I'm really digging this show so far. The purple man is just an awesome bad guy. The wife and I were talking about his abilities and we came to the conclusion that having that ability would probably just corrupt humans eventually. I think even with good intentions the most well intending people would over time just abuse that power

I am trying to get into it, but I haven't gotten much past halfway through the first episode. So far it seems too grim and disjointed for me.

It is slow and methodical. Much closer to the way Daredevil was paced. Still, Jessica and her friends are pretty stupid at times which is refreshing given the way most hero based stories go.

I enjoyed Daredevil more, but that's not to say Jessica Jones was bad. I certainly consumed it as a show faster than I did Daredevil, but I didn't find it as shocking. The 'oh gak' factor in Daredevil sort of kept escalating, and it made it harder and harder to binge. Jessica Jones has its fair share of them, and some of them more outright shocking, but not quite as many. This made it easier to consume in longer sittings. Overall I just feel that it sort of unravelled a bit at the end. Late season spoilers. Again, not that the show was bad, but in the way that Daredevil sort of built up and up and up and then the ending was entirely rushed because they seemed to have too much material to work with, Jessica Jones just sort of unravelled at the end with some meandering plot lines that really were just there to make up a few more episodes because they didn't have enough material to work with. Still thoroughly enjoyable and worth watching, however. No TV series are without fault.

From what I understand, the Purple Man storyline in the comics involves quite a bit of rape and torture. Is that true for the TV series as well?
Much as I enjoy the thought of David Tennant as the villain, there are some things I just don't want to watch.

Not so much. It's referenced as something that happened previously.

You don't need to worry. Most of the really screwed up stuff doesn't even involve Tennant.

Have to say, so far I'm pretty disappointed (2 episodes in). Admittedly, Daredevil set the bar horrendously high for these series, and this is completely different, but thus far the complete lack of likeable or even interesting characters has not grabbed me. Tennant seems excellent from the brief bit of him I've seen, but unless the rest of the cast develop rather rapidly then he's not enough to carry the show. I may give it another episode or two at some point, but I'm very far from hooked.

It's a good show. But Daredevil is better. Both shows are VERY much not for kids though.

That's something that's killing it for me and making it likely I won't see much more than the first episode. It really doesn't add anything to the plot for me to see people having at it.

as far as the show not being for kids, the original story line was developed in marvels failed R rated comic book line. Its the reason taking it to netflix is a good thing. Although I agree they seemed to focus on the sex scenes far too much, it is not out of character from the original comic books. Purple man was originally a DD villain from the early days, who was brought about since Marvel did not wan the kid friendly villains from current titles used in the Jessica Jones series. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have a big role to play in the marvel universe though, so If this gets them in some way brought into the MCU, I would be all for it.

The sex scenes seemed like their way of pushing the R rating. They didn't have the violence level in this series, as there wasn't as much action and it was more focused on a PI rather than martial artist.
So DD got the R rating for its extreme acts of violence, like Kingpin Car Dooring that guy, while JJ pushed the sex and adult themes more. But yeah, it did feel like it was put in as more of a 'because we can', rather than because it served the story.
Matt is a pretty big womaniser in the comics, yet they got that across with zero sex in his series.

How did DD get an R rating? It's a cable TV series, not a movie. Last I checked, both DD and JJ have a TV- MA rating.

Maybe we should just request that Netflix stops airing whatever Jasper likes, since in his perfect world, we wouldn't have Marvel shows on Netflix.

.
That is perhaps one of my biggest problems with the 3 episodes I watched before pretty much giving up. The violence in Daredevil, while extreme, was actually rather limited; there'd be maybe one or two scraps per episode, and every one of them served to further the story, the characters or the plot. They meant something. JJ seems to just shove those scenes in because they can, and because they've got nothing better to do. It adds nothing, other than to fill up time and disjoint the flow of the episode.
I also found the pacing was just off. Daredevil was 'slow' in the conventional sense, but I was hooked from the end of the first episode. With JJ, it was a case of 'I'll watch another to see if it gets any better', rather than 'I want to find out what happens next'. There was just nothing to grab me.
I am surprised at how uninterested these first few episodes made me, all the trailers looked amazing but it just doesn't have seem to have translated into a show I'm interested in watching.

Finished watching it with my girlfriend last night and we both really liked it.
David Tennant portrayed Kilgrave so well and the writing gave him a lot more than he got in the comics. Jeri was a really nice character too.
There were couple of silly issues (notably when she pulls the fire alarm in the hotel and then enters the room, there's a fire alarm in there that's not going of) and these plot points:

While true, I think it's more accurate to say that Fisk would never even consider coming anywhere close to Kilgrave, and probably would simply put a hit on him purely on principle.

It's been a while, but if I recall correctly, Kingpin's men collided with Kil(l)grave, who then had them kill each other. Kilgrave then goes and tries to control Kingpin, who has too strong a will (something they could easily do with the show), then Kingpin orders Kilgrave to go kill Daredevil, which is only stopped by the other Defenders showing up.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I can't fathom this whole "eww the sexy-tiem is totes ruining this for me" thing; it's a Netflix show, use the little screen-pointer-moving-device-thingy next to your right hand and skip past them if they bother you so much.
I mean come on people, being able to customise your viewing experience is pretty much the whole point of on-demand online media delivery, you don't have to just sit there and take it like TV viewing.
