I mean i haven't read the army book or anything but I imagine knowing fantasy that outside of say stuff like WoW I can't imagine Dwarfs actually approving of flying machines. I thought they like to keep their feet on the ground. The idea of flying machines in a dwarf world or army seems out of place considering they live underground. ITs really silly and looks more like a world of warcraft toy than a warhammer miniature.

Why not Golems in the army? powered by runes that would have looked far far better than what they got which looked more like robotniks flying machine

Spoiler:

Or if not golems how about armored suits like space marine centurions dwarfs in tall bulky metal suits. Even like captured monsters from deep undergrounf is a better idea like a tamed wingless dragon (can't remember what they are called) or hell a balrog or something... I just don't understand the logic of flying machines in a dwarf army seems out of place to me.

but i guess none of this actually matters anymore fluff wise

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Would you want to walk up all the stairs between sub level 400 and the nearest bathroom on sub level 6?

But I agree entirely. I think the connection is supposed to be because dwarves are great artificers and users of technology.

Because in a game where armies live and die on maneuvering blocks, the dwarves would have an even harder time competing if they TOTALLY surrendered the movement phase.

The dwarfs HAD giant rune golems, but no living runesmith knows how to activate them and there is... well was, not enough magic to power them.

I love the gyrocoptor models and I think we're going to see more dwarf contraptions of that ilk in 9th as they try to differentiate them from other dwarves from other settings.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Dwarves actually are suspicious of the flying machines. At least the older, more cynical, and more experienced dwarves are.

The flying machines are the creations of crazy young engineers. As is the Empire Steam Tank.

Nope, warhammer dwarfs used to have big rune golems. Not in game, but in lore.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also flying machines were being worked on during the war of vengeance so the idea isn't exactly "new"

Because, we need the Vietnam war in the Old World :p
Most likely they have those instead of some kind of awesome golems so the army isn't so sedentary. Really, it's annoying being outpaced by everyone else, so why not give them something that lets them go fast and far? And they don't seems like the kind who would settle for horses or something pathetic like that. They need to invent something to do it. To the flying machines!

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

I'm guessing that WHFB dwarfs will get a fluff refresh in 9th to be more focused on mobile warmachines, like the fliers. As cool as the traditional tolkienesque dwarf fluff is, an M3 infantry-based stubborn gunline army is complete trash as far as game design is concerned.

After Demonslayer, GW had better sell some dwarf flyers. They created the demand.

Dwarfs have two different "things" going for them. There's the engineering aspect of dwarfs, and then there's the rune aspect.

If you go way back to first edition, you can read the following:

"Of all the races of the world, it is the dwarfs who show the greatest aptitude for the still young science of technology. The famous dwarven engineers guild operates under a cloak of obsessive secrecy, producing the finest engiens of war and machineries of destruction in the world. A dwarf army may be accompanied by more war engines, of more varying kinds, than any other."

The war engines and science were one of the primary traits of GW dwarfs that set them apart from other fantasy dwarves. At the time though, they were only equipped with
Bolt throwers, Bigger bolt throwers, stone throwers, cannon, organ guns, flame cannon, and fire throwers. But the essence of GW dwarfs being the science race was already there.

In latter editions they introduced gyrcopters as an invention to help "enable strongholds to keep in contact by flying directly over the difficult mountain terrain which may be infested with enemies." And I don't see why dwarfs wouldn't want to fly either. Short folk aren't any more averse to heights than tall folk. If you fall from 500 feet you're dead whether you'r 4'6", or 6'4".

Because a dwarfs place in beneath the mountains. With earth underfoot & strong dwarf-made tunnel above.

In the lore the Dawi looked down upon the Skarrenawi or "Hill dwarfs" for moving out of the mountains & into the hills to make trade with the Elgi.

The sky & flight was seen as something for the Elgi & their foul Drakk. What need does a dawi have to fly like a Drakk when he can build strong secure tunnels?

The sky is blue, soft, fickle... Like the Elgi.
Stone is strong, unyielding, enduring... Like the Dawi.

This is why they would not want to and why the original inventors were at risk of being expelled from the engineers guild.

Shas'O, how old is that fluff you are referencing? Gyro copters and airships seem to have been around since the days when the background coalesced into a cohesive whole. I admit my collection starts later with 5th edition and WHFRP, but I can't remember a time when the dwarfs did not have some form of aircraft. I also don't remember seeing very many references to Hill Dwarfs. That sounds like a DnD thing that WFB would have dropped way back in the day.

It's in the time of legends: War of vengeance trillogy. So November 19th 2013. But it is way back in terms of lore.
