I saw gold/white. I also saw two other versions of the dress next to it. And it's been said by many that both are correct, just depends on your eyes. Don't need someone on here telling me I'm 100% wrong.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Definitely blue/black. I mean, damnit, if you invert the colours on Photoshop (ie. create a negative) you can get white/gold, so I have no bloody clue how people can see that from the original.

I can flip between them depending where I look at the picture. In fact, when I first looked at it quickly, I saw it as light blue and gold. If I cover all but the bottom of the dress, it looks like a blue and black dress in a bright light. If I look at the whole picture, it looks like a white and gold dress in a shadow or back-lit.

This is a good example of how context can make one shade or color look different.

A and B are the exact same color.

Context causes our brain to trick itself. You see a shadow, therefore you compensate and believe that square b is the lighter shade of grey when it really isn't.

I suppose it's a question of.

"What colour is the dress?" And "what colour is the picture of the dress?"

I dunno about the first one, but to my eyes, my answer for the second would be 'blue (lavenderish?) and gold.

My friend showed me this yesterday, I thought she was trying to annoy me on purpose. But if I stand further back from the screen and squint, the white and gold image of the dress does look blue and black. Though people who see it that way up close must have really dodgy eyesight/screens.

Not really. If you concentrate on the "gold", you see it's really just the light bouncing off it.

If you auto-correct the washed out picture for contrast, it's blue and black, like the actual dress.

Or they just recognize that it's a photo of a blue and black dress with really poor white balance and exposure settings. Don't forget that the actual dress is blue and black, so anyone claiming that it's "really" white and gold is simply wrong.

Nope. People who say the dress is gold / white are wrong. Hands down. The IMAGE of the dress, or rather that specific one, makes it look like it's white / gold.

That is why I was careful to state that I was talking about the white and gold image of the dress. I believe you that the colours are false, however, it has been shown with colour sampling that the pixles being output are closer to white and gold, certainly no black.

Saw it as light grey-blue and gold. I know for a fact that while my depth perception and distance vision is rubbish I have perfect color perception so its obviously a lighting trick.

Ultimate marketing, and it occured by complete accident.

I bet a lot of ad agencies are looking at how to capitalise on this and kicking themselves that they didn't simply engineer this for their own product and reap free publicity and kudos for their advertising house.

It isn't really blue and gold. More like light blue and brown. A slight greenish brown.

Last night I couldn't sleep. I reached for my phone and opened facebook, and saw one of these posts immediately. I was utterly certain it was white and gold and had no idea how anyone could think otherwise.

I read some more stuff and went back to it, and was surprised that it was now clearly blue and black. Unambiguously. I spent the 20 minutes trying to figure it out. I could not see white and gold again.

This morning I woke up and checked immediately. It was white and gold, and I was like yeaaah, I'm not crazy.

Oh, I wouldn't jump so quick into conclusions

Anyhoo, basically the whole thing is about our brain trying to correct obviously bad lighting in the original picture. Some people's brain corrects it to white & gold, others blue & black: now, the latter group is correct, but only by coincidence - not because they're smarter!

Really interesting thing is how few people saw it as blue/gold (the actual colours in the original picture) and NOBODY saw it as white/black. Apparently, our brain realizes somehow that such a colour combination would be impossible with that lighting and disregards the whole idea.

(btw, I originally saw it white & gold, then later it turned to blue & black. I can still see the white/gold but only with help of changed reference colours).

Although it is (partly) the same principle, TheDress is actually trickier than the famous Grey square illusion: because, it is not hard for us to consciously realize that light grey might look as dark grey under different lighting conditions: however with the dress, we have blue turning into white, and black turning into gold - completely unintuitive! That's why it has people baffled.
