Yeah so far, other than Despair, the Harvesters aren't doing it for me either. That could change depending on when they start finalizing the models and renders though.

After watching the video and going over the alpha rules some more, I'm noticing that there are similarities between how game turns are done in TCGs (trading card games). You have the start of round, start of phase, what is done in a phase, end of phase and end of round. It can sound complicated but it is pretty straight forward. The part that I didn't really pay attention to originally was initiative.

INITIATIVE
At the beginning of the phase the players roll-off, and the winner may decide who has the Initiative for that phase. The player that has Initiative may activate all his units once, however each player may only have Initiative up to 2 times per round, regardless of the roll-off result.

I had previously thought that it was roll, then if you won you had initiative so choose to move, shoot or assault. In the beginning of a round, knowing someone can only have initiative twice (that means every player gets 2 turns every round, no matter what), it could be a better strategy to keep initiative and choose to activate units. When in Phase 3 or 4 though it is better to choose to let your opponent go first and give them initiative. Or if they happened to get initiative in Phase 4, then the next round Phase 1 and 2 if you won, it is in your best interest to give them initiative so they are forced to get fatigue. Now granted there are heroes, cards that can effect initiative and rolls as well but it does provide some interesting twists... in most games you want initiative, especially if you can shoot first and kill them before they can do anything. I feel like it can help balance someone who doesn't roll well but also provide a different strategy that could change combat results in a round.

Probably not long since they seem to want to get casting etc right away,

but getting these things set up always seems to take a lot longer than expected

We don't unfortunately and they haven't fully decided when the PM will launch. After the KS closes it can take 15-30 days before funds are released. I expect that time will be spent modeling and finalizing orders for the printed stuff. If they are smart they will do a KS survey, that basically says "What heroes and Core box you are interested in". It doesn't mean backers are locked in at that but that does let them start production, as soon as modeling is done, based on those initial numbers. Given their timeline I expect the official pledge manager to come out in late Jan/Feb and probably be open for at least 4 weeks. They could technically keep it open as late as May/June and still maintain their schedule, providing everything gets from China in time. Also providing they do the previous survey to get a base idea of what needs to be started.

Yeah my issue is I'm broke before Christmas so I'd be in for a $1 and then hope that the PM doesn't finish before Jan so I can bump it up.

Update #37

New Hero & Gameplay Example
Comment
3 likes

Hello backers,

As we are reaching the final 24 hours of the campaign, we are going to be gradually revealing new things for the campaign. With that said, we are making a new character available: Dexx Vogel.

You can add Dexx to your pledge for $15 or select him as one of your Hero options from now on. Here is a little background story to give you a feel for this vicious Sayx commander:

Dexx had a brilliant career on earth as an executive at Increcom. However his extravagance and taste, that were not always legal, put him in numerous problems with the law. His money and influence as a member of Increcom saved him from jail on more than one occasion but everything has a limit.

Fed up with his multiple scandals the directors of the company decided to get rid of him by sending Dexx away from Earth as an officer in the Sayx Military. Commanding elite forces of the company, Dexx could unleash his sadism and simultaneously generate benefits for Sayx, and therefore Increcom.

Win-Win.

Today we are going to show you an example of how contesting objectives and heroes works. Note that this a simplified example for illustration purposes, and that some of the card text may change.

The table setup we have here is taken in the middle of a round, and the players have already taken one phase each. The Ares player is at the top with 1 squad which contains Bitsie, whilst the Riffs player is at the bottom with 2 squads, one of which contains Fink.

At the center of the table you can see 2 Krithium points, here represented by Krithium crates, which are going to be the focal point of this gameplay example.

Phase 3 starts and the Ares have the Initiative. The Ares player has prepared his force and decks with a strategy to collect Krithium and play powerful cards from his Armory. For this he has taken Bitsie, which allows her unit to move an additional 2” thanks to her “Fast” ability.

Because of this the player decides not to shoot at the Riffs squad that is in the open, but instead moves 8” toward the Krithium crate in order to contest it.

[image]https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/003/008/163/719c8308c0dbf2e763a9cdf8a1bb0c49_large.jpg?1417708097[/image]

The next phase starts, and the Riffs have the Initiative. The Riffs player has prepared his decks with very flexible cards which can be boosted with Krithium. To give him more flexibility he has taken Fink, who has the ability to use any ability for one round.

Because of this the player decides to move his left squad toward the left Krithium crate in order to contest it. Seeing how the Ares player is already contesting the right Krithium crate, the Riffs player decides to give Fink and his squad the “Fast” ability in order to move 8” toward the Krithium crate and contest it too.

The next Round starts, and now we can look at who gets to collect Krithium. The left Krithium crate is being contested by the Riffs player, so he receives Krithium. The right Krithium crate however is being contested by both players, so neither one receives Krithium.

By moving his squad to contest the right Krithium crate the Riffs player has denied the Ares player those resources, whilst also receiving resources from the left Krithium crate. Smart move!

That’s it for right now. We hope you enjoyed this little gameplay example, and if you have any questions please post them in the comments below!

I'm not so worried about not getting the free stuff as long as I customize the starter box.

I'm looking at putting $1 now and the upgrading to the below if the PM stays open long enough, or wait for retail. I have lots of Darklands stuff from their last KS to get in the mean time as this probably wont hit retail until late 2015 which is a long way away.

You don't have to worry about losing the ability to choose your core game box. The customization of the Starter Box and Silver Backs (PDFs maybe, not sure on that but don't see why it wouldn't be?). They are considered global changes that aren't effected by your pledge level. It means you will still get them at a $1 pledge or any pledge level.

On Game Size:

Creator SCALE GAMES LLC 27 minutes ago

@Ed Leech - When we say that we want the game and armies to be customizable to your own playstyle, we really mean it. This means that whilst one player might throw 50 models on the table, the next player might focus his efforts on an elite force of just 25 models. At the same time, whilst we can think of where we envision the game size to be, it really is only going to be clear once the game gets to the public and people figure out what size they like best. Maybe we think that a certain amount of models is the perfect size, but find that people like to play with double those models, or maybe half. What we can say for sure right now is that the game plays well for small games of 15-20 models per side, to big games of 40-50 models per side.

Update #38

Fallen Frontiers Final 24 Hours!

Hello everyone,

We have made it to the final 24 hours of the Fallen Frontiers campaign, and with this our journey on Kickstarter is about to end!

As a special thank you to all of you who have stuck with us since the beginning, we are going to make some of the Stretch Goals heroes already available now, in order to give you the most options possible.

This means that Fink Draad, Reaper and Drax Vatar are available right now for you to select as one of your hero choices, or to take as an add-on for $15 each.

Due to this we are also going to be moving the Art Book a little closer, and if we make it to $120,000 we will be able to unlock this awesome book full of Art and Background Story to the Fallen Frontiers universe.

Now that doesn’t mean that the Kickstarter is already over, as we still have something hidden that we might be revealing soon...

Our next Stretch Goal is another FREE Hero for every eligible pledge level, so share the campaign with your friends, spread the word around the net, and let’s smash that $110,000 goal!

P.S.: Here is an Ares Officer we painted up for you, enjoy.

I've been on the fence about backing this KS for a while, but I jumped aboard when I saw an Early Bird Assault Trooper slot appear.

I still haven't decided what two factions to get, It is an even battle between Riffs, Sayx and Harvesters.

Choices, choices...

I'm going Sayx + Riffs Core Box. Then I'll get additional Ares to get all three factions. So far Harvesters haven't shown me anything to make me want them really bad. Although I'll probably pick up Despair... I can't get enough female miniatures. ^_^

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think it's the two Sayx female heroes that are drawing me towards that faction.

But the Riffs have a really cool Peter Jackson's Orks in space thing going on which I really like, especially the Berserkers.

And the Harvesters have a bit of a Cenobite vibe which I find equally appealing. It's a shame that they don't have more completed sculpts to showcase.

I wasn't fond of the Ares but have recently started to come around after seeing some of the unpainted Troopers.

It really is a tough decision, I may well follow suite and pick up three factions if I can justify it to myself!

I quite like the Harvester Behemoths - they remind me of the old Doom Mancubus! And they will be some seriously chunky resin models.

I think the faction is not helped by the relatively static posing of the concept art. Are the necroslaves aggressive? Implacable and relentless? Cowed but vicious? The concept art is just the same basic anatomy drawing with armour plates added/removed, but judging by the actual models from other factions I think the final version will be a bit more interesting.

Maaaan I hope we can make those last $4000 in 8 hours. Those of us going down the "2 different pledges on different accounts" route get an extra 2 characters per unlock, not just 1...

Yeah it has definitely been a strange campaign but I can't wait to see the miniatures. From what I've seen of the various versions, the quality looks great. I also want to see the game play developed more... oddly I'm more concerned that they won't have enough time to finish the full game design than I am the miniatures. Alpha rules seems like fairly far out from where they should be to get printing done in time. Not that I expect them to be stellar, usually KS miniatures game rules are hit and miss but I am interested in some of the unique nature in their game mechanics (because I like deck builders, being a TCG player originally).

I think that the Horseshoe Of Massiveness KS Campaign Funding Trend will be a bit more rare going forward.

Especially for 'boutique resin miniatures'!

Still, I hope we can get the remaining $2,500 in the last 2 hours to get that extra free hero unlocked!

Last 2 Hours & Lots of New Things!

Hello everyone,

We are heading into our last 2 hours, and it seems that our master infiltrators, Ishann and Axl, have finally decided to show up!

You can now add Ishann and Axl to your pledge for $15 each, or select them as one of your Hero choices. Here is a bit of background story to help you understand their mysterious ways:

Ishann is a curious case in the Ares condominium. Although his behavior as a soldier was equal to or better than his peers, his superiors realized he was an exceptional soldier

During a battle in Military Haszen territory, Ishann was lost and could not reach the extraction point, being trapped in enemy territory.

Six months later he appeared at an Ares outpost after stealing a ship from the enemy. His talent for camouflage and combat abilities managed to keep him alive on the battlefield no matter how bad the odds were against him. His ability to go unnoticed made him lethal in combat and Ares high command decided to use his skills to create a unit that exploited that.

The Ares are fearsome when you find them in front of you, but if they appear at your back, you have no chance.

Axl, like everyone in the Sayx, was discovered by the test for newborns as a potential sniper.

His grades during instruction caught the attention of his superior, Dex Vogel, who started using him for personal "Assignments". For years Axl did dirty work for Dex eliminating enemy targets and some other Sayx officers that conflicted with Dex.

Being the weapon of a corrupt generates many enemies, but his survival instinct and his ability to disappear from conflict have kept him alive until now.

Additionally we are opening up some new Add-Ons:

You can now get the Painting DVD by adding $10 to your pledge.

You can now get 3 Big Scenic Bases by adding $5 to your pledge.

The Kickstarter is almost over, so grab those high Early Birds whilst you still can, we don’t know when the next time is going to be when we can offer you such a sweet deal!

P.S.: We want to remind you that this DVD already comes as a free Stretch Goal for all Assault Trooper pledge levels and higher.

Production Update

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update. We are one hour away from finalizing the campaign and we have already started production on Fallen Frontiers!

Here you can see some of the miniatures that we presented during the campaign.

This already reduces your wait to get your hands on... FALLEN FRONTIERS!!!

Yeah still hoping for the same. It does fall under the boutique category although I think the big surge is more likely due the timing of the KS. It also doesn't help that CMoN launched and a couple others this month too on top of Mantic's and Antenocities. Sooooo much money gone in a month. LOL!

Done! Completed with 588 backers pledging $109,578. Production is already started on the miniatures.

With all us $1 pledgers complaining... I'm hoping they'll realize how much money they're passing on and reverse that decision. I have no idea why they did it, the only substantial stretch goals are two human sized figures for gods sake, not like it's going to cost them a fortune to give 100 people (assuming everyone upgrades) 2 figures each...

The people at Scale are pretty decent, I have a sneaking suspicion that as the PM releases one or multiple things will happen.

1) It won't be able to be coded so that when someone upgrades from the $1 Pledge, they don't get stretch goals. At least with the current PM's out there this isn't possible without some creative work-arounds.

2) That they will, despite saying that the PM won't unlock stretch goals, end up unlocking the 3rd free hero option because of the amount made in the PM.

I only say this because I can understand starting out saying what they did. If everyone stayed in the $1 pledge and waited, a good portion of the funds wouldn't have happened. Even the ones that made the decisions still stayed in or they are getting something that the stretch goals are irrelevant. Again even without SG's the savings on the miniatures is really good.

No matter what the decision is though, I'm still looking forward to the game and product.

I am still hoping they open the PM to 'new' backers who weren't able to back during the campaign, just because of the timing of it over the holidays. I do also hope they do allow those who upgrade get SG, even if its because of a technicality ^_^ I also hope they have PM stretch goals that unlock new things.

Even if they wait a couple weeks until the PM is open before making an announcement, they should be able to gauge what the increase amounts are. Providing they are still going up, there isn't a negative reason on why they wouldn't do the above... it would be all completely positive for them. Especially because by then they'll be more examples of their sculpts out.

Hmm - I don't particularly want to stir up drama, but Scale posted a rather inflammatory comment that may be relevant to some of those who pledged for this:

Let us put this to rest. $1.00 Pledges do not receive stretch goals, period. It would not be fair to the people who put forth the funds to unlock the stretch goals for those who did not help at the time the KS was live and needing funding to then also receive them. It was clearly stated that $1 pledges would not receive stretch goals. No manner of Squeaking will change that.

Also, regarding their earlier statement to the contrary:

@Kevin Johnston, we hired a community manager who answered prior to confirming that information, we apologize for that. Thank you for your 1 dollar donation, we do appreciate all support given be it 1 dollar or what ever it maybe. Take care and be well.

So - you are not eligible for any stretch goals unless you pledged at a specific $98 level or above, not even if you upgrade in the pledge manager. Contrary to what their own employee stated while the Kickstarter was live. They do not view pledge manager funds as contributing to the campaign, despite them getting a greater cut of the money at a time of year where (presumably) people have more available to spend. I would imagine that they would also not put these funds towards the $422 required for their next stretch goal. Despite not being affected by this, I really do not see this sort of attitude in a positive light.
