NEW Plastics Coming Soon - GBP09 Late Roman Infantry!
Sculpted by Bob Naismith, 3-Ups painted by Darren Linington
From Lord S's Personal Collection.
Additional notes for clarification (Sat 13.32 Evesham time!)
1. Remember these are 3-ups BUT the 28mm are EXACTLY the same, only smaller (obviously!!) as the mould making process panto-graphs these to cut the moulds.
2. By design, they are fully compatible with our Dark Age Warriors - we have stuck some hybrids together and they look cool. We will post some pics next week.
3. Cavalry next.
ER....Facebook dropped the pics so I have added them again. How strange!

Very very nice painting. Don't have anything very nice to say about the sculpts.

I would be a bigger fan if the chainmail weren't so...oldhammer. Also, those heads are pretty heroic. It would take a Zika virus outbreak to tone them down to WGF levels. Other than that, they look fun to me; they can make a good range of Marvel poses, with clean sculpting and easy conversion potential.. Heroic scale means I would think of them strictly as fantasy troops rather than historicals, but that's better anyway. Automatically Appended Next Post: I feel like painting of that quality on a miniature crosses the line into misrepresentation, though.

These are painted 3-ups, right? I've been after plastic late Romans for ages though so quite likely to grab a box.

The gigantic pics don't do the chainmail any favours... I think it'll look fine at actual size.

Perry Miniatures this is not.
Still: a) SAGA, game finding of the year (only 3 years late ), and b) Arthurian age rocks!

The one on the right makes exactly the same face as one of the Mantic plastic dwarves.
They will probably look fine in 28mm. Could be useful stuff for kitbashing a kingdoms of men army for KoW.

I agree. I think most criticisms of the minis can be put down to you seeing 3-ups in super blow-up size. Would look exactly the same if you saw some of the Perry or Warlord minis in the same way.

To be fair, some of us don't think very highly of Warlord's minis, either. The Perry stuff absolutely looks better in 3-up form, and the comparison only hurts Gripping Beast's latest kit.
I also think the perfectly-painted patterns on the tunic make the rest of the minis look much worse. They are sharper than anyone could reasonably expect to see on a 28mm miniature, which breaks my visual expectations when it comes to the rest of the miniature. It's like putting HD CGI clothing on 8-bit Mario. Automatically Appended Next Post: The realistic and subtle flesh tones don't work on 3-up heroic faces, either. It looks like some Team America marionettes went all Silence of the Lambs with their victims' faces.

I completely agree, which is why my argument that no one ever release blow up pics of their figs still stands. Even Mierce figs have flaws when you're viewing them at 5x size.

Any of Gripping Beast plastics I have are rather nice and are fine painted up.
There are some lovely ranges of Late Romans out there, especially Footsore's, but for those with aversions to metal, they will probably be good value.

I know Warlord's minis are very variable in quality (although most are good at least), but some of the later Bolt Action stuff is cracking.

If those are painted 3-ups (still getting used to that idea) they probably should hire someone who uses an airbrush and/or pigments to paint big historical statues.. because painting them that big as though they were tabletop minis is really really unsmart..

Perry Miniatures 3 UPS:

Couldn't find any quite as big as the GB figures, but the idea that it's all the fault of the 3 up pictures needs to die. These look rougher than the final figures to be sure, but not by much, and nowhere near as rough as what's been shown at the beginning of this thread.

Okay. . Point taken!
Although still think these will turn out to be a nice little kit. Pretty much everything else released by GB has been!
