News broke on Facebook and seems, alas, to be true.

The former GW artist Wayne England passed away earlier.

He was quite key in a lot of early GW work, very influential in many ways.

You can see some of his artwork -- old and more recent -- and his classic ( & gorgeous) Dwarf army from 3rd edition here :

He also produced art for various RPGs and Magic : the Gathering

Condolences to his friends and family.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Just heard from some of my PP buddies, this is a huge loss :(

Always admired his work, he defined Orks and Squigs to me in many respects.

Another crappy loss to the world.

Damn. I'm from the early era white dwarfs and his style was bold and punchy back then. Plus I loved the work he did for avatars of war recently.

Damn shame. :(

When the internet was young and I was 11-12 I used to webcrawl (and later use altavista) on the school computer for warhammer artwork to print on the laser printer. I really fell for some of the black and white pencil work. I later realised that this all was work by Wayne England. He truly had a personal style.

Sad news indeed.

so sad :(
he was one of my artistic heroes for so many years, and the last couple years he always had such nice things to say about my mini painting...
it was amazing to have one of my heroes become a fan of my work...
it really made me feel like i had arrived as a painter...
i enjoyed our correspondences...
gutted that i didn't get a chance to say goodbye to such a great guy...

anyone on Facebook should check out his son Harry's artwork...
he has a very original style, and will carry on the torch with great ability and boatloads of talent...

Sad news, I always liked his later stuff with a distinct Simon Beasley vibe.

As much we make fun of GW for their skull fetish, I think Wayne England drew GW's most distinctive instantly-recognisable iconic skulls.

Really, really sad to hear this news.

He was an incredible artist, so much of the early GW artwork fired my imagination as a kid and helped shape that universe

This was one of the first White Dwarf covers I ever saw, it still looks incredibly cool even today

I almost never post, but I wanted to say that I am devastated. A truly fantastic artist, Wayne England really helped define Warhammer 40k's dark gothic imagery particularly around 3rd edition. His unique style was unmistakable in other games and worlds as well. RIP.

Some big images of his work spoilered below.
