Subject: LoER Terrain Contest: Round 11: On The Road
Good to see a selection of nice plans, the start of work and the sharing of ideas.
I'm sure I was going to say something else, but it's gone now... might come back later...
Anyway, keep it up.

Oooh this sounds interesting, I think I'm gonna have to give it a go, probably flames of war because that's what I have lying around ATM I'm thinking a few soldiers and a tank battling it out to secure a road for strategic reasons, here's my first plan.
I am also thinking bridge.
What I have in mind right now is two large mushrooms linked by some kind of bridge.
The bridge will be over a road/path lined with trees and various sized mushrooms.
I have a troll model that hasn't found its way into play yet, so he may live under the bridge.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

All entries cheerfully accepted. We also expect contestants to offer tips to each other...well, I do. Sadly, as the guy running this, I can only cheerlead, not coach :( So you'll make something decent to be certain.

FoW will be fine. Having a variety of game systems represented makes for a more interesting contest, IMHO. It's a big tent here in P&M, room for all

I've wanted to give an iron road a try for some time now, so I think I'll go down that path for this one.
Now to figure out how to do it... and doing it...
Sounds intriguing. Iron road as in railroad (Ferrocarril or EisenBahn or Chemin de fer)? Interesting that German, Spanish, and French say it that way, whereas we say railroad.
And two pages already. Cool. OP updated with new builders.

Thanks Red Harvest, I've been watching the last couple of comps with avid interest...I'm only just getting back into the hobby after a 12 year break and am super keen to embrace all the changes that have happened since I stopped. Namely the internet! its so good to be able to share info/interests with people all over the world now.
Anyway my idea is to make a section of intersecting ruined freeway with the bottom road at ground level and a crumbling overpass falling down around and over it. With a couple of strategically placed 'concrete slabs' it should remain a piece of playable terrain. I'm thinking I'll try my hand at a bit of limited scratch building to put in some wrecked imperial vehicles and maybe some scavenging muties or something and a traveler with a dog encountering them ala fallout.
I have some plasticard in the mail...I've never used it before but am super keen to give it a go!
Cheers

that was quite a nice collection of slideshows...very inspiring...
my initial plan was to make a lifting bridge... steampunk style... maybe even working...
I can´t figure out certain ways to get the bridge moving for starters... so I am now leaning more towards the stone bridge design... I want to have a troll underneath... a steampunk interpretation of the term...hmm...
have done already a lot of research... and I still have a bit of summer holidays before school starts again (me working as an assistant teacher kind of way...)... so I better use what free time I have
I was thinking of the same bridge idea , I was going to use the Thomas the tank engine bridge I picked up last year to figure out the gearing to it, but I think I have a better idea now .
Okay, I'll let you in on the plan and red harvest can decide if it's an acceptable "road"...Deathstar trench run board

So was playing around with some plasticard off-cuts last night and had a very interesting idea for a chaos themed dio that I think is pretty original.....need to think on it a bit though as I'm not sure I could do it justice in time.......so basically just a tease post
Okay, here is the overall plan. Sorry my perspective drawing is a bit rusty and the ruler here at work is little better than using a doughnut for making straight lines.
These are the minimal elements I plan to build with this piece, with only one part I am still debating and would like some feed back on.
Guard tower on the roof of the shack.......Do it or scrap the idea. Let me show you how it will look first without and then with:
And here is the preliminary idea for making the wall. I got another sketch that I am also fooling around with trying to see if I can improve upon it.
What do you think?
There are 10 types of people in this world; those that know binary and those that dont.

Guard tower works for me...of course, during construction you don't need to fix it in place which gives you either option.....
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok.....concept for Road To Nowhere dio.....
Rough idea, with randomly chosen placeholder figures in there....
Concerns are making the moebius strip sturdy enough, and the fact that I know how long it'll take me to convert up the figures so that they're posed to interact with each other properly.....Plus the actual presentation of it......
However, I do like the concept and it is completely different from my orky terrain which in some ways I can consider a 'fall-back easy option'......

That's between 6 and 8 figures that'll need finishing....and let's just have a look back at my blogs to see how long that normally takes.........oooooops
I'm liking all the concepts and ideas we're seeing here. Not a lot I can add to anything in particular at this stage.
I'm interested to see how the Möbius strip progresses and how you will attach/support it (maybe in some M, C. Escher like surroundings). As for the interaction of the people, it depends on how you see the dimensionality of the space; If it's a 3D space, then they will all see each other and will be shooting in all directions. If however, you think of the strip in a 4D space, then the 3D people on the strip don't see each other unless they are near on the strip, this would simplify the interactions of the models. This could lead to a sort of ongoing, never-ending chase thing...
Both 3D and 4D themes are possible and have their advantages and disadvantages.
All these overpass ideas have just given me a good (and possibly crazy) idea for a whole table layout: Some kind of spaghetti junction tribute. Spanning the whole table, various sections damaged. That's one way to make the game more 3 dimensional!
I'll have to write that down for when I have the space to give it a go...
For those of you unfamiliar with the spaghetti junction:
Spoiler:
Anyway, While I haven't built any roads myself, I can add a little idea for making tarmac...
You can use the carbon that comes out of Britta water filters.
A single sprinkling will give you a nice gravel surface, but if you cram on as many as will fit and squash them all together, then sand the top surface, you get a nice tarmac look.
Although the largest thing I've covered is only a biker base...
Spoiler:
...a larger area would be possible (if you had enough carbon, and sandpaper).
Cork, though, would probably be just as good, and much easier. But it's a thought.

Good to see I'm not the only one who uses those things, Brita filters, for the contents... after filtering. It does make a nice surface. I'll find a use for that. Of course.
You could also look up Springfield Mixing Bowl for convoluted roadways.

Welcome aboard. Can't say where this journey will go, but it sure looks fun eh? There's a place for everyone. But they have to build it themselves

You need to decide that Theo. It would be bad form for me to pre-judge an entry. However, if you seek clarification of the theme, that I can do. I'll just quote myself from the OP,
Red Harvest wrote: probably not in the air or through space, although that would be interesting to see, and if you can pull it off, then by all means go for it.
Looks like 'space roads' are specifically included in the theme description, just unexpected. Helpful?
Or not. That rebel rabble destroyed Humanity's last best hope. Now what will Humanity do in a galaxy teeming with Xeno-scum? (yeah, looking at you Jar-Jar Binks)
Monkeytroll, what body of water is that in the background?
Plans are looking very good indeed. Lots of creativity. A very good thing. Nice work folks.
Editto mention OP updated with new builders

Ehh Jar-jar was back in the day, maybe the empire went and wiped them out after the fact but before the original series?
Thrawn almost clutched a win but couldn't hold it together.
Besides... if you can blow up a planet... and your target is a small moon orbiting a gas giant that's in your LoF... couldn't you just blow up the gas giant? Maybe it was the bureaucracy, and they hadn't filled out the proper form to blow up a planet, just a moon, but meh incompetence on that scale says they had it comin. Not to mention the hole's existence in the first place

hey MT... I think you should have inbedded a metal sheet between the two sheets of PC... then with magnetic bases you could keep that "road" workable...
Well, here's a god damn awful picture (phone) of my ideas, I've decided to go for a bridge over a small river, there are some minis for scale. The final pictures will be done with an actual camera don't worry
Edit: forgot to say that everyone else's ideas are looking awesome!

Good starts NoodleArt, Littletower.

that shot of course is still so WIP that you probably cant tell heads from tail... me too... will be developed in the fullness of time... plan is to make it moveable tho...cross your fingers!
as for my fellow competitors...
wow....
Barnzie4Moop looks really amazing... with lots of glass?... I totally wanna see this done!!! so sci fi!

at MT...the holes make it look very spacy already!
and LT... well...said enough praise on your thread already
