Subject: Re:Star Wars The Force Awakens -- full of spoilers so beware !
Porkins flew under the call sign Red Six during the Battle of Yavin. After arriving at the approaching battlestation, the Rebels initiated strafing runs in the area around the trench.[2] Porkins's skill with strafing played an important part in the success of the early runs,[12] but the Rebel fighters came under heavy fire from a turbolaser emplacement near one of the surface's many deflection towers. Darklighter moved to attack the tower, telling Porkins to provide cover. The two pilots dived towards the surface, opening fire on the tower and scoring a direct hit.[2] However, as the tower exploded, Porkins was caught by debris from the blast, causing instruments throughout his fighter to malfunction.[13] Though his X-wing fighter was generally maneuverable enough to avoid the Death Star's sluggish turbolasers, incorrect readings from his instrumentation left him unable to judge his altitude and he found himself too low and an easy target for enemy fire.[14] Darklighter attempted to warn his friend that he was too low and advised him to eject, but Porkins felt that he could control the problem. Before he was able to regain control, however, he was hit by enemy turbolaser fire and was killed as his X-wing exploded around him.[2]
Jek Porkins was an X-wing pilot who fought for the Rebel Alliance during the Battle of Yavin. He flew as part of Red Squadron, where his callsign was "Red Six." His craft began to malfunction, causing him to be killed by turbolaser fire.[3] Over three decades later, Porkins was remembered through the Porkins Belly Run, a Resistance flight maneuver named in his honor.[4]

And I thought you were saying there's room for everyone's opinion? I wasn't lamenting the disagreement- I rather enjoy it. I was lamenting the sheer volume to respond to. But by all means, make a passive aggressive remark that demonstrates your tolerance of dissenting opinions.
He literally just explodes after telling Biggs he can hold it. At no time does he ever take a visible blaster hit (unlike Luke, who is hit multiple times but his ship is perfectly fine).

Indeed.
Honestly, my reaction to that scene was 'Hey, a two-seater TIE. That's pretty cool!'... It never even occured to me to be bothered about never having seen such a thing before, any more than I was bothered by any of the new aliens on Jakku.

I dunno. I think plethora of Tie variants is getting a bit silly. A few were fine but were up to a dozen or more now? It's like Forge World saying, "Hm. What else can we do to a Land Raider?"

Well technically most of the Tie variants are now non-canon.
I think we're just down to; the Tie Fighter, Tie Interceptor, Tie Bomber, Tie ADVANCED, and the the Special Forces... Special?
But oh boy did we have a lot of Tie's in the old EU XD

You know, if seeing a new kind of TIE fighter doesn't cause an existential crisis. that means you weren't doing it right.

Casual fans are ruining the franchise.

Isn't everything in that Star Wars game essentially canon since Disney signed off on the Second Edition?

Actually, that just makes the argument for terrible writing stronger. Finn is in the sanitation department? Of the stationary base? Is that why Kylo brought him in the star destroyer to Jakku to attack the village? It was obvious that the sanitation line was thrown in for humor, but then they called back to it later, madding relevance. However, that just makes so many other parts of the movie seem ridiculous. How many children do they need to condition from birth to tend to Starkiller Base's sanitation requirements?
The entire movie is filled with lazy shortcuts. I'm honestly confused how people are arguing it's not. Nothing is really earned in the whole film.
You guys don't see why we might expect more from the fancy new TIE than that it looks exactly like the old TIE in silhouette with a fancy new antenna? Advance, Interceptor, and Bomber all brought a new shape. TIE SF requires close attention to differentiate from TIE FO, at least from the outside. That's pretty sad.

A lot, and it's probably cheaper than hiring contractors who might not even show for personal political reasons:

I'd actually consider being in Sanitation a good explanation for why Finn is the way he is. He's not as rough as other Storm Troopers, maybe because while they were off waging war, he was cleaning the floor. Why did he then find himself on Jakku? Don't know. Maybe a stint in places like Sanitation is part of the training process? Maybe where they stick the young ones when they're not training but still too young to wear the armor?

Well, no, I would assume that Kylo brought him in the Star Destroyer to Jakku because by that point in time he had been posted to Kylo's Star Destroyer...

Was anyone actually arguing that?
The discussion I've been seeing has been specifically to do with the whole two-seater TIE fighter thing.

As amusing as the idea is, I doubt that a Storm Trooper posted to Sanitation was actually cleaning the floors.
Maybe the First Order is just really protective of their garbage, having learnt from the Empire's experience that sometimes prisoners utilise it in daring escape plans?

Of course the most logical explanation is that Finn was part of the engineer corps before being transferred to frontline infantry duty.

Yeah... the opening crawl really should have disolved to an artsy shot of a mop bucket eclipsing a window. Pan out to Finn frantically trying to clean the rec room floor before the lunch rush.
God, that woudl have been exciting!
Will this do?

He did work in the sanitation department, so it's likely he would have known.
I watched it again yesterday and enjoyed it the second time just as much as the first.
Frankly, Star Wars isn't Shakespeare or Chekhov. It never has been. It's a fast-paced, SF Fantasy action film, and this new one also has to trade on the nostalgia lots of people have for the original three (40 years old now!) It would have been a big mistake to radically change the way the film works in terms of pacing and exposition.
I honestly never noticed there were two different marks of TIE fighter, or whether they were shooting their rear guns or nor. I just thought it was good to keep the basic TIE fighter design of the original film and updated it nicely with new colours and weapons. It's inarguably one of the most recogniseable and characterful space fighters ever designed, much more so than the X Wing in my view.
I double loved it that Daisy Ridley was allowed to use a middle-class British standard accent with traces of Estuary English.
I think Rey is going to turn out to be the daughter of Luke Skywalker, hidden on Jakku to protect her from the scourge of the New Order when Kylo Ren smashes up the Jedi school. The ages of the various characters match up pretty well. It explains her force powers, affinity to Luke's light sabre, and her resemblance to Leia, who would be her aunt.

I agree. I had my second sitting on saturday and there really seems to be no other way around it. I have, however, ordered the novelization as it's supposed to have additional information that is not in the movies.

That would seem to be where it is going, however, I've been thinking about it, and I don't see how they are going to begin the next film if that is the case.
It seems like that would be a pretty important conversation for Luke and Rey to have off-screen, but then no Star Wars film has ever started where the last film left off, there is usually a gap of years, and of course the obligatory crawl and pan to space scene. So I really don't know when he would have the "I am your father" conversation. It's certainly not going to be at the start of the movie, unless they just played it down even more than Kylo Ren being Han Solo's son... But then it seems weird that they would build it up for a whole movie and not make a big deal of who her parents are.
Unless J.J.Abrams just deliberately screwed over the next director, I don't see how they can pick up the next movie and still have Luke be her father.

The way it could work is if Luke and Rey don't realise they are father and daughter.
This might happen if Luke's wife took Rey away during infancy to prevent her from getting involved in the Jedi training, became estranged fromLiuke and got killed before Luike could find Rey. This scenario partly explains Luke's self-imposed exile, too.
In the second film, Rey persuades Luke to train her. He is drawn back to the Resistance, and perhaps in an encounter with Kylo, gets killed like Obi Wan and Rey's parentage is revealed, simultaneously giving Rey a motive for revenge and a motive for mercy in that Kylo would be revealed as her cousin.

Personally, I'm expecting that years WON'T go by between VII and VIII. The issues at the end of TFA go much deeper than a parentage question (and yes, I think it's obvious and works great that Rey is his daughter) -- it seems clear that Luke became a recluse for deeply personal reasons, including guilt and sadness. Does the guy at the end of the film really look like someone who even wants company, let alone a new student to train and/or a return to the Rebellion/Resistance and the life of a Jedi?
There's LOTS of emotional stuff there to sort through (which makes for great material for filmmaking), and I think that the filmmakers involved with this trilogy are smart enough not to try to handwave it all away in the crawl.
As I said before, just as TFA was about the search for Luke, I have a feeling that VIII will be about healing his soul and getting him back in the game...probably while things are going very badly for the Resistance.
