Possibly a fan film, then. Definitely not a legit thing.

I figured it must have been a fan film, but to be shown on the big screen in an FAO Schwarz? Thought it would be odd they'd show off a fan film. I've searched for it. Like I said, found it once on eBay. Never found it anywhere else or since. That was around...15 years ago?

I was not involved in any fan flick.

With some of the friends I had in the late 90s, 2000s and as hard core SW fans they were, and the cons we went to, I think I would have heard at least something about a SOTE movie, even a short clip.

Wheres Wedge?

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.

Nope. Wasn't toy figurines.

I'm beginning to lean towards 11 year old me (around 96-97) and 15 year old me (2001, at time of finding on eBay) must be crazy.

Of course, it's been my dream goal to track it down at all costs, so 30 year old me must be just as crazy!

Bear in mind that Empire was a completely different story (basically a chase movie), so it's not impossible.

For all their faults, Clones and Sith had different plots. Clones actually has one of the more intriguing plot lines of the saga, it just got buried under crap directing, acting and dialogue.

Let's look at it this way:

Episode IV: had a Death Star and Vader's helmet, and was good.
Episode V: had an ice planet and Vader's helmet and was good.
Episode VI: had a Death Star and Vader's helmet and was good.
Episode I: Had none of that and we got Annie going "yippie" and Jar Jar Binks.
Episode II: Had none of that and we got the space version of "I wish I knew how to quit you".
Episode III: Had a few minutes of Vader's helmet and a look at a Death Star and was the least horrible of the prequels.

Based on this sound scientific examination of all previous movies Episode VII will be the best Star Wars yet because it had a Death Star, an Ice Planet, and Vader's helmet.

You can't argue against evidence of that magnitude.

Thats an excellent point.

Well I keep saying. I don't think it's possible to be worse than the Star Wars prequels. With all the money involved, you have to really really really feth up to produce films so bad.

Hahahah Yeah. "Looks squarely at Star Trek Into Darkness."

I'm fairly sure any shot of it moving remotely fast is CGI, there is only so fast a ball can self move. Every single self moving ball I have seen struggles to move quickly and stop. I suspect it's a 100% real prop until it has to keep up with the characters. Without a traction lumpy coating you see on some mechanical moving balls they are among the most painful things to watch.

I suspect the shot (judging by it's look and speed) is a CGI shot of the droid moving quickly. Or they fast forwarded his movement and then CGI'd the background to move quickly.

Regardless it's a pretty cool prop...

Well, it's an actual robot that moves, not just a static prop.

Yes I said moves quickly it's CGI... there is no way it moves as fast as it will appear on the big screen. It's speedy movement is certainly CGI.

As I said above, it's likely a prop until it needs to move faster than a slow walk. It is a smooth sphere after all.

I think it could move fairly decently in sand without too much of a slope.

I doubt it. I am happy to be proven wrong, but I suspect most of the movie you will be looking at CGI for the droid when it's moving about at a decent speed.

I don't know if you have seen things like RC balls or mechanically moving balls but most of them rely on momentum to move at higher speeds and even they fail to move very well over much terrain. This thing can't move too fast so it's head can stay on along with the usual traction and stopping issues these spherical movers have.

I think it's the first trailer when it's zooming around and looks at the audience. I would say that is definitely CGI. Perhaps it's on a treadmill background or fast forwarded etc to speed it up maybe? But likely still CGI. But the prop itself will be very slow moving.

Certainly more convincing than R2D2 moving through sand.

BB-8, as he appears in the film, is done with a combination of puppetry and robotics aided by CGI.

I believe that the awesome BB-8 from Celebration Anaheim (which was built by Sphero) was made especially for the event, I read it somewhere not too long ago (it might have been an interview with Sphero's president).

Never realized quite how small BB-8 is until a side by side with R2.

I also like the sound of its 'voice'. Its kind of eerie compared to R-2.
