It should not be forgotten that France is also a nuclear power. So independent of the US, we have nuclear capability in Europe. And Germany could likely develop such capability if it ever decided it needed to.

I doubt Germans would stand for developing nuclear power. We barely tolerate the nuclear reactors. How much drama does a CASTOR transport get nowadays?

We are talking about a world where the US no longer cares about it's European allies. I think pragmatism and a desire to defender ourselves from a hostile Russia would win out.

Oregon ranchers pardoned by Trump fly home on Pence donor's private jet

The Times attributes the Hammonds' private ride home with Lucas to an abundance of lobbying that took place to secure the ranchers' pardon.

Lucas reportedly donated $50,000 to Pence and his wife while Pence was running for governor of Indiana. According to the Times, Lucas also gave Pence two tickets worth $774 to attend an Indianapolis Colts game in 2017.

Lucas, whose company also reportedly owns the naming rights to the NFL team's Lucas Oil Stadium, has lobbied extensively against animal-rights activists. The Times reported that Lucas used Protect the Harvest to lobby for the Hammonds' release.

So this just in:
North Korean officials have failed to turn up for talks with a US team on the repatriation of the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean war.

Returning the remains was a commitment from the 12 June summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump in Singapore.

....
There is speculation that North Korea may also want payment for the return of the remains, our correspondent says.

That awkward moment when Trump claims "great progress" 5 minutes later.

I'm from NY, father lives in NYC, Trump is rude by NYC standards. He's also a clown and a failure by their standards and we're all rather upset anyone fell for the same crap he's pulled here for years.

And NY isn't rude, we just don't have time for people meandering their way to the point. Get to the point, we act, we move on to the next thing, we have things to do. Work with some people down south, wish this was more wide spread in the US.

How is he the best bet though? His approach is not that exceptional and not very specific on East Asia. He is quite run of the mill and neither good or bad when it comes to containing China. Although partly that is also down to Xi Jinping damaging China to compensate for some Trump missteps.

Ignoring the all news is equally bad argument. Even if you did your own research on Trump from multiple sources its abundantly clear that Trump as a businessman is terrible, he is a celebrity brand because of opportunities offered to him by the media. Trump objectively is a bad dealmaker because he can't compromise and his multiple bankruptcies. The idea only survives due to confirmation bias.

I was more or less trying to be funny. Though I find that really hard to believe you find NYers to be nicer than Texans. Terms like "Southern Charm" didn't just come out of nowhere.

If we are talking about manners though -
In the South - people say please/sir/mam on a regular basis - hold doors open for people.
In the North - people cuss in random conversations with strangers and have no time to hold the door.

I'm confused. How does alienating the allies that made America great and cosying up to her traditional adversaries further those aims?

Normally don't back these things, but we could, if it was the actual goal and there was actual support for it.

As it is, the US is not a nation on war footing, we're pussy footing wars in random places to get some young men killed so some elected officials can look very somber in front of caskets.

So in a way it's worse than not being able to, it's just that a lot of dead foreigners and a couple dead Americans makes for a really good photo op.

Been to NY a couple times and never really found it to be nearly as bad as people like to portray it. In fact most of the people I have met were nice. Of course it is always been New York City so I'm not sure about places like Albany or Rochester so maybe the people there are just terrible.

No they don't. What China holds in US debt is vastly overblow (and that debt sword cuts both ways). Japan holds almost as much and you're not speaking Japanese right now. And for all the power the US wields, you would be surprised how little English the pre internet generations speak.

As soon as America's compromised president is deposed, I am confident (read: hoping against hope) that the following administration will provide robust safeguards against this happening in the future. Pax Americana has been one of the safest and most prosperous times in human history. I am loathe to discover what hegemonic Chinese rule is like.

What's funny is - Trump is your best be at not being ruled by the Chinese in the next 30 years.

How is he the best bet though? His approach is not that exceptional and not very specific on East Asia.

This is how all news is man. Fake news is the news someone else listens to. Heck - my Dad taught me when I was very young I shouldn't believe anything I hear on TV without researching it from multiple sources. This was when I was like 4 years old so...About 1990. It's always been like this.

Not saying that you should ignore all news. There really isn't an impartial source anywhere these days. Just agenda pushers.

China practically owns the united states. We owe them huge amounts of money. Pretty soon - we will all be speaking Chinese.

Haven't seen that old tape rolled out in a while, you are like my old elementary school teacher who was always ranting and raving about the red chinese taking over the world back in the 90s.

Pretty good foresight. From a country with practically no economy to unquestioned number 2 with a growth rate 5 times higher than number 1....yeah...that person was brilliant.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.
