State Department was 'unaware' of Mexico visit

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-39233539

Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray met senior White House aides without the State Department's knowledge, according to an official.

State Department acting spokesman Mark Toner said he was "unaware" the foreign minister was in Washington.

The secretary of state typically receives foreign diplomats during visits to the nation's capital.

The disconnect comes amid reports that the State Department has been sidelined in matters of foreign policy.

...

This would be...very odd, but it appears that Trump has dumped anyone related to the Obama administration from the state department without replacements or transition plans, with lots of empty roles and management issues. If true, lets hope it doesn't leave the US State Dept like the 1939 Red Army...

Yes, but it won't help you to get into a Tier 1 school.

Have to disagree. Went to a community college, didn't wait to get the associates, but transferred to a Tier 1 school after 45 hours. The only trick was making sure that the courses I chose to take at a community college would transfer and getting good grades.

In fact, it sometimes is easier transferring in as a sophomore or Junior into a Tier 1, e.g. UT and Texas A&M, from a community college as by that time, there are more spots open as a result of the students who were admitted straight out of High School dropping out, transferring, or changing majors. Also, I have been told repeatedly that from an admissions perspective, that JC's transfers are seen as a lower risk than Freshmen as they have already established and demonstrated their ability at the college level.

Going through the process now with my high school age daughter, and the community college for lower division courses before transferring to her 4 yr school of choice is looking even more appealing now than when I did it because of the cost factor. In Texas the difference between your first two years at UT and a community college almost half and if considering a private or out of state school, the cost savings can be staggering.

Tuition (not room and board, just tuition) was going to be $60K for four years. Take If she takes the first two years at community college, it drops to $25K.

I firmly believe the government interference in the student loan market has significantly contributed to the inflation in secondary education and the student loan bubble because it made such loans much easier to get. When the schools figured out how easy the government was making it for students to get student loans, tuitions skyrocketed. It was particular appalling to me that individuals were able to get loans for degrees for which the well-established median incomes unequivocally showed that they stood very little chance of earning a salary that would allow them to pay back the loans.

Yes, student loans are hard to means test in the same way you do a car loan or home loan. But the BLS and their corresponding state counterparts know what the average salary is and how many job openings there in a given field to give any perspective student and their lender enough information to assess whether or not that degree in gender studies is likely to lead to the type of job that can afford the loan payments required to pay back the student loan in a reasonable time frame.

Now, in addition to the finanical strain on individuals, the taxpayers like me are having to foot the bill for bailouts, writeoffs, and incresed federal and state funding to higher ed for this irresponsible borrowing and lending.

Did you transfer to UT Austin? I would not consider Aggieville, UT Dallas, UT SA, UH, Baylor or UTEP to be Tier 1.

Texas has a number of Tier 1 colleges, including Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, the University of Houston, and both UTAs as evaluated by the Carnegie system: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_research_universities_in_the_United_States

The US News and World Reports rankings include Rice in their Top 20 (UT didn't make the cut), but I am not a big fan of their system, as approximately 20% is a soft score based on opinion polling of the universities.

Really, most accredited universities should be fine and a lot of it just boils down to old fashioned name snobbery (though some universities do have unique strengths- Texas A&M has an excellent veterinary program, for example). Once you are in your profession, experience and drive soon trumps alma matter anyway.

I went to UH. In no way would I consider it a tier 1 school. A Tier 1 school is a leading research unviersity (at least in my view). Thats UT Austin and Rice, and to a much lesser extent Aggieville.

Not much different than what just happened with the DOJ. Sure, pretty much all the US Attorneys leave under a new administration, but there's still a transition time, and they don't find out about their forced resignations from the news media before they hear it from the Attorney General.

Hrm, that's the spin they've been going with, but it doesn't appear to be what really happened, though it's a good way of drumming up legal defense funds apparently.

Here's the actual USDA report.

https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/wcm/connect/de6887ab-620b-4edb-abbe-7fd88c8a4c4a/M1816-NOIE-081616.pdf?MOD=AJPERES

This action is based on your establishment's failure to effectively implement humane methods of slaughtering and handling of animals in a manner that complies with the regulatory requirements prescribed by the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) and Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA).

Essentially they were caught inhumanely slaughtering an animal outside of proper procedures. No mention of anything related to any speech issues.

They also were not shut down, but given the option to present a remediation plan, failing which they *could* be shut down.

Do you have a better source for this? It's obviously a problem if it's true, but the source is a blatantly partisan article on a really partisan site, and the linked USDA policy statement appears to be about its own employees and have nothing to do with the farms they're inspecting. So I have a feeling something is being exaggerated or omitted in this version of the story.

The context would appear to be that while people are correct that it is normal that attorneys are fired when the new administration came in.

The difference is, this time, he was asked to stay on, did so... Then was fired out of the blue.

Preeht Bharara? He was actually specifically asked by Trump to stay on, and now is getting kicked out. I guess they don't want a man who has been known to get powerful corrupt officials sent to jail in power, I wonder why?

I have to say, mentioning loans a few pages back.
Student loans are quite frankly something that needs to be changed. Defaulting should be a thing. I have loans with no way to make the payment, I just had to get a special concultant to help me filing paper work to get me a consolidation and away from a company that is trying to get me to defer my loans(ever week my bill came saying if I cant pay, i can file for a deferment) but I know that is worse because it allows them to compound interest.
This whole situation has caused me so much Anxiety and fear that gets worse because I know no help is coming because of the republicans of office. Not to mention if this health bill passes, im out of insurance as is my mother.

student loans are a bitch, I'm so glad I finally got mine out of the way, I've got friends that will be paying theirs off well into their 40's. Medical bills are a whole other beast, and are the cause of bankruptcy in almost half of all cases. These things have bloated completely out of control, and there's not much out of the Republicans at all on such issues, and most of their proposals would only worsen these issues, usually to the benefit of the very wealthy.

A friend of mine, on disability, would be $130k in debt just from medical bills accrued since Jan 1 if the Medicaid expansion wasn't there. How anyone thinks that's something people can deal with is beyond me.

In case anyone had any doubts that Bannon is shady as fething anything and there's no way in hell he should be in the whitehouse.

Tucked away amongst the dubious tax dealings and criminal associations...

On Feb. 18, 2015, Bannon ended the water and sewer service at Opechee Drive and switched the service to Onaway Drive, less than a half mile away in Coconut Grove, records show. Five days later, Bannon changed his voter registration to Onaway Drive.

The Opechee house was left in disrepair, according to an email between the landlord and Bannon and interviews with the landlord.

Padlocks had been placed on interior doors — or the doors had been removed altogether. A hot tub was destroyed.

“[E]ntire Jacuzzi bathtub seems to have been covered in acid,” the landlord wrote in the February 2015 email to Bannon.

“I’m out of town,” Bannon replied. “is there any way you can talk with Diane and sort things out ???”

The damage was estimated at more than $14,000, according to an accounting by the landlords, who kept the $9,800 security deposit from Bannon and Clohesy.

The man goes after D's and R's alike, and has done a hell of a lot more "swamp draining" than Trump.. And Trump dropped him because he'd go after Trump's wrongdoings. .

And do you have a source for Schumer asking Trump to keep him on, or is this more spin?

Yup. Preet was Chief Counsel to Schumer. He's Chuckie's boy.

Again, you obviously don't pay attention to NY State politics. He's nobody's "boy". He has been very consistent in going after both R's and D's.
I can't blame you, NYS politics are a shitshow, but he's been a thorn in the side of both parties (and good thing, maybe we'll actually be able to get some gak done with out all the corruption).

...and this story of where Prezzie-Elect reached out to Chuckie.

Did you read that article? It says that that Trump reached out to Schumer to ask for advice, not Schumer asking Trump to keep Bharara one.

Then Chuckie went on to be the "stick in the mud" at the Senate.

Yup... this is more of an vindictive act imo, rather than "oh gak, Preet's go'ing to take our ass down".

I'll fully agree that it could be "Grr, those damn Democrats", but considering how much of a Nixonian direction things have been going, I'm wary.

I'm wary both ways. Going for a single-party state is just as bad as Nixonian shenanigans.
