I'm positive about it for now. It looks like the kind of movie Star Wars could do with right now, which is to say primarily a fun adventure movie.
The hope is that it will turn out out better than the show due to the shorter runtime forcing some focus, mostly through severe restraint on side quests.

I'd be surprised if you even need to watch the Mandalorian.
After the nightmare of MCU and Disney+ overlap, I assumed you had to watch 936,636² hours of TV shows to get an inkling of what's going on.

Ultimately? We dunno. We don’t know what the overall story is.
We can guess some plot beats (taking out Imperial Remnants, dealing with Jabba’s son), but no more than that.
Star Wars has always played its cards close to its chest with trailers. At least in the Disney era. I enjoy that myself, as I’ve a growing preference, in this era of rampant spoilers and dreg level memes, to go in knowing as little as possible about a movie. But I get it’s not to everyone’s taste.

There's not a LOT of plot threads to resolve. Season 3 kind of reset the status quo to "muscle for hire and his adopted Jedi child". I can't really think of anything they could bring up that would be that difficult to pick up unless they decide to make the Darksaber a thing again after they rather clumsily resolved it.

I expect it’ll be a launch point for future shows. Not just Mando S4, but Rogue Squadron and all that stuff. Maybe even a retooled Rangers of the New Republic etc.

Doing Andor again from the top, as I don’t think I’ve done that since S2 concluded.
I continue to be blown away by it. It absolutely is Star Wars, just in an entirely new and gripping way.
It’s a more mature take on the setting, dealing with intrigue, subterfuge and just…y’know, more mature themes. But it never forgets to be fun. It’s just fun in a different way.
And I love the structure of the first season. It’s essentially four mini-series, each with its own three act story.
Star Wars entirely aside? It’s just a damned good spy/political thriller. That it’s managed to integrate itself fully with what are essentially a bunch of Kids Movies is just the cherry on the top.

In the era of weekly timeslots it was all about getting an episode out whether you had a worthwhile idea or not. You find with a lot of these shows what's going on is the writers phoning something in while they spend the majority of their time and talent perfecting the arcs and stories they really want to focus on. This is often particularly true with animation, where they'll take shortcuts wherever possible so they can blow the budget on a big action sequence.

What it does so well is get across the scale of the conflict, and how Palpatine spun his web ever further. And what even more than the films is still fundamentally A Kid’s Show, it does political shenanigans and flimflammery really well.
It’s just some stories (R2 and his Astromech Commandos…) either fall flat, or go on an episode or two too long.

But without the R2 Astromech Commandos arc, we don't get introduced to Gregor, and see how badass a single Republic Commando can be!

I liked it, the non verbal robots, the pompous colonel much fun.
I did however skip the younglings getting their light sabres.
Did you skip the entire arc or just the Ilum episode? I like the youngling arc for involving Hondo and giving Ahsoka another duel with Grievous that builds on the one from early in the show and highlights how much more accomplished she got in the meantime.
Also has one of the funniest B1 comments in the show.

What there is fun, especially the big finale scrap. But it doesn’t quite convince as a Crime Lord muscling in with essential a dozen in his goon squad.

So it's a victim of being made during the Covid era?

Instead of the Boba Fett bad @$$ bounty hunter and crime lord show I've wanted since I was in 3rd grade we got A Man Called Horse and the Crime Lord Who Never Does No Crimes.
