So, with the discount this seems to give, how is GW & Hatchett making their money off of this? Are the retail models that overpriced or is there some background cost that will kick in with the later issues where they will make their money back?
The maths indicates a total saving of around 30-40% on retail. That should leave room for profits for both companies, and maybe a legacy of new plastic crack addicts.

First few issues give a steep discount but after that the discount is much less. Considering the cost of the raw materials and the efficiency savings in large production runs for the models (ie fewer retooling stages between manufacturing sprues as they are bulk producing lots of the same) they will still be making money. For GW it is an entry point as well. If kids get the bug they will want more - paints, whatever cool model they saw in WD etc. If GW just break even an Hachette make all the profit they will still have “won”.
The first issue is a loss leader to get people hooked. Indeed the first couple of issues in the subscription with all the free gifts probably are as well.
After that you have to remember the average model sprue contains about half a pence of plastic in it. At £7.99 there is a huge profit margin in these magazines.
it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.
Indeed, considering the kits will all have had their molds paid for by now from sales, plastic is cheap.
And the aim is bringing lots more into the hobby, so long run it’s worthwhile for them.

I love the idea of the collection ( I'm 133 issues into a star trek model one) but primaris and cartoon nurgle models just aren't my thing. If this had been classic marine's I'd have been all over it.
Might pick up the odd issue if the local newsagent continues to stock it, when things like the land speeder / bikes appear.
Maybe if this is successful we will see AoS or LOTR collections which are more appealing.
It doesn’t stay in stores, though you can order issues from their website (and potentially it seems Forbiden Planet).
And people have been asking if they’ll do AoS and they said if this does well which is our focus now, then we’d love to move into other game settings.
Though that’s Conquest staff, I guess they have no say, it’s GW’s choice

Couple of things, anyone know when the next issues are out to subscribers and secondly, how does one go about upgrading one's subscription to premium? I presume it is a case of emailing Hachette?

You can begin a premium subscription by subscribing here and selecting the premium subscription option. If you have already begun your subscription but wish to upgrade to a premium subscription, you can do so before you reach Issue 05. In order to upgrade, please contact our Customer Service Team.
Found in the FAQ (that's strangely on the Contact page)
Want to get more from your Warhammer 40,000: Conquest playing experience? We've got the offer for you. For an extra £1.50 per issue, you'll receive 4 premium kits that each include:
- Conquest Storage Box
- Data Cards
- Conquest Dice
- Punch Tokens
- Heavy Duty Play Mat
nobody's got a straight answer to exactly what's in the first one above other than that pic/text, and no info on what's going to be in the other 3

Oh ok. I went and looked and then thought that they were the 4 premium bits (Dice, tokens, cards, and mats), but if all that is just one of the four extras it seems good value so far for newbies.
A few observations from someone new to the 40K game, but not painting GW miniatures...
1. They've talked about these Silver Templars as a new chapter exclusive to the magazine, and yet the first bunch of painting guides has us painting Ultramarines. I wonder if the guide will pivot at some point and switch focus to Silver Templars? Perhaps that's why get a second set of Reivers, and why there's more points in space marines than death guard in the full set? (And maybe why we didn't get a UItramarines transfer sheet). On the other hand, going fully down the Silver Templar route would necessitate a lot of entirely new content in terms of painting guides, artwork and fluff. Which makes it seem less likely.
2. The images suggest that all the sprues will be in appropriately coloured plastic. Not just the First Strike ones. If this actually is the case then we know that these sprues are being produced specifically for the magazine, not just being sourced from warehoused Dark Imperium etc. sprues. Obviously just producing coloured plastic versions is ridiculously simple compared to messing with the sprue layout as you don't need a new mold, but at the same time it suggests other changes are not impossible.
3. The point of the premium sub looks very much around making the contents into a standalone game: the big box, the dice, the cards and tokens - it strikes me as stuff for people that want to collect and put together something that works independently and less for those that want to "get in to the hobby" - if we get anything else, I'd expect it to be along those lines. Plastic range rulers rather than full Codexes.

Exactly the same way that the Start Collecting boxes work combined with not having to run a retail store to sell the magazines.
Once you eliminate some of the overheads, things make more profit.

It might be the Silver Templars are just going to be used in the "story" parts of the magazine, rather than as part of the painting.
Maybe theyre going to include articles about stripping the paint and starting again, but I doubt that.
Some years ago I subscribed to a magazine that built a robot in parts, more than once they had you fit things together only to have to take it apart later because there was a new module with new code in.
Is anyone who's subscribed to this still waiting for their first delivery? I paid almost 2 weeks ago but nothing yet. My instagram is full of folks who've received theirs.
Dont think this is going to be like a Premium upgrade in a pledge manager where you get more. Premiummfor partworks is for whales, you get not a lot for a serious price upgrade. Those who are savvy to component cost effectiveness should not buy premium. Those who want the experience of the subcription run rather thna just the % savings, then Premium may be for you and my advice should be discarded if it boosts your customer experience.
Maybe this should help you.
If you buyy 40K Legends series from Hachette you get hardback novels at £10 each.
If you pay £1 more you get six limited edition art prints.
Thus for £10 you get a Black Library book, for approx £60 - £80 or the amount of the length of the run you get six A4 art prints.
Meanwhile if you subscribe you get oen book free, and A3 galactic map a notebook an =I= tankard and some coasters, and you get that upgrade for free.
Subscription is worth it for anyone, premium is for whales.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Received mine at the weekend,
Will be worth sending them an email rather than phoning,
Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?
Yeah I'm not planning on getting the whole lot as I don't need armies cluttering my house, but I want the extras so will probably cancel after getting the painting handle thing. I'll give them a few more days as it did say within 28 days on the email.
