Am I the only one who thinks that the Mephiston model sucks?

For the bas-*ss that he's supposed to be his model is appallingly posed, The details is great, the chest plate, shoulder pads, psychich hood....but the pose seems so static, I actually cannot bear to own the model and as such I plan on kitbashing my own.

Which model do you think needs a more updated pose?

I'd have to say Kharn the Betrayer. He has a very static pose especially considering he's supposed to be a close combat guy. Something more like his 30k pose would be awesome.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I agree with Mephiston being very boring for what he is, I for one plan on making a custom version sometime. The Belial one is rather boring as well. Cypher needs to have an updated model though I'll probably end up custom making him as well.

There is not this idea.

He looks very upset that the little guy isn't sharing any of those rocks.

@Beard: Meph does need plenty of work to improve that old pose...
unfortunately, it was common across so many great character models of that era, like Ragnar and Njal, and the original Harlequins:(...

here is my first attempt at fixing him, but i want another crack at him one day:

@edbradders: why not just use 30K Kharn as 40K Kharn???
he has the same weapons loadout, and looks badass...

@welshhoppo: i'll be painting Huron as a Dornian Heresy Blood Angel, where the events of the Horus Heresy are flipped, and the BA went over to Nurgle...
the first things to go will be that terrible fist, and that very shocked looked head...
the rest of the sculpt rocks!!!

@Syngod: the standard Sgt. from the Deathwing knight box makes an awesome Belial...
Cypher is a fun conversion...
i have a mostly plastic one on my table right now, slowly coming together (i still use the original metal backpack, just 'cause i had it left over from the bitz order days)...
he basically just needs a Black Templars sheathed sword spliced with a DA sword handle, and some sculpted hair...
the rest are stock DA plastic bits...

personally, i want a new Ragnar Blackmane...
i've been waiting over twenty years, and it still hasn't happened, but you know that as soon as i finish converting one, they'll release a better version...

cheers

There is a new Ragnar Blackmane. He is built using the Space Wolves upgrade kit and the Grey Hunters box.

he is missing a few details, like the shoulderpad, the fanged boots, and more flowing hair...
i will make a plastic one, but there will still have to be a bit of sculpting done to make him look right...
he also needs Assault Marine legs, to give him some action to match the idea i have in my head...
those new bits on the SW upgrade sprue are very nice, though...

cheers

Consider yourself lucky. No Fists upgrade kit (at least Pedro Kantor has a bitchin' model) besides the Failcast ones. But I agree, the plastic Ragnar isn't perfect, but it absolutely is doable. I wish there were some better running legs for Space Wolves. I would have liked it if most of the Upgrade kits were made with a character in mind the way the Space Wolves Upgrade kit is able to make a fairly good representation of Ragnar.

In answer to the thread, I am not overly thrilled with Captain Karlaen's pose. Seriously dude, you aren't scaring anyone with you pea-shooter. That big hammer, on the other hand. I would have liked to see him in more of an action pose with the hammer being swung. His pose with the left leg kind of lazily stepping forward doesn't really do it for me.

EDIT: If you want a good action posed figure that could form a basis for Ragnar, try and get ahold of an extra Krom Dragongaze, he has a nice pose that would be great for Ragnar.

MeFabio looks pretty good for a static that dates back 20ish years.

Take a look at the other characters from that period and you'll see the plane nature of them (easy to cast up).

Plane as in it's all in the one plane. There isn't much in the way of 3D posing.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I like the Mephiston model. He doesn't need to be leaping around or waving his arms in the air, because he's killing people with his brain.

Ragnar doesn't really need those spiky boots, as that's representing a bit of wargear he's not had since Rogue Trader.

Mephiston is a CC Juggernaut. He absolutely is ripping and tearing his way through enemies. He should have a much more dynamic pose.

He's got quite an imposing stance, stood there as the battle rages around him. He certainly used to be a master psyker, looks like I'm out of date. :(

He could perhaps be a little bigger; Marines have grown slightly since 2nd edition.

Most of the models with goofy poses are older than the posters in this thread, and are from an era when 2-part casting of metal models was really the only way to do it. I love the old minis but then again I do whole armies of retro stuff where they fit in. Abaddon looks tiny and Mephiston looks really flat next to their modern mini counterparts.

The old Asurman sculpt was pretty woeful. Pointing a pistol with his sword in the air. Harldy dynamic for such a vaunted warrior.

Kids these days with their “dynamic posing” and “third dimension”

<waves cane off to the side, parallel with his body>

When I was your age we played with cardboard chits. We were glad when we finally got miniatures. Real lead ones, none of this new fangled “alloy" or “resin" crud. Lick ‘em and go mad lead.

You all are spoiled with your multi-pose plastics, and high detail.

This. Usually that weird pose is called "Partha-Pose," a throwback to the Ral Partha minis days.

I dont really like Kharns pose or the model in general. He is a little too cartoony for my taste. Thats why Ive ordered the bits (Kharns 40K head and his axe arm) I need to create my own version. I will have my stuff either on monday or tuesday so I will start him and post what I come up with for him.

Mephiston is probably my least favorite character model currently in production. There just isn't much I like about the fella.

Here's my most recent take on him:

Though frankly, I never field him, so I'm not sure why I bothered

I play Tau ironically as a statement against cultural imperialism, man. I also use fair trade paints imported from South East Asia. They're hand crafted by native tribesmen from local soil and all natural acrylics. It's really earth friendly. *Sniff* I bet you never heard of it. *Sniff*

Give him a break, he's from 2nd edition.

That being said, as a 2nd ed model his scale is totally off now.

Oh, I intend on doing. Already bought the model and he's in the first stages of assembly/painting

I'm also planning on using 30k marines as berserkers but painted in their heresy era colours.

I actually am not a fan of the wraith Knights "static" leg pose. If built according to the kit, it's sort of half lunging .... Looks awkward. Thankfully it can be altered, I just wish the arms wee as flexible. For other models.... The new DE lord. Just looks.... Odd. He's standing there with crossed arms very statue like. One would think a DE leader and character would be more dynamic. Like the Lilith model.
