My mother gave me a bottle so I feel obliged to give it a go. It is supposed to be a pretty good example out of the Daily Telegraph wine club collection.
I am not finding it actively disgusting so far but it seems "neither fish nor fowl" so to speak. It doesn't have the depth and body of a good red, nor the lightness and freshness of a decent white.
Not an experience that would make me rush out to repeat it.

I find rose to be the larger of wines. Drinkable and has its place. That place is not in polite company. It's fine if you just want something inoffensive to sit and drink on a sunny day or at a BBQ a chilled rose is an easy drink. Just don't drink it in public unless you are under 25 and female.

I think I've had it once or twice, and can't say my experience differed from yours too much. I prefer reds, not watered-down pinks.

I haven't had one I like. I lean towards a cab sav from South America or Australia, or a number of blends we've recently discovered if I just want something to sip on.

I'm partial to the South American Malbecs atm, although my weapon of choice these summer months is a 50/50 pint of G&T, preferably Hendricks or the Bombay Saph.
Rose wine is very popular with young teen and 20something hip ladies, I think because it has, as you said, none of the strong defining features of either whites or reds, so fulfills the bland sweetness appealing to a less matured palate.

My wife does occasionally. It's a good, light 'starter' wine for those who haven't really been a wine drinker before.

At my Uni, it's the go-to drink for the girls, in the same way that guys go for the cheap lagers.
Especially for pre-drinking, because it can be got cheap, and, due to not tasting of much, it's easy to drink in the requisite vast quantities.
The unisex option is cheap vodka and supermarket cola, which tastes as bad as it sounds.
Outside of the Uni drinking circuit, personally I'm more partial to a nice red wine, and I can't say as I'd ever pick Rose if there was another option.

I don't mind a bit of rose. I mostly drink 'Good' (read: 'premium') lager, though.

Never messed around with rose - I was never really sure what it was and don't generally buy wine unless I know I will like it.
It's not my first, second, third or fourth choice when I feel like getting sauced, and when I am in a wine mood, it's generally because I am poor and that five liter box for 18 bucks is looking pretty good. And that's always somethings like a Riesling because have you ever tried to drink five liters of red wine? Gums up the works but hard.

That's funny. I've just discovered Malbecs in the past year and I've become quote fond of them myself. Any particular ones you'd recommend? As far as rose goes, I've had it. I don't mind it. It's not my favorite, but I would drink it again. There's a winery in Ohio's Amish country, called Breitenbach that I quite like. They have a rose called First Crush that I found to be pretty tasty. They've got a lot of other good stuff too.

Rose is a wine that is made with the skins left on a little bit longer that in white wine, but much less than in red, which gives it a little more body and a pinkish color. White wines tend to be lighter and sweeter, red wines tend to be heavier and - in my opinion - a bit sour. Rose wine tends to be right in the middle.
As others have said, I do not care for it because it has the benefits of neither and the disadvantages of both. I'm not much of a wine drinker but when I do I like a fruity, sweet dessert wine after dinner.
Truthfully at this point in my drinking career, I'm quite fond of Angry Orchard and other hard ciders, and Corona or Blue Moon if not available.

Rose is fine chilled for an bbq in the arvo or a picnic.
A nice Rioja or a Chillean Syrah is pretty hard to beat imo.

Im not really a wine drinker *shrug*, the last time I drank wine was also the first... there was a large bottle of cheap red that tasted like vinegar nearby and I chugged it as fast as I could so I wouldn't remember the nightmare of that night the next morning... it mostly worked, but since then I vomit just going near a red (unless its in sangria, I make a pretty fabulous Sangria, and yes my use of the term fabulous was very intentional )

There are good Rose wines, and a few that are fairly close to great. The trick is to find a Rose that was made as a Rose from planting to bottling - grapes . Unfortunately most Roses are just red white blends, and rarely using good drops of either.
And if we're all listing our preferences, I'm from Western Australia so I'm obligated both by law and reality to state that Shiraz is the greatest drop.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I'm a fan of Penfolds. The Cheaper ones are OK, but the reserves are excellent. I had a 2003 Cab Sav reserve (one of the vins) that we had in celebration of moving into our new home last year. It didn't suck.

My wife and I used Korbel Sweet Rose for the toast at our wedding reception. It was one of the first wines that I actually enjoyed.
That was years ago and I don't think I've had a rose since then. We live in a wine-producing region in Virginia and none of the wineries we frequent offer a rose.

What MGS said. I like the full spectrum of reds and whites, but roses, blushes and pinks just don't do anything for me.

Honestly, I only like wines paired with foods and a rose can work with certain appetizers and entrees. Cheeses and Asian rice dishes, in particular, work well.
But it is definitely something you don't want to drink independently.
