A little overboard?
Just about right?
Completely in the wrong?

As a parent....well...I know there have been some kids in my kids' class that I've wanted to throttle....but I have some self restraint.

I find it interesting that the bus driver didn't report the incident. I have a sneaking suspicion that he believes the dad to be "in the right" on this issue and that the 11 year old bully deserved it.

A furious father escorted his 9-year-old autistic son onto a school bus late last week and proceeded to beat up an 11-year-old kid who had allegedly been bullying the boy.

The incident occurred on Friday morning in the Bay Area suburb of Richmond, Calif., reports CBS San Francisco.

Police say the assailant, Burnis Hurd got on the bus with his son. Then, his son identified the boy who had been bullying him.

“The father grabbed the 11-year old by the hair, pulled hard and raised the child out of his seat, then shoved him on the side of the bus where the window meets the wall,” Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan told CBS San Francisco.

Police say Hurd, 44, also warned that he would kill the 11-year-old boy and also threatened some other kids on the bus for good measure.

The melee was not captured on videotape and the bus driver didn’t get involved. In fact, the bus driver never even bothered to report the incident. Instead, the 11-year-old kid informed the principal at Wilson Elementary School in Richmond, where both children are enrolled in a special education program.

The alleged bully ended up with a cheek abrasion and a gashed earlobe.

Hurd ended up in jail. He has been charged with child abuse and bodily injury to a child. As on Monday, he remained in jail pending a $50,000 bond.

The 11-year-old boy’s aunt and guardian, Shanika Moses, said she wants the mad dad “prosecuted to the fullest,” according to CBS.

Hurd might have fared infinitesimally better several hours down the road in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson City, where the city council narrowly rejected an ordinance that would have made bullying by children as young as 5-years-old a crime punishable by misdemeanor charges and fines of $100. (RELATED: Nanny State Run Amok: Police Will Now Ticket, Charge 5-Year-Olds For Bullying)

The ordinance, which went down by a single vote, would have prohibited everyone over the age of five from making another person feel “terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed or molested.

Edit: to clarify--- the dad did not *beat* or *strike* or *pummel* the 11 year old bully. He picked him up and shoved him against the wall of the school bus.

Waaaay overboard.

But, then again, I can make a kid feel this small just to make a point. No need to touch him.

He's going to get the book thrown at him... for good reason.

Completely in the wrong. Throw him in jail and kill him. (Am I doing it right? Don't want to appear soft on crime.)

But yeah, totally wrong. No excuse for the father there.

No better evidence needed that what he did is wrong.

I think, while a little extreme, this does seem fair in principle. I won't defend the extent to which he went (threatening the other kids is too far) but I'm glad that someone, somewhere has stood up against this bullying. I wonder, if the kid had done this himself, would people be viewing it the same way?

In my younger days I was victim of extensive bullying myself, and I appreciate how easy it is to tire of the typical school attitude that 'bullies are the victims, they need helping, not punishing.'

No, what most of them need is the gak beaten out of them.

No. One is child abuse and the other is 2 kids fighting. Also, the one kid is autistic and only 9.

The 11 year old should have been punished, though, Just not beaten by a grown man that isn't his dad. On a bus.

At times that does sound like a good idea.

I too support this approach, though I wouldn't be stupid enough to do it in broad daylight in front of witnesses.

I just clarified the incident a little, as people seem to be assigning far more inflammatory language into the act than what apparently occurred.

To clarify the father of the 9 year old victim did not:

-- beat
-- pummel
-- strike
-- batter
-- pound
-- punch
-- hit
-- kick

the 11 year old bully.

He didn't beat the gak out of him, or kick his arse, or anything like that.

He grabbed him out of his seat on the bus and shoved him into the wall of the bus.

I'm curious, the term special education programme means that the alleged bully involved also suffered from a learning disability? Either way Dad flew off the handle.

If both kids are in a special needs school, it's unfortunate, but the dad needs to learn some restraint.

I'd have been horrified if my dad had beaten up the kids that bullied me in school, to be honest.

Thisis also misleading.

He grabbed the boy by the hair and pulled him up and shoved him into the wall hard enough to cut his cheek and earlobe.

Dad is off his rocker. Way, way, way too far.

Probably work

The problem I see with bullies is that violence is the only language they ever really seem to understand. I remember getting fethed with a couple times in school. After about the third time, a fist fight, and then detentions for each of us, that kind of stuff stopped happening. I'm not sure how you ever fix those issues without violence, but "tell an adult" wasn't ever a solution in my day, and would probably only get you twice the hassle after that. I saw others get it far worse than I did because they didn't deal with it like I did.

To just say he grabbed him is disingenuous. He lifted him by his hair.

Of course, you lose a lot of points for needing your dad to do the job, but for sufficiently levels of crazy, it proves the point.

I can see that perhaps having your autistic child coming in upset from school everyday perhaps drove the chap over the line.

Hopefully the judge isn't too harsh.

If only there were means of communicating with the school or the bully's parents other than walking onto a school bus and assaulting a child, huh?

Wouldn't proper protocol call for the dad to beat up the dad of the bully?

You know what, you're right. Nobody is perfect.

But frankly, that is not an excuse for attacking children. There's 'perfect' and then there's 'not assaulting children'.
