Subject: Calling all Greybeards! What do you wish they'd bring back from old editions?
|
 |
Hurr! Ogryn Bone 'Ead!
|
I never stopped collecting the miniatures, but I haven't played religiously since 3rd Edition. Every couple years I bust out the original WH40k:RT rulebook and thumb through it and, while there were lots of bad ideas, I'm still amazed at all the cool ideas that fell by the wayside.I saw the Repulsor and thought "Hey, this is a move in the right direction! Looks way cooler than Rick Priestley's "Grav Attack Tank" deodorant bottle".
Is there anything you wish they'd bring back, or an idea you liked that never made it to Production? Here's my wish list off the top of my head:
1. Zoats (Hard to find those Dragon Ogre bodies...)
2. Imperial Jetbikes (Yeah, the Custodes have them, but the Space Marines and IG used to have them as well)
3. IG assault squads
4. Power Shield options for IG and SM assault squads (No, Storm Shields are different.)
5. Power Field generators
6. Conversion Fields and Displacer Fields
7. And what list like this would be complete without Squats?
Stuff I'm glad they got rid of:
1. Temporal Distort
2. "Hiding" rules
3. Stupid-looking Dark Eldar
4. Rules for throwing rocks
5. Anti-Plant grenades
Stuff I'm glad never went 'into Production':
1. Slaan
2. Mutants (Cool idea, but the d1000 charts were a nightmare)
3. Psychic Ogryns
I'm sure I got more, but I have to get back to work. Let me know what you wish they'd bring back.

I never played in the real oldhammer days, but I started in 3rd edition when a lot of older models were still available by order, or for cheap on eBay. TBH... I think that GW has just about pumped the nostalgia well dry. Genestealer cults and Harlequins are great, and bringing back lots of little things like conversion beamers and Shokk Attack gun has been cool. For me, the only really old thing that I'd like back is more of a concept than anything specific, and it's the squats. Looking at what they did with the Overlords, I really think gW could knock sci-fi dwarves out of the park now.

I remember when I first started, the demo sets were SM versus DE. Man what a glorious time. I liked the older hunchback-looking Necrons better than the current ones.

Well looted wagons for starters. Look, I'm not looking for a BS 5+ vehicle from another army, just make up some random stats like you did in 7th edition. Its absolutely ridiculous that is was removed for the orks, and saying 'just use it as a battlewagon' is ridiculous because of scale alone.
Some more wacky 'make your own models' type of stuff. Anyone remember the 40k creature feature where you could make your own aliens and plant life for your games? The chapter approved build your own land raider was not only restricting, but also lacking points (I dont expect to use it at LVO, GW, but most of us play point games in case the last 8 editions weren't any indication).
The old white dwarves were filled with custom characters, custom units, and custom armies. It really gave you some modeling freedom, and since most games are played with friends it didn't matter if stats were either too good or too bad. But we can't have that because then someone will use it in a tournament and it will be OP or something. I like that they give us new alternate missions and rules for their secondary games/board games, but literally NOTHING for 40k and Sigmar?
Also remove the stupid seize the initiative rule. We did fine without it. Literally nothing happens between finding out who goes first and seizing, so it has zero reason to be there.

Would love to see Doomrider and World Eater / Emperor's Children lists from Slaves to Darkness. I liked the way Librarians and Apothecaries were used in those lists.
+1 for Looted Wagons. Those made Orks great for a long time.
I'm glad they got rid of Invisibility vis a vis 6th edition rules. It was just a way to hide a Daemon until it got to close to do anything about it. Crutch.

Harlequin powerfists.
Not seriously, but I own ~10 harlequin powerfist masters (because powerfists in 2nd ed just set your strength to 8, mitigating the harlequins' main weakness). They were gloriously silly looking. I use them as caresses, of course.
On a more serious note, I'd love for open/narrative play to re-introduce some rules for some of the skirmish-ier elements of play, like vehicles having crewmen that would die and rolling for component damage, having speeds etc. I loved dreadnoughts getting their arms and legs blown off, gunners getting sniped and the heroic driver setting the vehicle to hover while he clambered over to the turret...
Not saying there'd be any way to re-integrate that kind of stuff to the scale the games at now, but a revitalization of 2nd ed style rules into a skirmish ruleset would be amazing.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Who needs power-armour when you can go to war in tight pants with nothing more?
2) Orks needs to have boar-riders, splatta-kannons, pulsa-rokkits, squig catapults and Ogryn back. Yes, Ogryn.
3) The eldar ultramarine librarian and grand inquisitor sherlock closeau NEEDS to be brought back.
4) Dark Eldar prisoners. What is a grimdark future without big-breasted women pointlessly wearing swimsuits?

I think looted wagons shouldn't be a thing, covers too many differant things, rather I'd like to see (admittingly it'd proably be open play rules) something for rules for Orks looting any vehicle. some sort of "do x, do y, ajust the PL by X"

I'd say the majority of ideas in 2nd edition - but then...that's why I still play a modified version of 2nd edition (and yes, I think I still prefer it to 8th).
However, 2nd edition is a game developed by true gamer geeks...without corporate interference or any real semblance of balance. It was still very much clinging to its more-RPG-esque roots. It made for incredibly thematic/storied games...but it required a more noticeable contract between players to get there.
There was no such thing as "rules as written" except for "that guy" in the occasionaly gaming group. It was far more based around a gentleman's agreement to have a fun/cool game.
-The Avatar (being made of molten metal) was immune to plasma/melta/flamers - though he had this in a few later editions.
-Daemons being summoned by crazy points acquired by Chaos characters/units (the coolest rule being that enemy models teleporting had a chance of showing up as a daemon when they arrived - that included Warp Spiders jumping around the board!)
-I really miss crew in vehicles. I think we all had that game where a lone crewmen was feverishly darting around inside a vehicle firing various weapons, etc...or the plucky small group of Guardsman who grabbed their laspistols and set out to fight after being dismounted.
-Wargear was definitely far more interesting (and easily abused).
-Morale being a bigger deal would be cool, seeing things like Fear and Terror return, but actually be worthwhile.
-Reducing armour penetration as range increases, that's a rule most people don't even know existed in 2nd edition, but adds a little bit of realism to the game.
-Paying for teleporting, meaning you could have Terminators for a more reasonable cost if you didn't buy them the gear to teleport.
-Bikes having a hit-and-run attack option
-Being able to dismount vehicles at speed if you're willing to risk dying/injury.
There are far more, but it's a rather useless topic - as the game has moved on. The scale and size of the game is 2-3x what I used to play in high school, if not more. It's no longer a borderline skirmish game, but a "fill the table with models" game.

That was the one that literally made your character jump about the place when making a save?
I loved Dark Millennium (the 2nd ed supplement) with all those wargear cards: bionics, digital lasers, combat drugs, targeters, special grenades, force fields. It brought huge balance issues with every Eldar force having a vortex grenade armed Swooping Hawk Exarch but what fun!
I suppose many of the psychic powers have survived since then and the strategy cards have recently been brought back with strategems so its legacy lives on!
