How useful is the Tau one to someone starting from scratch? I'm already getting a couple AoS ones, but I might get a kick out of having a small Tau force.

It's a formation in a box, that saves you a hefty chunk of savings.

Growing out from that box, you could add:
Two Pathfinder units
Two Broadsides
A box of Stealth Suits

From there, you have two formations from the two campaign books(Mont'ka and Kauyon).
Three Pathfinder units and three Broadside units[which can be 1 Broadside each] is a formation that boosts your Pathfinders' cover saves and makes it so Broadsides get double the Markerlight Counters when firing at the Pathfinders' targets and the Broadsides can Overwatch as far as their weapons have range, two Stealth Suit boxes and a Ghostkeel equals an Optimized Stealth Cadre which is...a good formation.

Alternatively, you can do a pair of Start Collecting sets($85 for a box of Crisis Suits, Fire Warriors, and Ethereal on Hover Drone...the Fire Warriors are $50 and the Crisis Suits are $75 themselves) and make a CAD if you want to avoid formations. The Start Collectings also include a formation to boot.

I would like to start an army and I was wondering since I can only afford three boxes. Between ad mech and deathwatch which would make the most since on purchasing two boxes for and if you could explain why?

Three battleforces, or three boxes in general?

I'm sorry about that. I meant three battleforces. Also about how many points is each battle force box. I'm sorry that I'm asking all these questions it's just that I'm still a bit overwhelmed of it all since this is my first foray into wargaming.

Well, if your criteria is "How to get the best bang for your buck"?

Deathwatch, hands down. The Deathwatch Kill-Team kit is incredibly versatile, since it can be combined with the basic Space Marine kits for more flexibility and variety. Add to it that the Deathwatch Bikers and Deathwatch Terminator sets both include the "Deathwatch Upgrade Frame" which is currently unavailable elsewhere(it actually boosts the value of each of those boxes by roughly $13.50 per frame, the price of equivalent Upgrade Frames for the other Space Marine Chapters) and you have more ways to outfit any standard Space Marine stuff you buy.

Points are going to vary wildly based upon how you choose to outfit everything.

Caved and ordered the AM box along with there start collecting set and the IG Enginseer model. There gonna get added to the future projects pile. So I'll probably get to them just in time for the 2nd combined AM codex

I'm disappointed these are only Christmas deals. I would have liked the ad mech and deathwatch ones.

Deathwatch is a good deal but honestly isn't the best stand alone army.

My suggestion is buy the ad mech battleforce and ad mech start collecting set online for 25% off. Find a cheap knight warden kit online. And you have everything you need to field a war convocation list that's competitive fun and fluffy.

Eventually you'll sprinkle the list with other units you like that fit that formation and buy a new 8th ed codex that bound to come out soon.

The Tau and Wolves formations seem rather meh. Ad Mech and especially the Deathwatch ones are quite usable.

Wow, I was not expecting a bonus on the Deathwatch formation anywhere near that. Hit and Run Terminators and Frag Cannon Squads are going to be brutal. Combine it with a Black Spear Strike Force and you have an extremely mean force to field. Heck, a CAD to get some Vanguard Veterans to attach to that Hit and Run Watch Master will be brutal if you give some of them Heavy Thunder Hammers.

The Tau one, given the lion's share of the contents(Ghostkeel, Stealth Suits, Commander Suit) have Relentless by virtue of being Jet Pack units, seems at first glance to be the dud of the group...but it does make Pathfinders and Broadsides a bit more interesting at least. Broadsides lack Relentless natively so that formation bonus is nice for them. The Tau one would be much nicer if the TY7 Devilfish wasn't required(not sure why it is its own unit rather than the DT for the Pathfinders) and if you could take units of Broadsides instead of a single one.

Wolves one is pretty good too, since there's no range requirement.

How is the Tau one bad? Extra 6" move for free is not a bad thing. Perhaps not as good as other ways to take those units (OSC for instance) but fast = good

Look at the contents of the box.
1x Ghostkeel
1x Broadside
1x Commander
1x Stealth Suit Squad
1x Pathfinder Squad
1x TY7 Devilfish
Whatever Drones you decide to have accompanying the units

Out of all of those items, only two of them lack the ability to move and fire Heavy weapons with no penalty. Broadsides and Pathfinders.
Everything else has Relentless by virtue of being Jetpack Infantry(or Jetpack Monstrous Creature for the Ghostkeel) or a Vehicle(TY7 Devilfish).
Beyond that, the Pathfinders and Broadside are realistically going to be the only item you take a Heavy weapon on that you don't want to Snap-Shoot with.

Again, it's not bad...it's just a formation bonus that seems to be a bit weird. It seems almost like it might be future proofing things(I could see Relentless being removed as a USR for Monstrous Creatures and Jetpack units for example) for a new edition...or it was just written by someone who hadn't ever read the Tau codex.

If the box had contained a couple of squads of Fire Warriors? This formation would be a hell of a lot more intriguing IMO.

I said its meh and the Hunter Cadre already has something similar with the Run and Shoot ability. Add in 3 units of Firewarriors and the formation becomes a valid cadre but you also get a ton of extra flexibility in what else you take. Also the formation specifically says 1 (model name here) instead of 1 unit of (model name) so you can only use a single model units except for the pathfinders which is a unit.

Hit & Run Razorbacks are what this game needs!

Pretty good rules though. Having Hit & Run on everything sounds like fun. For you. Nightmare for your opponent.

I agree with the assessment. However you still lose all those killteam formation benefits for that hit an run.

There is definitely a tradeoff, for sure. You could always use unattached Kill Teams rather than the whole Black Spear Strike Force. An Aquila Kill Team with Vanguard Veterans attached is probably going to be a much cheaper option in terms of points.

Vehicles have Hit and Run by default, since they can't be locked in combat unless they are a walker (or Superheavy Walker for stupid reasons)

I like the Deathwatch and AdMech formations- AdMech has the units I was planning to build from the box, and the Deathwatch one I find hilarious that it is called Unceasing Assault, and the rule lets you end an assault and get clear.

Hit and Run on the Razorback does give you free movement, though, which is nice.

Just had an email from The Outpost informing me that GW have not provided them with any Sylvaneth battleforces, apparently other independent stores are in the same boat.

The Sylvaneth battleforce is sold out in the online store. Alarielle is sold out again too. You would think they would know by now that the Sylvaneth are pretty popular.

I'm gonna be piiiissed if they don't reconsider to launch this Battleforces again. I just got the money today to buy the Sylvaneth one and... yeah, figure it out...

I mean, really, why even brand the boxes and respective formations names if they will only last a week?

On a little off-topic, Space Hulk once again is sold out.

I wonder if they only made them available to US FLGS because of their lack of penetration in the US storewise. Haven't recieved any emails yet from my purchaser stating it's unavailable to them so we'll have to see what happens.

Throwing out that one of my local flgs got a copy of all the Battleforces and there is a gw in town so I think the us might be allocating differently
