A colossal statue standing 58 meters (190 ft) tall and weighing over 1,320 tonnes has been unveiled in Jingzhou, China. The incredible statue depicts Guan Yu, a prominent historical figure in Chinese history that was a famous general during the Three Kingdoms period.
The general was later deified in Chinese culture and is reverently referred to as Guan Gong or Guan Di and has come to symbolize brotherhood, integrity, loyalty and righteousness.

The statue was designed by Han Meilin who is known for his designs of the 2008 Beijing Olympics mascots. The legendary figure (48 m tall) stands atop a 10-meter tall pedestal that has been designed to look like an ancient warship. Inside the statue, visitors can explore an 8,000 sq m museum.

In his right hand, Guan Yu is seen holding his famous “Green Dragon Crescent Blade”, an axe-like weapon that weighs over 136 tonnes. Over 4,000 strips of bronze have been glued to the sculpture, which serves as the centrepiece for Jinghzhou’s Guan Yu Park.

That's absolutely brilliant. It looks like a gorgeous mini, except instead of 28mm scale it's 58m scale.

It an impressive sight... and an impressive site too upon reflection.

In some ways I really wish "we" built more stuff like this.

Dire overall as the Schumacher Batman films are/were I did like the design for Gotham city , with all the statutes and interesting architecture -- not the odd neon stuff.

Very impressive and dynamic for such a statue.
Am I the only one who thinks, when Godzilla gets bored with Japan and attacks China, this statue will spring to life to defend the Middle Kingdom?

"Isn't that what I just said?"

And so on...

Seriously, that is a pretty cool statue. Made even cooler to me by the fact that I know who Guan Yu is thanks to playing SMITE.

Technically, yes. But realistically, he was a great leader and warrior of the people who lived here before the eurotrash invasion, and those people are Americans now.

An alternate would be an enormous statue of that highly decorated badass horse from the Korean War.

A friend of mine went to Beijing quite recently and commented that it's essential an architects playground there at the moment, some really wacky (and large scaled) projects that are cropping up all over the place.

If I did go would be sure to see this thing..

That was my thought exactly!

Or in some kind of Ozymandius scenario, where a wasteland wanderer in 7000 years time can just see half of the head emerging from the ground and wonders who he was.

Crazy Horse also wasn't keen on the idea of having a statue made of him and especially not at the expense of sacred land.
