Nevelon,

Thank you very much for posting that picture! I have those miniatures still but mine are mostly unpainted or poorly painted. I'm pretty sure they were made in the early 80s because I know I bought those box sets when I was in high school at that time.

I think I'll pull mine out and paint it up.

I’ve got more, both poorly painted and raw lead. These were just handy for a photo shoot. I have a number of the old boxes myself, plus a half filled shoebox of minis from that era that I got 3rd hand somewhere along the line. It would be interesting to see how some of these old guys would do with a modern, more skilled, paintjob. While I might not be all that and a bag of chips, my painting these days is just a little better then it was back in the day. That, or I can afford better brushes and more then the starter set of 8 paints.

We're back like a large metal guy entering a police station.

This week we take a peek back at an old White Dwarf I rooted out (dodges Heroquest again until he can find it).

So don those rose tints and lets begin.....

The cover of the WD, issued in July 1994, wow 20 years on. Its a reprint of the 2nd ed Ork Codex cover by the way.

Issue number and code

This was the inside cover, Orks in Epic and Eldar battling BAs in 40k. Inspirational.

Heres the contents pages. 54 pages which isnt a huge amount to be honest but a good variety of games covered and the Blood Bowl tactics and Warhammer artilliary were good.

There was a page displaying some Eldar units which had obviously just gone on sale

And them in the flesh.....

Comparison between old and new WG

This was the back cover image, a suitably atmospheric Vampire arrangement

The 2nd ed Ork Dreadnought also got a one page advert to himself

And finally some 1994 prices
5 WG still expensive enough, circa 20 sterling. But over here in Ireland we had a nasty exchange rate then so who knows how much!

Historical markings time! From left to right, We have a veteran sergeant, a regular sarge, a normal veteran, and a normal trooper. The hazard stripe look was the hallmark of vets back in the day, while the parallel lines in a secondary color set the sarge apart from the squad.

Thanks for showing off your old minis everyone. In a lot of cases I actually prefer them to the newer ones, especially the Orks and Chaos ones. They just seemed to fit what they were back in the day.

Wow, great find Reds8n. As it says, sure there aren't too many of those around still in their boxes, let alone shrink-wrapped!

I'm tempted by those D&D adventurers that he also has for sale, just because if I ever use them I can then nonchalantly say "yeah, these were painted by Robin Dews"

Out of interest, where did Robin head off to after GW? Was he one of the lot who went to Warlord Games with Rick Priestly and Paul Sawyer?

No.

After WD he was the design studio manager for a few years.

Then he was involved in the (aborted) Warhammer Online with Climax studios.

The he was the Warhammer World general manager and quite key in a lot of areas there, especially Bugmans and the like.

The he was head of GW Spain for a few years, before heading back.

Then.... think we're talking a round 2011/12 he did another project or two for Gw before leaving, now he's a managament coach/trainer kind of thing -- outside expert.

Did a MBA -- business something or other ..? -- sometime as well.

Met him once or twice over the years, always very cool

Original LRs and paint the theme for the week?

As I’ve already posted my half melted LR in this thread, I’ll go for something related:

The transfer sheet that came in the box (do those things go stale?) All in blue. I assume the idea was you put them on your mini and then painted over them. I never did.

And some paint pots from through the ages:

I might be missing a style somewhere along the line. The brazen brass in the middle holds the title of worst pot ever. Once you cracked those open, they dried out in no time flat. The screwtop never set right.

I had all the combat cards, there were six sets in the original run. They did some more around 3rd edition 40k.

People seem to slate them as a poor product, but I loved getting to see all the photos of the different figures.

Gotta agree with you on that, thought the glistening green ones were when i first started and was painting right outta the pot so they always ended up with a ring of dried paint messing up the seal...

A day late so my apologies but I missed last week due to RL going ons.

So from under my bed this week come these misfits.....

The old Captain Badrukk model, slightly converted to carry an Eldar scatter laser I think it was
My friend did the paint job circa 1995 I think, easily his neastist job!

I must strip him down and rework him, its a cool model, cheeky little face on him.

I was so excited to find this box too, it would add even more Space Hulk Stealers to my Nids.

Unfortunately upon opening it, I was greeted by only these.....some old sprue and BA transfers. Never collect BAs so Im at a loss

An absolute gem emerged next from the dusty darkness. Goofy or what?

Look at the price on this guy. Back then we used Irish Punts as currency so it would have converted across to about 6 quid I think.

Look at the dust layer on this guy, the old metal Azmodai model

And we end with some classic Ork sculpts. Some of them arent actually too bad imo, I might strip them down and add them to Gazzys horde.

Until next week oldtimers.....

It’s almost the weekend, so time to dust off the fossils and grab the camera. With the fuss about some of the BAs being on 32mm bases, I thought I’d show you that it could be worse: You can always tell a witch by her hex base =P

Not sure how to rank her up...
