You had to bring up hobos didn’t you . Our last house had train tracks directly across the street from our front door. Our real estate person tried to get us to buyANY other house because of the tracks specifically because she’s afraid of Hobbos . Never saw any in the 7 years we lived there.

Would you say that estate agent was "Hobophobic"?

I loved that Battleof Maccragge train they did years ago. Would like to see an updated version if you tackle the project Joe.

Okay, need to start some planning. What color ground should I do around the train wreck? As it will match my board I’m going to do. I was thinking brown/red dirt, but also considering grey rocky/quarry look.

Somewhere out there is a 1/72 scale mini of Boxcar Willie. Mentioned in case you need a hobo for the trainwreck.

No idea about Hobo zombies...

Looks like a fun summer project. Osprey has some interesting games these days.

Not sure I need zombie hobos, but one of the missions in the book is ‘zombie bash’ which requires 10-20 zombies per team playing.

Well.... this is what my work area has become....

I need a maid. Or need to focus better.

But that doesn’t stop the purchases
Was wandering HobbyLobby the other day and found this....hackiesack I guess, because who would just have balls of fake plants on their counters? $4.99 before the 40% off coupon.

When you start pulling it apart it’s made of these 4twig parts

Which cut down make for some nice little scrub bushes.

Now to treat it like a tootsie pop and see how many there are till I find the center . I’ll post later what the grand total is.

Edit : it’s technically later....so 61 little 4 sprout stems, a couple were missing one on the stems, so about 240 little scrub bushes for $3 and tax . Oh and the center of the thing looks useful too...

Looks great as an obstacle for Gaslands

Edit2: so I had a package sitting on the counter for me for a few days. Didn’t even look at it since I hadn’t ordered anything and the replacement part I needed from Warlordgames was tiny (about the size of a space marine torso, a real marine not the Numarines ). But it was an overly packed box from Warlordgames with not only the missing part, a drum of x-launcher(think sci-fi mortar shells), but seven...yes 7 full x-launchers . Now that means I now have 8 x-launchers and only 7 drums of ammo, but I’m not complaining as the x-launcher teams (3 guys, the mortar and the ammo drum and a drone) run £12 each. I have plenty of drones and I can use basic troopers to fill in for the gunners, so I could have 8 teams of mortars now . I think I’ll actually use a few of the launchers as turrets for Gaslands and probably use the ammo drums to be rocket pods or mines .

Thanks Warlordgames ,

Also to note when I sent them the message about missing the part I did not mention that I am one of the MODs on their forum. I will follow up my email to them making sure it wasn’t a mistake sending me this stuff. I figure it’s probably all off of one pull in the mold and was just easier to send it all and get a little hobby Karma from your customer.

Happy to help. Love The Prphecy avatar BTW.

Really good cars for Gaslands are the hot wheels star wars, especially the Rebel ships. The X-wing is a Dune bug with little gatling guns, absolutely perfect.

If you really want to go to town, though, look at KORE Thinking. Their current stuff (and their new KS) is off the chart.
Lastly, although it's another game, Wreck and Ruin is on the same scale, a bit more self contained (KS ends in 5 days I think) but a neat thing is the models have peg slots for flame tokens

Thanks, I've always had a Walken avatar, this one is just the coolest so Far!

Those look interesting, but I don't think I can justify the cost when Hot Wheels are $0.96!
Weapons packs might be cool though.

I’m with Slavetodorkness on the cost per car, but some of the Star Wars ones were very tempting. I like the peg holes for flames, but as the cards in Gaslands have check off for damage I think it will be easier to track that way. Besides I have a feeling I’ll be making some explosion and flame templates here soon enough .

Glad you like the game and little dorkness is interested too, or did I misread it and it’s too he’s wife who can’t stop talking about it? If so then double score .

Well I need a stress relief project (reason spoilered below), so it’s table time.

The back side of my 3’x5’ grass table, currently being inspected by our 1year old kitten Tallulah , yes she is THAT stinking cute.
Im using a technique from Mel the terrain tutor , one of my favorite gaming youtubers.

Basically watered down drywall filler for the first coat so the water gets absorbed into the MDF and it bonds better. Then you wait for that layer to dry and then you stiple on the filler using a nylon brush making sure not to leave any clumps.

Really hard to see the effect since it’s still wet and all white reflecting the light, but we will see how it turns out after it dries and I can paint it using cheap Walmart craft paint and then highlighting by drybrushing it.

I’m using the 3x5 table for Gaslands as I had it already for my sons Christmas tree train table base. Now the table will be a train wreck table most of the time. It also fits perfect on our old kitchen table which has been moved to the basement for an arts and crafts table.

Also while getting everything ready I stumbled across something I thought got thrown out.

Fine gauge metal mesh that I used on the back of the prison car. I’d been looking around for it, but it was hiding better than that stupid Mantis Marine I was painting for Gits competition way back and it got lost hiding amongst terrain that got put away for like 4 months .

Spoiler time
Spoiler:
So life is happening...well not life so much. Anyone who’s been reading my stuff for a while may recall me mentioning my mom having emergency surgery over 2.5 years ago where they removed her stomach after it ruptured. While waiting for that surgery to finish, my dad was rushed into his own surgery for his kidneys as they had ceased functioning and the doctor noticed it while telling us about moms chances. Both survived the surgeries, mom is actually in the best health of my life (44years next week), but dad has been on a slow decline as the doctor gave him 3years max after surgery. His Sister, my aunt passed away about a month ago and since then dads gradual decline has just plummeted. Twice we have been on the brink of having his right leg amputated as the dialysis has hardened up two of the three veins that go to his foot and no circulation is getting past the ankle. Constant infections and antibiotics have caused dramatic mental decline. Dad has been given permission to switch to hospice as he has full fledged Dimentia now, which means he can stop Dialysis anytime and the doctor says in his condition he would only last 3 days maximum. I spent the day with him at his hospital yesterday and it was worse than all the other visits with him now in a waking sleep, sleep eating the food he is dreaming about. He was doing all the hand motions of pulling leaves of lettuce of the head and putting it to his mouth and chewing all while being completely asleep but with his eyes wide open.

Luckily when all the surgeries transpired we got medical power of attorney established and got his wishes documented with the lawyers and social workers on what extent of life support and when to “pull the plug”.

IF YOU HAVEN’T TAKEN THE TIME TO TALK TO YOUR PARENTS, SPOUSES OR LOVED ONES ABOUT WHAT MEASURES THEY WANT TAKEN IF SOMETHING STUPID LIKE THIS HAPPENS, THE WALK AWAY FROM THE SCREEN NOW AND CALL THEM. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. ITS ONLY BECAUSE WE GOT THIS TAKEN CARE OF ALMOST3 YEARS AGO THAT THERE IS ANY PEACE OF MIND. rant ended.

Anyway, my stress level over the last few months has been way too high, so I have taken a leave of absence from work to spend these last day s with dad. What you see above is about 2 hours of work squeezed in when I’m supposed to be sleeping but cannot.

Oh, damn, that sucks, Theo. I've lost two grandparents to Alzheimer's and all I can say is focus on the good times. I'll pray for you and him.

The board looks good so far. I'm actually thinking about one too. I've seen a technique similar in ceiling texture where you thickly stipple the mud on then sand the top layer flat. Kinda looks like a dry riverbed but is fairly even for models to sit on.

Little Dorkness is the chatterbox btw. The Mrs. Thinks it's ok but probably will like it better when she's not playing already tired. We got started a bit late and went until 11 pm. She was kinda glad when her car exploded...lol

Thanks Slavetodorkness ,
Spoiler:
prayers always appreciated, just glad Dad isn’t afraid and knows God.

Glad the little one is enjoying it, it isn’t to difficult, though we are still working out a few rules.

Well progress is measured in pictures today.
Base paint color started in the corner, rich deep brown.

Drybrushed outwards over the white just so you could get an idea of the texture that was accomplished. It is basically flat, not enough height difference to cause wobble effect. Finished color will be mostly the dark brown with lighter orange/brown highlights. Full brown coat is now on and drying.

Hey Theo, I picked this game up a few months back as well and grabbed some templates and dice from a US-based Etsy shop (flying the Friends of Gaslands flag of course!). So far, I've only played a single game with my 14 year old son, but we both enjoyed it immensely! That hasnt stopped me from grabbing a few hotwheels every time I walk down the toy isle in Target...I've amassed quite a few more than I will probably end up using...

Great work on the cars and I'm loving the crashed train scenery! May I ask what you are using for race gates? I'm looking for ideas myself...

Keep up the great work!

Edit: I just read about your dad, and man, that just sucks... I hope that things go peacefully for him and that you and the rest of your family are doing ok. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks Fango . I appreciate the thoughts.

Gaslands is great and addictive, even those $0.94 add up at walmart . I haven’t made official Gates yet, but I’m thinking of using Mantic Battlezone half tiles stuck together with bits on the ends to make them the correct size. I should work on them soon, finishing the table first. I’ll post pics here soon.

Table is looking good, Theo- I'm in need of a display base to take pictures of things on so all y'all can stop admiring my kitchen counters. You're giving me some great ideas to work with on a smaller scale project to start- but eventually I'm going to need a good set of battle boards myself!

Spoiler:
Very sorry to hear what you're going through, and our prayers (me and the missus) have you and your family in them by name. The fact that we all have an end to us doesn't make dealing with it any easier. You're absolutely right about many things you've mentioned: we should talk with our loved ones NOW, have the difficult conversation when times are good, so everyone is prepared and there is no speculation as to what our loved ones wanted; be unafraid in the face of difficulties because we know, love and fear our Maker; take time for the little things as well as make time for the big things.

I'm liking the Gaslands stuff, and I look forward to seeing how that board turns out. Lucky finds with all those old toy train cars to use; they'll make very thematic post-apocalyptic obstacles.

Also, I'm very sorry to hear about your dad. Losing any relative is tough, especially if there's mental decline as well. Just remember the good times, and comfort yourself that he's going to a better place. Prayers for you and your family in this hard time.

The idea for this came straight from a Terrain Tutor display board video. Very easy. Though I botched the drybrush and had to rebasecoat the board. He did his as a 2x2 board.

ZergSmasher wrote:I'm liking the Gaslands stuff, and I look forward to seeing how that board turns out.

I’m lucky to have a train store the next street over, and he buys old sets and anything he cannot fix goes cheap .

monkeytroll wrote:All this talk makes me want to go grab some hotwheels and cut them up. You're a bad influence, all of you

Nice cheap way to base the table, that should look excellent for dirty, dusty, gun-toting races.

And sorry to hear that man, thoughts are with you and yours.

Hot wheels are soooooo much cheaper than anything GW related. You can even splurge and buy fancy ones for less than most character models .

Good find in the plant-ball-thing.
Good thoughts on the table.

Bad news. All the best.

Thanks Dr. H, I hope the plant ball terrain pieces work out. Such a great way to get loads of scatter for cheap.

I can see how easily this gaslands addicts people. I don't have anyone to play against me though, so I may have some immunity here. My gaming group is going all in on board games and RPGs for now. Ah well.

Show it to the gaming group. I’m sure they will fall into it. It has really blown up. I’ve been watching miniaturemarkets daily page which shows what they get in every day and how many. Over the last two weeks they have gotten about 40 of the rulebooks in. That’s a good sign for popularity.

I needed to get grape jelly, that's why I went to Walmart today....the toy aisle just happens to be on the way to the jelly aisle...if I come in from the car service department... I just bought five more cars, man. Fives much better than the ten I bought this last weekend.... Don't judge me man...they were perfect for Gaslands! I practically HAD to get them.

Damn, I'm out of peanut butter! Where's my car keys?

Right next to the rulebook, might as well double check the rulebook to see what you have and what might be useful if it happens to fall into your basket.

Technolog is Russian for Mantic.

Considering that you now have 15 cars, it should be easy enough to find one of the sets.

And if not just strap the cars to your shoes and get some exercise roller skating to walmart

So. Been busy with dad. He has not given up on Dialysis, but it’s not helping, not even keeping him level anymore. But until he decides otherwise, we carry on.

I botched the drybrushing of the board and had to repaint it.

I’ll try a different method tomorrow, and a much lighter highlight for contrast.
I didn’t like all black for my Rutherford team, so I’m repainting with more of a desert theme. Plus new vehicles. Guns to be added after basecoated on the rest of the models.

The one with the tarp is cool because the tarp comes off.

I think it will Cary the 125mm cannon on the back

One nice thing about going to see dad I see that Miniaturemarket’s new retail store is on the way home. I picked up a deal of the day from wed/Thursday: Super Dungeon Explorer super ninja ambush for $10.

I don’t play that game and not really a fan of Chibi figs, but it comes with two of the same Oni which I thought could work in Test of Honour...They are big...actually BIG is an understatement. They are HUGE.

I was hoping the four lanterns which one of them in the above picture could work in the game a small well. I guess I’ll figure something else out with them.

While in the store I picked up a store special Robotech RPG Tactics (missed the cluster of a Kickstarter due to funds thank God), but they have over 1000 of the core boxes online for $45. In store they are $30(limit one per person) I grabbed one because I want the dice, and at less than a $1 per model I’ll eventually suffer through building them. I might grab a couple more boxes over the coming weeks . It’s like Sedition Wars part 2.

I was a huge Robotech fan growing up. Watched the show as soon as I got off the school bus everyday. I still have 3 of my transformer Jetfire(Rick Hunter Valkyries), I had 5 at one point. I also have a Scott Bernard Alpha Fighter that’s Metal, but one of the wings is busted. I know people are pissed off about getting ripped on the game, but I look forward to creating fighter wings and masses of Battlepods.

So I was assembling some of the Robotech figs today... started with the Zentradi...no pictures right now. They were decent to put together, but some parts were so fiddley that they broke coming off the sprue .

I was struck by inspiration while making them. I think I have a unique idea of how to paint them.
Spoiler:

They will be yellow like Despicable Me Minions

Wish me luck it’s the one center eye I’m sure of it . I think the leader will have to be Gru. I hope I don’t paint the Veritechs purple and give them fuzzy hair.

Mostly, on my phone.

Sounds like a lot of fun. A while back someone did tau in that scheme on here, I forget who, and gitsplitta is thinking of minion killakans. Despicable inspiration indeed!

I’ll have to go dig that up just to get inspiration. Not sure that I’ll actually do it, but as all the pods have single “eyes” which could easily get silver trim it is hard not to consider it.

Anyway. Little progress is still some progress.
3gaslands Gates done.

Each uses 3 Mantic building 1/2wide pieces for overall length and then some struts upwards to make the space between almost perfect for the actual gate size. Maybe 1mm too narrow, but good enough for government work.

2 more boxcar terrain pieces.

And lastly a stacked piece. It used to have a searchlight mounted on it, but I think a big gun might make its home up on the perch. I think I might have special rules for this terrain piece where extra victory points are given for threading the needle between the cars and under the bridge.

Have a doctors appointment for myself today, dealing with family stuff is taking it’s toll and I need some preventative measures to keep me sane. Seeing everyone here on Dakkadakka is going through some hell right now helps me remember it’s not shameful to ask for some help.
