Rictus' Open Day post is up (see photos and more news on his blog)
https://recalcitrantdaze.blogspot.de/2017/08/forge-world-open-day-2017-part-1.html#more
Here are the pictures from today's Forge World Open Day.
These are just of anything new on display. Pics from exhibitions etc will wait till part two.
Specialist Games:
First a bit of info from chatting to the Specialist Games team.
NOTE: I'm not a reporter, I wasn't recording things or taking notes so:
I may have misheard,
I may have mis-remembered,
I may have misunderstood and
things change.
So while I am happy to pass on anything I heard it is no guarantee things won't happen differently...
Specialist Games is all plastic, so that's BB teams, Necromunda gangs etc. Star Players, special characters etc will remain resin though. While they would like these to be plastic they just don't have enough designers to do that. Most star players are done in peoples free time outside of work and then bought by FW on a freelancers rate.
Necromunda is not the reason for Adeptus Titanicus being pushed back. Necro has been in the plans since March (I think it was March) [Warhams-77 2016?] and the release date is pretty much still on course. AT has been pushed back because it has grown far beyond what was originally planned.
The White Dwarf which has the pictures of Mortarian which leaked recently also has the Necro preview in, so it's a surprise pics of that didn't leak as well.
[..]
Necromunda.
Yup, Necromunda...the buggers kept that quiet.
Plastic gangs - Escher and Goliath in the box set which will not contain plastic terrain but will have card terrain so it can be used straight out of the box. This keeps the price down as many will already have terrain for it.
More gangs beyond the original houses will be coming out.
The rules are not just the last versions but all new, biggest change will be going away from the I go - you go turns.
Bases will be available separately, nothing bigger than 40mm currently planned.
Plastics will have lots of options and interchangeability etc. Lots of ways to customise.

You're wrong. The hood's aren't fine. People who know what they're supposed to be may not have a problem with them, but that will only be a tiny percentage of the people who see them. They will generate negative reactions and bad press. You think the Fristgrave Cultists weren't a problem? Thats because they're a tiny release form a tiny company that no one ever heard of. GW is the largest tabletop gaming company in the world. If they do a release of KKK guys with flamethrowers there will be a huge backlash, no matter how many people like you say "Anyone who can't separate toy soldier designs from real life has other issues". It doesn't matter that a lot of that backlash will come from people who never played a GW product and have no interest in doing so. It doesn't matter that this style of hood is only really associated with racism in the United States. It doesn't matter that the hood has a long history in Europe. It's a ridiculously awful idea.Especially right now.
I do believe that the matter is quite subjective, and thus there is no wrong or right answer. The hood has historical context beyond hatred, thought arguably still not a cheerful one in full context, and in all likelihood the Klan co-opted a Catholic symbol to diminish it when they chose the style. It's also not terribly dissimilar from how the Imperial Aquila is often mistaken for a Nazi symbol since the Germans loved them some eagles (still do, technically), which they actually took from the Romans and it probably goes back farther than that.
There's really two ways such things go. One, the person is actually a hate-monger in which case it's good for that to be advertised so the community can react accordingly such as Lockark's example shows. If the community doesn't want to react negatively then it is a free country, and that's one of the downsides of that fact. In the other case the person with the models is perfectly normal and actually understands history. If someone wants to start spouting nonsense about the Klan and Nazi-ism, that's still hate-mongering and it still needs to be fought with knowledge. Knowledge leads to understanding, and that's the only way to stop hate; not sweeping it under the rug and pretending it isn't there. If they actually prompt a conversation then that's to the good. If someone's mind is closed, then 1) they do a great job of fitting in with 40k and 2) they're part of the problem.
That said, I wouldn't want a group of Redemptionists for this game. I am very impressed by the Escher models though, and will certainly be picking this up when it's released.

Pity there's no new terrain I can understand not using the Sector Mechanicus stuff in the box to keep the price down I wonder if they'll bring back the plastic bulkheads to use with the card terrain?
New bases are good less 40k specific details much more useful in generic settings. Looks like this is the first GW game I'll be getting in a very long time (I did buy a lot of the new terrain recently but not SW)

Honestly, I keep forgetting that the KKK actually exists, until somebody reminds me about them. If I was a european, Roman Catholic I'd be bloody annoyed that the KKK had sullied a piece of religious headgear by association.
Still, I can understand why GW might want to drop the pointy hoods.

Plastic bulkheads would be great, indeed. They will also support playing on Zone Mortalis tiles (so indoor fighting basically) with dedicated rules.
The Shadow War/Admech terrain product line may get some more kits in the future based on other open day reports. Edit: From GW
Rictus must have got the date wrong though, March 2016 was mentioned by other sources as start of working on the new Necromunda. Anyway, a great batch of info. Thanks Rictus

Big plastic terrain bundles later this year. They had been leaked already

Well, that and the USA is not really all the world. Over here, pointy hoods mean holy week and processions, not KKK. I mean, we know that the Klan is, but it's nowhere near what we would associate first with pointy hood redemptionists.
That said, I'm not sure how important the hoods really are for the gang, you know?
It's mostly a hierarchy thing. The guys with the biggest hats are highest up in hierarchy. Got a point hat and you're deacon. Got a skull on you pointy hat and you're leader.

Not to get involved in that particular argument, but the red part may matter a lot more than you might think. GW as a British company producing first and foremost for a British market might not care if some upset colonials have a tantrum and throw their miniatures into the harbor.

The rights and wrongs not withstanding, GW is a multi-million £/$/€, international, publicly listed company. It will not want to needlessly have the chance of getting caught up in this debate with the potential for it to blow up in their face.

I thought some of the goliaths were okay compared to the originals, but generally speaking all the new stuff looked pretty rubbish in my opinion. I initially thought the ash wastes shaman was some ancient fantasy figure they'd yanked out to go along with the rules.

I thought some of those initial fanatic miniatures (Ash Wastes Shaman, the Farseer) were miniatures that were going unused so they snatched them up.
Some of the models they did were quite good. The new Orlocks were a bit more biker than the originals, but blend in well enough. The Goliaths weren't as exaggerated, but the style fit. The Scavvies felt smaller, the Ratskins dirtier, but the Redemptionists were fantastic (even better as the Reds, like the Van Saars before them, got the fewest models out of the Outlander releases*, so having new ones was a blast - I think I bought 2-3 boxes of them).

Well, it was nice while it lasted. But that just put this into the same territory as the newer 40K releases - pretty models that I'll look at, but never bother buying because they don't fit with what I already own.
So when did they release plastic SoB that isn't Celestine or a cannoness?
I think what Insaniak is trying to say is that any argument about the popularity and marketability of SoB went out the window the second both SoB kits released last year (Canoness and Celestine w/ retinue) absolutely flew off the shelves. It has been proven that there is a market for the army, and that market is absolutely chomping at the bit to buy more. GW is foolish if they aren't already at least in the design phase of a larger plastic line for the army after that.

Glad I invested the time in the SWA terrain, this may pay off.
The terrain bundles they are proposing for this are rather odd, it is just putting together old kits, nothing new.
Oh well, I wonder if it will be exclusively gang warfare or we can throw some other groups into the mix?
Gangs doing a smackdown on some Orks would be fun (or should I say receiving a smackdown?).
This all may give something cool to present in our local gaming convention for next year.

I'm hoping it's at least halfway decent and that lots of people get rid of it cheaply to upgrade to plastic.

Yeah, I assumed they were test sculpts lying around that weren't getting used otherwise. I can't think of a better reason for why they shoehorned that terrible Farseer model into the setting.
Taking a look at all the fanatic models now and for the most part I'll stick with my original opinion. Newer Goliaths definitely look better to me as they aren't quite so cartoonish, and I'm actually impressed with most of the Ratskins but they're being let down by chiefs and shaman, and they struggle with being compared to the original ratskins which I think were the best looking of the original Necro models.
Surprised to learn there's actually a Redwart model kicking about out there. Looks prety damn good too. It'll be interesting to see if they stick with the old characters or if they'll come up with new ones. I'd really like to see an official Gorg model and an updated Kal.

I wanted the SWA terrain, but after looking over my piles of Deadzone and Infinity terrain, I figured I'd be ok.
I hope the Arbites get a real Grimm Dark thing. I love modern DREDD style stuff. I'm going to need some bikes, cyborg dogs, riot shields, power mauls.....
Who doesn't love over armored cops beating on space hippies?

It might allow for prettier models... but the end result is pretty models that don't fit in with existing collections, and that's just frustrating.
But this isn't scale creep, is the point. They established a new scale,
people hoping they're in the same scale as the 17 year old metals?
Establishing "a new scale" is the very definition of "scale creep".
Given how stupid it is that ordinary humans have gotten HUGE in the move to plastic, and how it devalues plastic SMs and Orcs and Nids and everything else, going back 20 years for the size of a regular human recruit is the best idea. I've said as much before, and I'll say it again. Plus, the plastic Catachans and Cadians look stupid.
No it isn't. Scale creep is the scale consistently getting bigger (creeping up gradually), which is bad because then everything is out of scale with everything else.
What they seem to have done is stuck to "normal" size humans and "bigger" humans and hopefully it continues like that so all modern releases are consistent with each other.
Are the new plastics in scale with the previous metals? No, they are not. They are clearly "out of scale" with the metals, hilariously badly so.
Unlike large scale =I=nquisitor, GW has yet to announce the are moving to a new scale. In theory, all of the 40k minis are the same scale. That is "scale creep", pure and simple.
It is unbelievelable that you guys are arguing otherwise. It's like you'd argue day is night time on a cloudy day.
If you don't know what scale creep is, and can't even follow your own definitions, maybe you should stop arguing the point.

Wow, and I thought (as many) that Shadow Wars was the replacement for Necromunda.
Cool to see it's going to be coming back, too.
