Think microwaveable cake batter

Looking for a way to binge on baked goods without the wait-time of actually baking?

Two Harvard students are working to patent Spray Cake, which releases cake batter out of a dispenser that works like a whipped-cream can. The accelerant in the can releases air bubbles inside the batter, eliminating the need for baking soda and baking powder so the confection is ready to eat almost instantly. It takes 30 seconds to bake a cupcake in the microwave, and only one minute to bake a full cake.

John McCallum, a junior and the brains behind Spray Cake, came up with the idea as a final project for his freshman year Science and Cooking class. It was his soon-to-be girlfriend, Brooke Nowakowski, who saw its potential: “He was just like, ‘Cool. Lab project,’ ” she told The Boston Globe. “But I thought it could go somewhere.” And she argues it’s good for weight control because, “You can simply pull it off the shelf, make one cupcake, then put it back in the fridge” — which won’t take nearly as long as it took Kristen Wiig’s character in Bridesmaids to make a single cupcake for herself:

When adding water is just too much work...

When not spraying cake directly in your mouth is too much work.

"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'. New York City

I don't notice too much of a weight problem here in NYC. Maybe one out of 15 people here are overweight. 1 out of 100 are obese. Interestingly enough, its rare to see an obese male in NYC, most obese people I see tend to be female, and a large portion are black women. The next largest portion I would say are latinas. This makes me think culture and social standing have something to do with obesity in America. Especially the food aspect of things.
Another interesting thing I want to point out, why aren't there any rich people out there who are fat? Do you think its financial success or happiness that helps people to lead healthy lives? Or do you think they can just afford to be skinny?

I will forever remain humble because I know I could have less.
I will always be grateful because I remember I've had less.

I think many rich people can more easily afford healthy food. I also know many who have personal trainers every day of the week. Generally speaking, poorer people will have to eat more fast food and junk food because it is cheaper than going to a grocery.

Over here it is way more expensive to eat fast food* than buy groceries. If someone here tells me it's cheaper to buy fast food my brain explodes from stupidity retention.

Is it really cheaper to eat fast food in the US that doesn't make you hungry before groceries would?

* I'm thinking of all fast food - from Pizza hut to twinkies to chinese.

Also putting flour ,egg, sugar and milk in a microwave and calling it a cake should be illegal. that gak is rubber not cake.

I now want to make cupcakes when I go home with chocolate butter icing, but have to cook home made spam and cheese rolls for breakfast.

It's not just the money, it's the time. If you're poor and struggling to get enough food to eat you're probably also busy (working multiple jobs, bus travel between jobs, taking care of kids, etc), so you can't afford to spend a lot of time finding the perfect cheap grocery meal and cooking it. So the real comparison becomes fast food vs. groceries you can throw in the microwave, and fast food tends to win.

And also remember that grocery store access can be a problem in some poorer areas. So now you're comparing fast food to whatever you can get at the gas station or similar store.

Probably work

The trick to fast food that's actually cheaper than real food is to only eat off the dollar menu. Also, no drink, just a sammich. That was how I did it when I was working two (near) minimum wage jobs before I got my big boy job. On the weekends and evenings I ate real food, which was always pretty cheap too, but I don't think I could make a full meal that was cheaper than $1-2 a serving and still reasonably filling.

Of course, I think the dollar menu went away at most places.

It's not so much actual 'fast food' eaten out, it's the junk food eaten at home that is the significant factor (that is, foods high in fat, salt, and 'empty calories').

E.g. you're a minimum wager with 2 mouths to feed, do you go for one meal's worth of healthy stir fry at $2 per portion, or do you go for 10 packets of high-salt, high-calorie, low in pretty much everything else your body needs, instant noodles at 20cents a portion?

It sounds wierd, but the closer you are the breadline the more likely you are to be obese, not from too many burger kings, but because the econo-burgers your eating at home are just so damn unhealthy, and they are unhealthy because they are cheap.

riiiiiiight,

because driving to, and waiting in line at the mc donalds or other fast food join 3 times a day takes up more time then driving to the market once every week or so...

just like opening a bag of carrots takes more time and effort then opening a bag of chips.

it takes less time, and less money to eat healthy, the ONLY thing it takes more of is willpower and planning.

even with people with perfect access to markets and good food, junk food is still far out bought over other foods, its not an access problem its a problem of will.

its the simple, hard, truth, that people are eating junk food because they want to, not because its some sob story about how other people/sociaty forces them too despite them really not wanting to.

even at places like MC d's where you can either get fries or a salad for the same price as a side, the fries are the overwhelmingly made choice.

people have all the options, education, available to them, they simply still make the CHOICE to consume junk food in unreasonable quantities.

Also assumes people have living conditions which can support buying a load of cheaper ingredients, storing them, preparing them and cooking them.

Lots of low-income people have a bedroom or efficiency which makes that 'cheaper to buy groceries' literally impossible to prepare.

The "It is cheaper to buy groceries than to eat fast food" is often said from someone's fully equipped kitchen with a fullsized fridge, a 5 burner stove with double oven and a full set of cooking utensils, pots, pans, and other equipment like a blender and such.

It is very hard to cook inexpensive food when you have a mini-fridge and a hotplate with no place to prepare food and no tools to do food prep with.

as someone who grew up in poverty,

your options as a poor person are much better spending 1$ at a market then at any fast food place...

sure I could drive/walk/bike to mc d;s or where ever and get a dallar menu item that was horrible food value,

or I could eat a tin of beans on some toast with a peice of fruit and a glass of water for the same price, at my own home with less prep time then it took to get to mc d's.

poverty in NO WAY forced me to eat unhealthy, in fact, my limited funds basically forced me NOT to eat out and NOT to choose junk food as I simply could not afford it.

FWIW I lived in the inner city too, closets market was 3km away

The thing is, a lot of people don't know that. They automatically equate the idea of salad with being healthy, no matter how drowned in ranch it is.

Personally, if I'm doing a salad, just tossing it with a bit of apple cider vinegar is fine for me.

Yeah, ranch is pure fat. Vinegar and Oil based dressings tend to be healthier.
