Do half the armies in the game have access to poison, dirt cheap troops, excellent FMCs and the ability to horde the hell out of the opposition?
Perhaps not in that combination.. but a lot have access to better MCs, better shooting, better CC, better troops. better psychics. etc :p There is very little that could make Nids " op"

My interpretation:
2005 - 2010: Robin Cruddace gets consistently beaten by Tyranids while playing IG.
2010: Cruddace says "Let me do the Tyranids Codex, it's been a while since I did a book"
2011: Cruddace realizes that while nerfing Tyranids, he has made a monumental error in making the Tervigon super good, as well as the Trygon.
2013: Cruddace says "Let me do the Tyranids Codex, but let's put the GW design team so that I don't get all the backlash"
2014 Jan: Cruddace is finally happy with the book being unplayable and releases his name as the author of the Codex.
2014 Feb: Cruddace realizes that he has neglected to oversee how good Flyrants are.
2014 Mar: Cruddace realizes that someone has gone behind his back and made the best Dataslates for Tyranids and plots to make sure 7th edition nerfs them.
2014 May: Cruddace is happy with 7th edition nerfing Tyranids even more.
2014 May (a day after the release of 7th): Cruddace realises that the standard Flyrant build is now even better than before and is seething with rage.
Present: Cruddace is wracking his brain to see how he can stop Tyranids once and for all when playing his beloved guard.

You can put together a very effective Tyranid army.
That does not mean the increasing variety of redundant units is to be celebrated.
Haruspex
Toxicrine
Maleceptor
Pyrovore
Exocrine
Tyrannofex
It would not take a lot of effort to tweak these and make them worth consideration in more lists.

This isn't the place for list discussion so I'll bow out, but that list of redundant units is wrong. all kinds of wrong. I have the Haruspex and the Tyrannofex in my armory and they get use, my exocrine gets used more often than not as well.
Back on topic....
Has any extra supplements been leaked? It would make sense for GW to release something along side these new beasts

The rules are included in the White Dwarf (and probably in the box), so I very much doubt there will be anything coming besides these models for 'Nids.

I do like this 'rules are in the box' idea, but I can see lots of moaning from the players having to face them. It's a shame they don't do the FW approach and release the PDF on the site.
But I guess it gives the WD Weekly more sales.

Regarding how strong/ weak these new models are, at the end of it Nids are still left with more boring/ bland rulesets time and time again.
Doom of Malantai and the Gargoyle Mortrex were both fun as an example. Ymgarls too.
Why not something similar. Crazy big spore mines that move at random. Fex like model that gets stronger the more it moves until it hits something. Spore cloud template, is torrent, blinds, but doesn't wound. Bio mass melting, collection, and respawns giving Pyrovores and Rippers some fun rules.
It's not hard, and it's not much to ask.

That would be so awesome. Man... they'd be scary and intimidating surging across the field again!
Unfortunately, I don't see it happening... and if the ruleset shifts to emphasize combat again in the future, it'd be too powerful. So likely another big nid that won't see much table time...

Quite so. I could tweak these units slightly and make them all viable in really short order.
Haruspex: A couple more attacks and inbuilt Regenerate (keeps it slow and able to be brought down, but if it gets in close it will chomp a unit betwene its own attacks and its wound-replenishment/acid blood combination)
Toxicrene: I actually think this one might be alright as it is, as a slightly watered-down Dimachaeron that is a bit easier to hide (plus the toxic cloud is an interesting attack thanks to Ignores Cover)
Maleceptor: Proper Warp Field, D3 glancing hits instead of one per cast, affects D3 targets within range per successful cast, may be cast three times per turn
Pyrovore: Torrent, FNP, Regenerate, a tweak on the Fiery Explosion rule to occur whenever it dies, making it into a slow ranged heavy flamer/suicide bomber unit (think the Baneling from Starcraft), heck you could even patch the Acid Maw to be a really, really lethal Melta-bomb style attack to represent the crushing jaws and digestic acids eating through anything.
Exocrine: What's wrong with the Exocrine? Mine never fails to have an impact, unless the opponent kills it in the first turn... but few units can't have that said about them really.
Tyrannofex: Needs a little more punch. Acid Spray is fine, Rupture Cannon (based on the fluff) is easily fixed by causing an additional automatic S10/Ap1 hit if both normal shots land, Fleshborer Hive is differentiated from the Acid Spray (anti-light infantry) through adding Rending. Symbiotic Targeting (from the Exocrine) also really boosts this unit.

What is the use for "ignore cover" if you have no AP? And with a ridiculous range...
What is the use for a 3x2WC-focused witchfire which will miss half of the time and with which you must change the target?
I feel that tyranids are considered by rulewriters as a space-marine-development-enemy: "booh, what a big, threatening and tough beasty-bear! Look, we are in a holy sh... against that huge monstruosity!" and a few graviton/missiles/plasma/autocannon shots after, there is nothing more than a big pile of chitine from that ultimate predator.
I agree that flyrants and some FW creatures are exceptions.
Btw, it's just a frech point of view or not?

xttz wrote:The Toxicrene *could* be useful in a niche kind of way. It's pretty lethal to MCs (and especially Wraith-stuff), although it's debatable if a Dimachaeron is better. Really it boils down to another unit easily capable of killing massed infantry and light vehicles, which was never an issue for Tyranids to begin with. Good if you want to run a theme list with Malanthropes and Venomthropes I guess, but nothing exciting.
That Maleceptor is actually insultingly bad. It needs 12 warp charges per turn to make use of it's power, but only generates 2 and has BS3 to boot. That won't be an issue of course as the 4+/5++ means it'll be a smoking crater by turn 2. They say never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity, but the only explanation I have for this is that the rules writers are both dumb AND wanted to send a big 'feth-you' to Tyranid players.
Yeah, IF this is accurate info, I don't hate the Toxicrene. It could have a role in a slower moving "mass" build alongside Dakkafexes or whatever. I think it can be fairly killy. The armor save is a headscratcher, but screen it and use terrain and you'll have 3+ cover or better.
Like I said earlier, the Maleceptor seems to be the Zoanthrope/Warp Blast experience. You need to throw FAR too many dice to get it to operate.

It's not the dice you need to throw at the brain bug. It's the fact that it still hits on a 4+ according to those stats.

Well you know those Pathfinders who have a 5+ armour but a 2+ Cover Save?

This Attack won't do gak to them as it'll have died by the time it gets in range

I don't actually play 'nids, so it's really not any skin off my nose in terms of lists and game functionality. I just remember reading awesome bits of fluff that painted them as an indiscriminate, all-consuming horde. That very evocative image seems to jar with the way 'nids have developed and how they appear on the tabletop, which seems odd given that we're all supposed to be forging the narrative these days. I can accept that the change has happened, but I don't have to like it.

The problem is that without a class that lets our big beasties move 12" we're going to be hosed. There are simply to many bullets out there right now for 6" moving beasties that don't carry a 2+ and some form of invul/cover save.
They look cool though. I would love to be able to justify adding them to my armies. I just don't think I can. It's the same way I feel about pretty much any big bug without wings.

I keep getting questions about a Tyranids Codex release and here's some info.
1. This is a model release no Tyranids codex.
2. A Campaign book will be released and if I remember correctly it's called Leviathan.
3. Blood Angels are still coming.
4. There will be a starter set that contains BA and Tyranids. It will be similar to Storm Claw.
5. Hope to update Blood Angel rumors this week.

Oh, I'm sure I'll pick them up at some point. But it's going to be when I can use store credit, trade somthing, or find a stupidly good deal on them. Since it'd pretty much just be to have them and not use them. At least outside of a highlander format.
