Why only 4 for AoS and 40k? I don't see why they couldnt do more. Special box formation rules are hard to write? Hrm.

Discounting your bestselling items is actually pro consumer. The strategy most companies have is discounting the poor sellers. Obviously thats not much consolation to dark eldar fans. The only way this makes sense is if it is the beginning of a broader range. If gw can end up with a start collecting and a battleforce for each army it will be very good.

Does the Ad Mech box contain units from two different codexes? Is that an indication that they might be releasing a combined codex for them soon?

Yes it does.
But as did the Start Collecting!...
So that's not a clue.

Another thing that occurs is that these are all recentish releases, meaning the box sets will stay up to date for a while. It is another hint that we will see more of these sets in the future. Why release a dark Angels set if you are going to have new minis next year? That is also good for the customer. A familiar trick is putting an item on sale, just before replacing it with a new one. This is not the case here.

The other main discounting strategy is to increase basket size. If these double retail spend for very little extra materials cost, bingo, happy GW.

Shelf space would be my guess, and retailers are already going to be flipping out over having to order 8 different new starter set sized boxes on top of Prospero 2 and BB coming out at the same time.

That's really not a great reason to not release a Dark Angels set of some kind - they currently have neither a Start Collecting set nor one of these new bundles. If these new bundles are all made up of current models, then why not release one?

I'm totally sold on the Sylvaneth one. I'D do two if it didn't come with a unique character. Assuming the contents are right it's like getting a treelord and 2 boxes of revenant for free. This and 2 start collecting and you've got a great sylvaneth army that's well over tournament standard with a fair amount of the entire range except for Alarielle. You're talking less than $300 after retailer discount for all of that.

Limiting the number of big boxes might help with focusing production to a limited set of sprues. Flood the market with these kits and then demand for those kits will be sated and then they can move on to different releases. Also worth noting that these boxes are for armies that had relatively recent releases and don't seem likely to have a new release in the near future. The SW choice in particular is probably a very calculated move due to the very strong possibility that Fenris part 2 will be coming out in the next month.

Echoing the thought on the Ironjawz box. It's unclear what I'm supposed to do with the Giant. Unless the box comes with a new Warscroll that gives Giants the Ironjawz Keyword, it's not a model that can be easily included in an Ironjawz army... assuming Matched Play, which is a fair assumption at this point.

To include a Giant at 2000 points, you'd first need to include a minimum of 300 points of generic Destruction Battleline units.

Just doesn't seem worth it. What an odd choice. I'm assuming we'll have in box Battalions that DON'T receive Matched Play points just like the Start Collecting boxes.

The Ironjawz one is only strange because the Giant makes everything in the army not battleline. It's a solid discount ($305 retail) but is actually a bad game box (the only one) to add onto the start collecting and not make a perfect playable general compendium force.

Kriswallow beat me to it.

Any price reductions are greatly accepted, tempted with the Ad Mech set, hoping they bring out some more and then I'll once again be on a GW spending spree

Yes it will be interesting to see if any of the battalions have points, since this is post-GHB (SC boxes make sense to not have points as they are small and meant for starting out). But I am certain we will get another 2/3 playstyles supported approach and they will NOT have points, just to reinforce the idea that Matched Play is clearly an afterthought (well, the version that requires Battleline; remember there's a Matched Play variant that says ignore Battleline, just pick to the points; why that one isn't the actual default I do not know, maybe because it's in a small sidebar).

In fact, I propose that's how we deal with it. Insist the "Points Only" variant of Matched Play is used as the default. Sort of an organized protest thing (I demand credit as well as the mastermind).

It's worth noting that by combining this box, and the start collecting! admech box, you're a knight short of a WarConvocation.

That's... tempting. If only I had more information on Magnus, because I also want to buy in to that.

Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.

I have a problem.

Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

it's almost as if they KNOW what people are building up to... crazy, right? Also most of the contents are dual kits except the Kastelan. So you really WANT to get 2 boxes anyway.
It's almost devilish. And I've only got 1 start collecting, 1 Chicken, 2 kataphrons and a skitarii box.
So adding more kataphron bodies to the unit while getting more walkers and the rest for the war convo... It's almost a guaranteed sell x2 for those that didn't buy their admech in advance.

As previously noted by someone earlier, give me the option of a combined Ad Mech codex and I'd probably be in for a Big Box and Start Collecting set (likely x2 for the latter).

I just bought a Celestant Prime two days ago...

I don't need more Liberators, but I would have loved to have an Azyros and more Dracoth Riders (Fulminators are +) at a cheaper price. Maybe I'll try to return it...

The other sets are really good too. What's the USD price? $150?

Added pics of AOS stuff to first post. The Stormcast set also has 5 Paladins. That set is £208 when bought seperately. The Khorne set is exactly the same as before but £25 cheaper.

Double start collecting so $170.

Its a really weird thing to put Drycha in the sylvaneth box.
Its a uniqe charachter that lots of people already own.
So, they make the box awkvard for people that already have Drycha, and probably kill alot of individual sales for the drycha box when the second hand market for her is flooded with left over "battleforce drycha".

It seems like these boxes are intended to be easy sequels to the start collecting boxes - ie focused on players who are ready to move into larger games from their smaller forces rather than players who already have a bunch of models and are just in it for the value.

I don't have any Sylvaneth models, but I've wanted them for a while. Together with the Start Collecting box, it might push me over into starting yet another faction I'll never get around to painting.

Yeah, the double Drycha will keep me to probably one box of these. That said even with her I'd still be saving on essentially the value of 2 boxes of Tree-Revenants.

But yeah, Drycha is going to be easy to find on Ebay after the holiday season which is fine.

Still stoked that you can easily do 1500-1760 without battalions for just $255. Add another getting started (or holiday bundle depending on your preferred battleline) and you're looking at 2200-2500 depending on which one you pick up.

I'm definitely picking one up as it's got all the models I want some of but couldn't justify at singular or even discounted pricing. Since we're looking at around 50% off after online discount it's now completely worth it.
