So are you getting an Ender 3? Or another variety of printer? Either way it’s great fun...until you run out of filament like me .
Anyway, with no filament crack to sustain me I decided to assemble the rest of the paint rack I got printed out. This thing is a bugger to assemble as the parts keep going whichever way they want. I noticed the designer created an adjustment which makes them sag less. So I may wind up reprinting them later. Especially since it’s almost full as is.
I took all my GW paints off the table and have been looking for a better storage rack for them as the five bamboo spice racks I had were overflowing and unorganized.
That’s an 11”x17” paper box lid they are all in and half of it is double stacked. I may have too many paints . This is just the newer lid types too. I have boxes which have the older style flip lids also. While I dislike dropper bottles, I paint straight from the pot, if you don’t like it then come paint my models for me. I am definitely seeing the advantage of the dropper bottle rack design and space savings. I might just have to switch over all these bottles . That’s a lot of work to be done.
I did find one style of GW paint rack design to try and print, but I still don’t think it will save enough space overall.

Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!

So Ive been away for a bit. Working too much etc. but I finally got caight up on your blog this evening. The 3d printing stuff is great and is tempting me to jump in as Ive been considering for awhile.
We play A LOT of frostgrave. We have even run 3.5 DnD adventures that take place in Felstadt. Its our go to game when we arent into other games if that makes sense. Rangers of Shadow Deep is pretty much a Co-Op version or solo of Frostgrave. I do not say the following lightly. Out of the probably 100 or so different miniature game Ive played over the past 2 decades, Rangers of Shadow Deep is my favorite. Ive simply never had more fun playing a game. I play with another guy who loves FG and RoSD as much as me, so never done it solo, but when he and I play its always something we talk about for days afterwards. So even if no one will play Frostgrave with you, you can still have a lot of fun wih Rangers.

DO IT!!!!
Frostgrave looks amazing to play. Kind of like old Necromunda/Mordheim/D&D all mashed up. When I was at Miniature the other day the cashier runs Frostgrave at the store and we chatted for a bit. Definitely will be keeping my eye out for when gaming opens up again.
The paints got out of control, and I never have the right ones . When I sorted through I had triples, quadruples and even 5-6 of two colors. I definitely got scared when they changed the range again so I bought MY colors (averland sunset and chaos black) for painting Scythes of the Emperor. So about 30 of those were duplicates. Still too many. In fact I’m still trying to find a paint rack print that I like for GW that won’t take days to print to hold them all.
I know Graven, I don’t want to have another thread either, but the MODs are discussing a sub forum and having that thread will hopefully show enough demand for a 3D sub forum.
Anyway, just got my spool of filament that was due Friday . Amazon lost it for three days. Loaded it and have my first print running now. Black filament, hopefully will photograph better. The first print I am doing is a test of using the design plate feature on Astroprint.com. I found objective tokens for Rangers of Shadows Deep to use for the cocoon markers. There’s five different 30mm markers that normally I’d print separately at 30 minutes a pop, plus set up and pull times. With the build plate I merged the five into one print file so all 5 are going right now and it says only 1 hour and 32 minutes total, so it’s saving me almost an hour doing it this way.
The black PLA filament I got is from SunLu Filament. Looks good, more expensive ($27.99 delivered with Amazon Prime) for 1Kg. 1Kg is the spool size I used last time which got me all the buildings, paint racks, objectives and such. Overall still a great value, even though the three spools I got coming tomorrow wind up being about $16.50 each with shipping. This black with the wall thickness that was set on the print is semi translucent, which would be awesome to print this in white to be the spiders cocoons .
I have a GW paint rack to try and print afterwards. It’s two ends of the same print and you connect them with dowels.not as nice looking as I’d like, but printer filament and time friendlier than all the other options I saw.
I’ve been rearranging the painting area in the basement of doom.
Hopefully the racks I’m replacing will help. Narrower, but taller and more book and model friendly.
Print is almost done.

Oh I totally understand . If my kids were as young as yours I might sure that’s the route I’d take too.
Print finished. Not as translucent when the tops were done, but that means that if I hollow out the bottom and fit a light it might still have an internal glow to them .
Larcenous Red Robbing Hood had problems as a child with setting things ablaze. Tables, chairs, village idiots, none of them were safe. Luckily it’s these early learned skill sets that have made him a valuable asset to the Frostgrave warband.
In a couple missions in the RoSD rulebook the crew will run across objects of interest (cocooned bundles) and need to investigate. Sometimes there’s magical items or clues inside. Other times lots of baby spiders or bodies of unfortunate victims. Red would normally nuke them from orbit, but as he is limited to a torch and a hatchet for good reasons , he’ll have to do it the hard way.

Printed the GW rack, still not sure. I need to get right size dowel rods which will be 12” wide and should hold 9 across. These are a smaller diameter so it doesn’t stay upright.
Playing spades with the family now.
Have a good night.
Done with cards. My son has no idea how to bid in spades. He either busts or takes four bags each time. I know it’s a learned skill, but we’ve been playing as a family for a long time.
Did some thinking of the rack above. I would need 6 linear feet with that style rack to hold all my GW paints . That is my whole desk width, and it might actually be enough to hold them all, definitely not enough space if I buy any new colors.
Started a print, will take about 12 hours. It’s a freebie necron tomb pillar, designed by DakkaDakka’s Protokraken and part of his Kickstarter which is delivering now. Link to late pledge/news and Rumors thread https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/785065.page#10705046

Well wait no longer. Actual print only took 10 hours and 40 minutes. The print times are a mystery to me as the program is set with my Ender 3 as the printer and the times usually run pretty close. Although when I’m really checking Times it’s on smaller parts so a 40 minute variance on a 11 hour piece might be the same as a 5 minute on an hour. I’m not doing the math, Massive headache right now.
The tomb pillar is great. Awesome design. No problems with the design at all. The smaller side towers are roughly 3” tall and 2” in diameter at the base of those four towers. The overall width is just under 5 1/2” by 5 1/2” with the center tower being roughly 7 1/4” tall. I had a small lift on one corner at the base of the print. It was completely my fault, my print bed wasn’t level so that is no fault of the design. Being still new at printing I’m learning the ropes and making a larger print requires slightly more attention to detail than doing smaller ones. All the symbols came out great in the design. I printed this with no supports and with a 10% infill at draft quality. Not sure if the striations will show after priming, I’ll see later today. Painted Zombicide model for scale reference.
Next steps with this print. Well I don’t play Necrons, but this would be a great piece for them. I do however have a large Ghar force for Beyond the Gates of Antares, and it could be an style they could incorporate . Also I don’t have any battery operated tea light candles, but I think they could be fit inside each of the four smaller towers at their bases and drill down the center holes on each pillar to have light flashes come up out of them. Might also light up the center pillar as well. I’ll have to think about that project later as I don’t have the lights.
To me this is a great piece and the Late backer pledge being open is a tremendous deal if your a Necron (Or Ghar) player.
Also in the picture are a print of the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon character Dungeon Master . I may have found a new apprentice or wizard for my Frostgrave gang.
And behind Red is a D&D Drech, no idea what it is, but saw the design and figured it could be a beast of some sort. Unfortunately I did it as a draft print with no supports, so his poor fingers/claws didn’t make it .
Well, the Ender 3 is doing just fine on small models. I’ll try and get a better quality picture. I’m reorganizing my hobby space and these latest Picts are with terrible lighting.
Master of Dungeons, but only on Saturday mornings many years ago.
23mm from toes to crown of his bald head.
Also I primed the necron Pillar.
You can see the Master of Dungeons there with the cocoon markers and the Dretch too. Print came out phenomenal. Very happy with it.

Yes, between messing about with the printer, having fun with a 20 year old video game (Alpha Centauri), the kids finishing their school year and starting summer school this Monday, a live in mother in law, getting roofing/siding/gutters/windows/carpet and vinyl floor quotes, and rearranging the entirety of my basement to redo my hobby space and build my sons weight room I have been lazy .
But with that spur of get to work my morning did produce these bits.
An archer for my Frostgrave Warband, always criticized for wearing inappropriate foot ware while stalking her prey she swears by the combat heels of her boots and how they allow her to traipse quietly through the woods. Trigs doesn’t care, he likes what they do for her butt .
5 cocoon markers for Rangers of Shadow Deep. Printed in lowest resolution on the printer with little (5%) infill, the striations help when you get really close and make them look even more spider webby. The striations on the base floor painted a light brown really look like wood flooring too .
Last, shortest, but definitely not least is my apprentice for the Frostgrave warband. Formerly a Saturday morning Master of Dungeons, he is venturing to Feldstad in hopes of finding his way home. Somehow he was cast into this world by unknown means, probably from that amusing ride he took in the park , now he is following these riddles which make no sense sung by the Warband leader Frank Mercury. He rattles off so many stories about these kids he knows that Trigs and Red bought (well procured ) him a goat and strapped a horn to the center of its head. That at least shut him up for a little while. He might make a good wizard one day if he would just stop disappearing in the middle of everything.
That should bring me up to 124 for the year. Some other things have gotten touched by the brush too, just nowhere near close to calling them done.

While Dungeon Master disappears when others are around, the warband leader Frank loves to be seen, going so far as teleporting into the heat of battle.
Front and center stage is where he loves to be, his voice rising to unheard of levels as he belts out the vocals of his kind of Magic. A true champion, his magic a Rhapsody.
Up to 125 now. Dungeon master needs a base though.

Well that’s zombicide for you . My eyes are still crossed from trying to paint the red and white diamonds.
Woke up to this on the printer this morning.
Looks like a turd frozen in a blizzard of grey plastic.
In fact it’s three turds...or Dukies....not dookies in plastic. Obviously not the best prints, one sword made it but broke as I dropped him twice on the floor. They will need bases as they are not well balanced.
Still lots of tiny clean up to deal with. All the contact points for the supports leave tiny burrs like sprue gates.
I’m sure I wasted more plastic on the supports than I used to make these three stooges of Venger.
Edit: the next project to start printing has 11 parts. It’s big. Found a large lighthouse which will be a neat centerpiece for a table. Not sure of overall height, but basically 6 stories tall. Ran some numbers and if I print it basically non-stop it will take till Monday . I better order more PLA .

Well the lighthouse is well on its way. Base parts A and C are done, so is the first floor and the two types of lights that can be used in the top, a Brazier or a Magically Lantern. Also my frostgrave Warband is setting up shop in the lighthouse.
Just under 19 hours of printing. Very little down time between prints. Still aiming to get it done by end of Monday. Should definitely be completed by then, just have a few things to do this weekend.
A shopping center behind our house (two houses between us and it) will be having a Black Lives Matter protest in about an hour. My kids and I are going, my wife I should working at the dentist office this morning or would join us. For those who may not know, not sure if this is being seen all over the world like it is here, there has been a lot of protests over the last week in the USA. It all stems from a viral video of a black man being knelt on by a police officer for just under 9 minutes. The video shows him saying he can’t breathe and crying out to his mother. Three other officers stood by and did nothing as the man died. There was some violence at some rallies early on, but most of it has stopped but the movement is growing. I think it’s important for my kids to go and be part of it as this is the world they will be living in.
Also tomorrow is our church reopening, although limited, I have to be there to sanitize between services. It’s been a lot of work getting everything ready and the Pastor has been doing a great job with online services in the mean time. We hope it all goes off without a hitch.
Edit: Also wish Cam a happy Birthday . He’s given us so much joy and entertainment over the years, I think we can muster a few minutes and some good words.

30 hours into this print and still have three stories and a roof left to do.
Next project I should lined up. Found a mill with a water wheel. Between that kit and this one I think I have structures for the two sides of a table for the Thaw of the Lich Lord scenario that takes place on a frozen river. I can have the lighthouse be on one “Shore” and the mill be on the other edge with a frozen stream to supply the wheels movement. The scenario also suggests having boats in the icy river. I’ve seen a couple wooden ships and small boat .stls out there, I might make one of the big boats eventually for the center of the table where the Lich Lords men are retrieving an object of great power from inside the boat and trying to get off the table before the two warbands stop them. Each warband starts on one of the table edges (light house or mill) and the bad guys start in the center and try to make it to one of the neutral edges.
Finding so many great projects to do. I always loved the FW idol of Gork....or was it Mork ? Anyway I found someone’s design for it (or them as they made two different ones) , but when I sliced it up to see how long it would take 36 hours each, at the lowest print setting without all the gibbons that are designed to be attached, and at only a 5% infill . If I ever do those it will probably have to wait till I’m back at work and not waiting for prints to finish.
But Theo, why would you need big Orc items? Well long ago I bought a ton of Mantic Orcs which I tripped over while cleaning my painting area this week, and I want to consider that my project after FrostGrave and Nurgle (which hasn’t gotten any more love lately . Not sure if it would be for Kings of War, Oathmark or for Warlords of Erehwon.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Thanks Joe
Speaking of fun.
So a long time ago....when Black Plague came out and I got the Zombicide Monty Python Knights, I NEEDED a giant wooden bunny. So I made a sad little one out of wooden sticks. So today I started printing a replacement I found.
Unfortunately, I hadn’t recalibrated the print bed and I think there may be an actual bend to mine because the one corner I should where the print edge lifts keep happening. So when the corner of this really started to come loose I was worried I wasted a lot of time on this print. I was in hour 5.5 of a 6 hour print when I heard pop, and the last remaining piece to be finished(the rabbits head) popped off the print bed prematurely. So the tops of the ears are not there . Otherwise the curled corner could be disguised easily enough. It’ll be a while before I decide to reprint the head as it’s servicable right now. I feel like 4 models could fit inside like the Zombicide cars. If nothing else part of the warband can hide while the police arrest Arthur’s men for killing the documentary guy .
Perhaps I should build a giant wooden badger
Also finished the tower and mill, both of those are shown over in my 3D print thread.

Frank looks fabulous. Certainly, he will rock you. Wouldn't mind seeing the Wardukes painted up. Always been a cool-looking character.

Well, Warduke(s) will get painted soonish, I have plans for them in Frostgrave. Until then, with my printed going full speed on a large print, I painted up two sets of the sundries.
Counting the tiny bags as one piece total, with the barrel Golem there that’s 14 model. Should have me at 139ytd. Got two hours of sleep, woke up at just before midnight couldn’t go back to sleep. Feeling it now though.

Love Frank, very cool. Big bunny is also nice, you can fix those ears easily enough.
Enjoying watching all the different bits you're trying out with the printer.

Not enjoying the wait on this print. I’m at 17hours and 46 minutes. Though it is the single largest piece I’ve done. All the extras are another file that I need to print. Not sure it would fit a KOW 75mm base . Which reminds me to go look for a print for a suitable base . Zombicide guy for scale.
Over 19 hours to print, 3 hours of taking off the supports (and I just noticed a few more when I primed him, but this is what was under all the plastic support goodness.
Gork or Mork, I’m not sure, but he is big and ready to stomp on hummies. Far too big for even the 75mm square bases of a Titan in KoW, his foot span is close to 120mm. It’s sad, but I may have to rescale him down. There is another alternate version with both arms down in a come at me Bro pose. I might resize it down instead, use him as a giant.
Started painting using a leopard painting technique I’ve seen used by Luke Towan and Luke from APS. it looks funny now, waiting for it to dry before next layers.
Printing a 170x105mm base for it.
