I'd agree that whilst Moss is very much a comedy favourite, Richard Ayoade has pretty much only played a variation on that template.

Me, I prefer left-field relatively unknown actors to take over as The Doctor. As a role, it offers lots of opportunity to mix up the subtext and vary his personality, if not his goals. So a good Doctor to me is one we didn't see coming.

And with Missy, the producers can pick from anyone, which seems interesting and encouraging.

I guess it all depends on where the new Show Runner wants to take the series. Much as I've enjoyed Moffat's run (I really don't get the antipathy towards him), I'd like to see more moral quandaries for the Doctor - he's been a bit too 'oh sod it, it's probably for the best' since the revival.

Here's a much and rightly loved scene, showing Doctor Who at it's absolute finest to explain what I mean...

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

His comedy roles all seem to me to be variations on a theme.

Only if she could play Who as M. A semi-sinister Who would be kind of cool.

As long as 'psychic paper' remains a thing of the past. Worst. Invention. Ever.

The Doctor doesn't need it. He's The Doctor. He's known well and known long that provided you walk about like you're supposed to be there, and are actually in charge you'll get away with it!

Psychic Paper undermined the Doctor's brilliance.

Guys guys guys... you're overlooking the replacement Doctor that the show has already told us comes after Capaldi (at some point)

TOM BAKER!

Remember the 50th anniversary episode? The Doctor is shown to regenerate into Tom Baker at some point in the future. So, why not now? He's getting on in years, and if we're gonna make it happen it needs to be sooner rather than later.

Alternatively, now that Disney has managed to bring Pete Cushing back from the dead, maybe the BBC can ask to borrow/rent him for a few seasons. Doesn't he deserve a second bite at the apple? I'd love to see what Zombie Pete Cushing would do with the roll, especially since he would have more freedom to develop his own interpretation of the character than he did when he made those horrible, horrible movies. And you can't say he's too old for the role now that Capaldi has made it okay for older actors to play the Doctor, again!

And you can't say he's too dead for the role now that Rogue One has made it okay for deceased actors to play in movies.

This is surprisingly persuasive. The question is, does dead Peter Cushing cost more than a new living actor?

Hugh Laurie's name was floating around last time as well. Not sure it's actually based on anything, but would be EPIC.

The Master's personality has changed significantly over the decades. Modern-era Master was totally different to Classic Master.

And Missy was pretty fantastic.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

((It took me ten minutes to type this, as Insaniak's new avatar had me in stitches ))

I could get behind Atwell in the role. If they're moving on from Capaldi they'll probably avoid another older Doctor, so Laurie is probably a non-starter. TBH though I'd rather they go with someone nobody expects.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

Conviction got cancelled before the season even finished as far as I saw...

It was put in the same time-slot as "Castle" had been (10am Mondays on ABC here in the US), but that doesn't really work out too great except in some weird circumstances.

Time for an American Doctor!

No great loss on Capaldi I wasn't impressed though the scripts and companion had a lot to do with that.

And can we have a companion who's not from 21st C England?

And not a 20-something girl?

I liked Donna just because she wasn't as samey as Rose and Amy and wassername and the other one.

I'd love a future space pilot or a caveman or something...

With all of time and space I think they can find someone more interesting.

From vague memory, they were mostly in the later half of the original series.
Recently, there's been Cpt Jack, but not many others.

Non-human or non-20th century companions?

Victoria, Jamie, Susan of course (who was Gallifreyan), Romana (1 and 2), Kameleon (still not a worse assistant than....) Adric, Nyssa, Turlough (5th Doctor had the best range of assistants really).

So there's definitely precedent, and we need more. Enough trying to make it hip and down and rap with the kids. Gimme silly sci-fi and curiously hard hitting moral quandaries. And consign Psychic Paper to the dustbin.
