In the old canon, you would be right. But this is the new canon. As it stands, they are evidently using the "Rogue Squadron" name to tell a story that would have occurred before Rogue Squadron existed, no reason why they couldnt have done that with Wraith Squadron instead.

Right... because being able to know how to leverage large amounts of man power and resources couldn't at all be a good trait for a strategic level commander to have.

Mon Mothma was susceptible to Lando's particular brand of pelvic sorcery. Han became a 'Captain', then promoted to General for getting himself and Leia captured and imprisoned by a crime lord. They wanted a leader- and Lando was a leader desperate enough to join the Rebels.
We all know Nien Nunb did the heavy lifting on that assault run.

Lando had combat credentials too. Someone must have told the Rebel Alliance about his little maneuver at the battle of Taanab.

That's an assumption.
"Rogue" is a common enough moniker that it could have nothing to do with Rogue Squadron.

Yes, because I'm sure the guy that picked the name of the film had absolutely no idea about the existence, meaning, significance, and importance of the name "Rogue Squadron" within the Star Wars Expanded Universe and its just purely coincidence that they chose that title.

There is a reason why the couldn't and didn't do it: "Rogue One" sounds about a million times cooler than "Wraith One."

Would it be completely unlikely that the pilots that survived the attack on the death star decided to pick the name Rogue Squadron in part to honor the group that got the plans that made the attack possible in the first place?
I am not aware of an official EU reason why they picked the name, so it would be easy enough to handwave that origin story into existence.

That's not what he was saying.
What he was saying was that it's a common enough name, that it's entirely possible that there was a rebel cell known as 'Rogues' that had nothing whatsoever to do with the later-established Rogue Squadron.
Or, for that matter, it's entirely possible that the 'Rogue Squadron' we know about from later wasn't the first 'Rogue Squadron' in the rebellion. Particularly if they're a covert unit, it's not unlikely that few people would have heard of them.

It has been a long time since I read any of the EU books, but I believe there was a rogue squadron made of academy washouts who had "other" skill sets that were involved in death star Intel gathering. Off to google...

The majority of cinema viewers don't care/know about the licensed fan fiction of the EU, so it doesn't really matter if they use it or not. Being concerned about how a film may or may not line up with the EU only leads to pain (and probably loneliness) which in turn leads to anger, ect ect Dark Side.

Just curios to see if after declaring the EU out, that Disney would plunder the basics of a short story from the star wars adventure journal.

I'd prefer that they adapted the best parts of the EU than ignore it entirely. For instance, I'm hoping the Solo family (Han and Leia) have force sensitive twin children, one of whom falls to the dark side, the other becomes Luke's apprentice or something. As long as the original source material and authors are acknowledged of course.

Aren't we sort of getting parts of that with Force Awakens? I mean, isn't one of the characters (the girl who helps the black former-stormtrooper) the daughter of one or both Leia and Han, and isn't she force sensitive?

I'm excited about this. Every since I was a kid, I always wanted to know about how the rebellion got the plans. I mean, the first part of the story we see is in the crawl:
It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.
I'm comfortable with the idea that "rogue squadron" was simply the name for the Rebellions tip of the spear.

Lucasfilm announced today that their first film in the new standalone Star Wars stories series, Rogue One, has begun principal photography. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) is directing Rogue One, which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.
I'm going with an idea similar to what we're seeing in "Star Wars: Rebels", where "Rogue One" was the nom de guerre of a Rebel cell leader who unites some other cells to go after the plans.

Heck, there are plenty of SW fans who don't care about the EU.
More specifically, they tend to care a lot about the EU stuff they like, and very little about the stuff they don't like, or haven't read.
For me, Star Wars is about, in rough descending order of importance: The original trilogy, The Thrawn Trilogy, the lore associated with the decipher TCG, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, The Stackpole X-wing books, the prequel trilogy, Shadows of the Empire, stuff by Kevin J. Anderson, and then a pile I'll generously call "the rest:" The Courtship of Princess Leia, The black fleet crisis, etc.
I doubt I'll alter my view horribly much because somebody decides that the Thrawn books aren't canon anymore. Besides, life is more interesting with an unreliable narrator.

To be clear, Disney never said that they were ditching everything from the EU, just that the current EU material would no longer be canon. That doesn't stop them from including any part of that material in whatever they choose to do with the storyline moving forwards... at which point it becomes canon again.

My only prediction is that in the 6 months before the release of this film, we will see the word 'rogue' misspelled a lot of times.
Will it also have Sean Bean dying in it? Will it have Michelle Rodriguez playing a tough chick who dies in the third act? Will Samuel L Jackson say 'melon-fether'? Will Christopher Walken make weird eyes and over emphasise random syllables?
I should stop now.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another.
