parts that you've used is fine, and they still look very much the part of Ogryns. It's also really good to see unbound being used as intended for fluffy and cool armies rather than as the kind of BS uber-broken lists that there's an ever-present danger of. (and they used WD to give examples of!)

The gaming fairy visited me today bringing gifts and joy!

My Zinge Miniatures shields finally arrived after 27 days! Huzzah!

And a test fit on the Bullgryn! Magical!

And my Hull Point Markers arrived as well for my Imperial Knights!

More to come..

Yeah, those shields really look the part. How many Ogryn kits are in your force so far?

Oh, and where did you get those hull markers?

There are 13 box sets of Bullgryns (37 figures) in the army.

And here is where I got the hull point markers. They are fantastic.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40k-Imperial-Knights-Hull-Points-Marker-Set-/321411738190?pt=Games_US&hash=item4ad5a1ea4e

I purchased these custom markers. I didn't want markers showing the full hull points. I don't need to know it has all it's hull points, only if it's taken damage so I got enough for both the Imperial Knights and 5 dreadnoughts.

13 boxes! That's some dedication. What did that set you back?

Hm, I might have to order one of their marker sets down the road. Just to figure out which force(s) to get, or if I should go generic instead.

47.00 a box at 25% off due to a store say is what I was able to get them for, so it wasn't too bad.

A small update.

I airbrushed all the armor plates on the Imperial Knights tonight. Thought I'd show the base color of Incubi Darkness which will be the color of all the dark plates.

Next I'll be masking areas for the lighter colored plates in kabalite green.

More to come...

I got a teensy bit sidetracked and thought I'd share some unrelated pictures of what I've been doing. These dreads have been staring at me (half finished) as I worked on my Ogryns and I simply couldn't ignore them any longer.

So without further delay here are 4 completed Death Company Dreads for my Blood Angels Dreadnought army

The Librarian Dread

And lastly I decided to try a chipping effect that I will be using on my Imperial knights on the base of the Librarian. I think it came out really well.

And I then was a teensy bit more distracted having received my order of Secret Weapon Pigments. I decided to try and see what effect I could get on my Wall of Martyrs terrain. I didn't want to hand paint all the dead Cadian's and ammo crates and I was looking to get an old weathered look. I wanted the items at the base of the wall to look like they have been there a long long time. I feel I was able to achieve a pleasing effect.

The heavy weathering really works well on the dead cadians and mixed junk at the edges of the walls - better than painting them in a detailed way in fact.

Seeing those destroyed markers using the spare Sarcophagus sections is a great idea - one I may well have to rip off down the line.

I also got the idea making the wrecked markers from a forum and thought it was a really neat way to make use of the extra bits.

I never noticed before how the wall of martyrs detritus really is detritus from a bunch of other kits - I can see lots of IG vehicle sprue extras, the helmeted skull from a CSM icon, and more.
The heavy weathering does work well, actually gives it an even more forlorn feeling.

I finished the gun shields for the Wall of Martyrs. Here are a few pictures of the finished sections.

I'm looking to wrap up this project. I airbrushed the 16 end caps for the trench sections and gave them a drybrush. I'll be adding the pigment and calling it a day.

This is brilliant work. At its base it is a simple idea, but with sparing use of the Fantasy ogre bits it looks great, I love a good ol' kitbash.

The dreadnoughts are a nice aside too.

i have never encountered the white undercoat/ black wash and then further wash technique and I love the results. But a question, how would I paint white using the washes?

Keep it up Forlorn.

Here was my original test model when I first attempted the wash technique. The longcoat is washed, along with the hat, and the face was washed as well. Washing the flesh on the Ogryns didn't work because there is so much area to be done. On a smaller scale it works fine. I prefer a mix of washes and hard painting areas like the bolter, the belt, and the red trim on the coat. It tends to bring it all together.

If I were going to paint white, for say Templar knights as an example, I would prime white then wash using grey. The grey would run into the recess providing the shade leaving the raised areas lighter and more white. Using the Lahmian Meduim sold by Games Workshop you can create your own washes. Here is another example when I used Loren Forest (the green areas) and mixed a small amount with the Lahmian Meduim and created my own wash. It came out brilliant I think. I did the entire army in this technique. The picture below was the Loren Forest Wash applied overtop of Sepia Wash. Notice how the green settles into place exactly like the washes you buy already prepared. You can do this with any color and would work using grey over white.

And after some hard painting on the armor and weapon, the model was completed.

And the final model after blood effects were applied. The skin is 2 washes, Sepia and Loren Forest with Baal Red over areas that I wanted to look sore. That's it. You don't need to go overboard to get a great effect. The Loren Forest was the key to this look working for Nurgle.

The other option for white would be to do it the old fashioned way of hard painting it using brown as a base and working your way up which is really time consuming. I'm a lazy painter and prefer faster techniques to achieve what I am looking for without a ton of time. The Ogryns have slowed because I now have to paint all the skin, then wash, then highlight, which takes forever. Your mileage may vary, but I feel that a mix of styles between washing and painting really can achieve a great effect. Any more questions don't hesitate to ask. Hope this helps.

Great tutorial and insight into the technique there Forlorn, thank you for taking the time to do it. Was just using Loren Forest this morning, looks like I may have to invest in some Lahmian Medium and give it a go. I have always been a black undercoat painter but this looks so good I just have to give it a try.

I'm always glad to help. All these techniques I learned exactly the same way, from someone nice enough to post a tutorial on how they achieved an effect. I took what I liked and discarded the rest. Kinda like going to a salad bar.

Here is a tip when using the Medium. Only use a dab of color, say 3 parts medium to 1 part color. Mix on a tile or palette and I highly suggest using a test model. If I can do it anyone can, just take your time and add a small amount of color and apply. If the shade is too light add a dab more color until you reach the desired opaqueness. And remember you can always add another layer!

Well I am off to the gaming shop to work on ogryns. Hope to make a lot of progress this afternoon painting all the skin and getting a wash down over that. Then I'll just have to do the highlight.

Unbound armies don't follow the FOC. You can take whatever you want, at the loss of some sort of scoring bonus that a battle-forged (FOC-following) army gets.

With an unbound army you can literally take anything. If you want a 2000 point lemun Russ army you can do that. If you wanted a space marine scout army with speeders you can do that. You can do anything.
