Im wondering if this is just me or do other people do this. When Im playing video games I tend to listen to podcasts or maybe even TV when playing games?
I mostly doo it in open world games, ones where I get bored runnin from one place to another or hunting for leather or skins. Mostly grinding.

Some times, but so many games use sound cues as important elements that it's not something you can do all the time.

If the game has a poor soundtrack, I usually throw on some ambient music or chillout stuff.

There is not this idea.

I often listen to music while playing games, unless it's a game where I absolutely love the soundtrack. Which is rare for me.

Usually this is while playing strategy games, where sound isn't too important apart from giving ambience.

I'm not engaged enough with a game for it to preclude me paying attention to a podcast, I'm not engaged enough with a game to continue playing it.

No.

Then again I don't listen to podcasts, period.

All the time when playing WoW. It's gotten to the point where I have the sound off by default.

I tend to listen to the game I'm playing when playing a game.

For the few things I do listen to I do them separately.

Pretty much 50+% of my childhood was listening to audiobooks while playing computer games. The computer was in the same room as the TV my parents used so I'd have 2 sets of headphones on, one over each ear, with a cassette player hooked to one and the other on the computer.

Have not listened to stuff so often since then, although when I'm missioning in EVE Online I will play it windowed and que up Youtube videos in the background.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

OK but my point was if the game is boring I need a distraction from it I'm not going to wait around for it to "Heat Up". I'm not gonna play at all. I'm not going to pay good money for the privilege of not enjoying my limited free time. If I want to be bored I've got perfectly good walls I can stare at in my apartment for free. I suppose I could listen to stuff while I do that.

I listen exclusively to music and audiobooks, I'm not really a podcast person because I'm old and cantankerous and they are usually by youthful types who annoy me.

If anyone is remotely interested In what I am listening to at the moment, I am halfway through Anthony Horowitz "The House of Silk" I think it is one of the best attempts I have heard to sound like Conan Doyle. Of the hundreds of Holmes stories I have read by other authors, his is some of the best.

Man, if I'm listening to music while I'm playing a game, it's not because I don't want to play the game, it's because I really want to listen to music too.

Thinking about it, I do avoid other distractions when it's a game with plot and such. But I play a lot of turn based strategy games, and those are perfect fits for listening to music.

Very much depends on the game I'm playing.

If it is something I'm playing through again, or something more routine like an mmo, then yes I'll generally have a let's play/podcast on as background noise.

If it is something new or with a good enough soundtrack, the game music stays on.

Occasionally if I am crafting or just doing dailies for the phattest credits in SWTOR I will listen How Did This Get Made or Girl on Guy (Aisha Tyler's podcast).

During turn based games, always. Thats the sort of game where I'm not fully engaged and I have plenty of time between decisions/moves.

When I'm playing Insurgency(fps) or any of the myriad stealth action games, I usually have nothing else playing.

Almost always, yes. I don't listen to podcasts much anymore, since the only one I really enjoyed for a while started to feel really samey, but you can bet that in almost any game I play, the first thing I'm doing is cranking the music/sound effects down to minimum and turning on a show on Netflix. Honestly, I have found so few game soundtracks that I actually enjoy nowadays that I don't even bother listening to them - even ones that people swear are good, just aren't very memorable to me.

I'll play some music if I'm playing a game like Diablo 3 or something online, but much more than that and my gameplay suffers.

I wonder if it wouldn't be so demanding of my attention if I was playing something slower like Civilization or a Total War game.

I will listen to the game's sound even if it's annoying, i often turn the music way down but not off. For some reason i equate it with watching adverts, i feel it's my duty to developer. Recently Guacamelee had some VERY annoying music in certain levels but some of it was really good so it kinda balanced out.

The last time i listened to a podcast while gaming it was in GTA 5 when i was hoovering up all the dumb collectables, UFO/Letters/submarine parts as it didn't require any skill.

The Project Gotham Racing series and a few other original xbox games would let you listen to your own music through an in-game interface from your Xbox hard disk, a feature that sadly disappeared in the 360 generation.

I often have a podcast, or more talking based youtube vids in the background. And I usaly listen to my own music, unless the game has a really good soundtrack. I have a really eclectic taste in music, so I generally have something I like to fit any game.
