I hope they give him a superhero film next.

Probably a remake of an older beloved film or franchise, like a Muppet Christmas Carol but entirely CGI with no actual muppets.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

He did make mention of His version of Back to the Future. Not a remake, but a "reimaginig." Like how Super 8 was a "reimaginig" of E.T.

So... really crappy.

Mac and Me was a better “reimagining” of ET than Super 8. There, I said it.

Land of the Lost (2009)

A comedy in which a paleontologist invents a tachyon manipulation thingamajig to travel sideways through time into a parallel dimension where past, present and future are one. He, his colleague and a random dude do just that but lose the device in the process. Now they're stranded until they can retrieve it. If only it wasn't for the hostile fauna...

I liked it. It's funny for the most part and the high definition retro set designs (and lizard people) look great. I guess I shouldn't have waited a decade and a half to finally watch it.

The movie is also proof that Jurassic Park is way too serious about dinosaurs and you can't just totally get away with injecting some Gremlins into your compsies, but that it's even a good idea. We need a whole movie like that.

Thunderbolts - 2025

Finally gotten around to a few more Marvel movies.

I enjoyed this one. Only one gripe and it's more or less the same as complaint as Guardians 3. Fun movie but another characters back story which this time wasn't as bad for me as the other. So much less annoying. I like the cast of characters and that the Thunderbolts was an ingroup joke name.
Walker. I really like Walker. He's what I feel Cap would be like if he came from the modern world. I'd like the two of them on a one off movie. Not exactly sure how it should play out but I think it would be fun. At one point I thought I'd like to see the punisher with one of those characters, again not sure how that would work.
Over all I'm looking forward to more.

Captain America - 2025.

This was a lot better than I had expected it to be. I was pleased to hear Ant -Man referenced several times and I hope they do something with that. My favorited bit was Ross Hulking out in the rose garden. The AAARRRRHOOOOOO! was solid gold.
Very robot Nixon, I loved it.
Sam makes for a decent cap. Kinda wish he's get that super soldier serum for his own safety.
And Spider-man was right, that shield defies physics. Which was partly annoying, more annoying when it's being thrown around while flying with fighter jets. I smell some small level of Asgard mischief . It was much less obvious before.

I plan to rewatch the last tow Thor movies next. (At some point. )

Upgrade

AKA Superior Venom.

Four hired thugs kill Grey’s wife and leave him quadriplegic. Then a tech billionaire offers an experimental chip to let him walk again. And seek vengeance.

It still holds up.
After Megan 2.0, which had a lot of Ugrade’s elements, including the style of action, my son wanted to see what we were referencing. Upgrade is a lot darker and less funny than Megan 2.0. It has more blood and a tighter script. And the action is stylistically memorable, worth watching for Sci Fi or action movie fans. It will also change the way you see those Pepsi commercials with the cameras stabilized on the cans.

Watch it.

Alien Romulus

Yes. Again.

Good gravy this film has incredible attention to detail. Despite neatly 40 years of film making advances? You could play this, Alien and Aliens and assume they’re from the same era.

The overall lighting, which plays such a massive part of these films is absolutely spot on.

Even frost/ice melting once they restore the station’s atmosphere is there.

The technology is tough and utilitarian. Whilst in Alien/Aliens it was kinda futuristic? In the modern day it feels practical. Nowt too fancy or difficult to maintain and repair, because you’re a long, long way from the nearest Apple Genius Bar type stuff. Robust, reliable, not overly fancy.

And yes, the still immense praise for Andy. David Jonsson deservedly bagged a BAFTA for this, and frankly deserved an Oscar, given he ultimately portrays three characters throughout, and seamlessly.

If you’ve still not seen this? Especially if you’re reticent due to many films in the series being lack lustre at best*? Get This In Your Eye Holes.

It’s absolutely superb.

*No, Alien Resurrection is not lack lustre. I love that film and will defend it to my dying breath.

I did like how they snuck in a special edition of Alien: Romulus. The DVD Rook is improved from the theatrical release.

I wish Cameron would stop remaking Ferngully: The Last Rainforest over and over and get around to his talked about Special Effects upgrade of Aliens.

Giving that new War of the Worlds a try.

First grumble? Ice Cube is playing a government anti-terror computer spod. And it makes it clear there’s plenty of surveillance stuff.

But……somehow nobody spotted the presumably Martian for now ships coming? Even in the original novel, with just tellingscopes, they saw something on Mars.

That being said? So far the shaky cam isn’t that shaky. Because Ice Cube appears to be watching this all unfold from his desk, switching between various live feeds. Which is at least an interesting premise.

I completely forgot about this movie. I remember the previews and thinking it looks a lot like Venom (the first apartment fight sequence). Even the lead actor bears a resemblance to an early Tom Hardy, if memory serves. Its on the list!

Tenebrae

“I only drink while I’m on duty.”

This is the most mainstream Dario Argento movie I’ve seen so far. (Also the trashiest.) When bestselling murder-thriller author Peter Neal travels to Rome to promote his book Tenebrae, a serial killer fan starts leaving him letters about all the deviants they are killing in Neal’s name. Can Neal catch this murderer with the help of Italy’s most chill Homicide detective before they murder everyone he cares about?

The film does a good job of keeping you guessing and ratcheting up the tension building up to the kind of balls-out ending you’d expect from a giallo. It’s not aa stylized as Suspiria or Opera. There are still some Argento trademarks, such as a long tracking shot across the windows and over the roof of an apartment building that is a roller coaster of suspense. The music is top tier. The soundtrack for Tenebrae is for suspense-thrillers what Suspiria’s is for horror, an all-time classic.

If you want to dip your toe into giallo without going full-Argento, Tenebrae is a great place to start. Even if you don’t, check out the soundtrack sometime when you are alone in a car park or hall of mirrors.

Gorgo

The most British Godzilla.

We just skipped to the kaiju action, and this movie delivered. If you want to see a man in a Dino costume smashing model buildings, treat yourself to Gorgo. There was also a shocking stunt (set accident?) where someone fell over a railing head-first during one of the panicked crowd scenes. You won’t see that in the age of CGI and set safety regulations.

The Crow (1994)

The goth movie. Dude and dudette get murderized on the eve of their wedding. The cat survives unharmed. Little did the bad guys know they murderized Gothic Murder Jesus. Revenge from beyond the grave ensues. Kitty is still alive and well, and is even implied to get a hotdog.

A classic for good reason. It's well made, stays on point and packs a lot into its moderate runtime without running into pacing issue. Best enjoyed in a dark room if you want to see what's going on, because it's rainy night all day in the movie. It would be. It's the goth movie.

The Crow (2024)

The emo movie. Whiny little bitch and his girlfriend get over half an hour of exposition to help you hate them adequately, then let you down by dying in a downright gentle and unsatisfying way. Whiny little bitch returns for some stumbling around the land of the living, whining and moping and going back and forth between the land of the living and the land of the dead, until eventually between a lot of whining and moping revenge from beyond the grave ensues. There is no cat. Nor a hotdog.

Boy is this one tedious. At just a little runtime over the classic, there is a lot more yapping, pointless flashbacks and a general lack of brevity. The music was chosen by someone with a lousy taste in music. There's, like, sunshine and gak in this movie. I really don't know what they were thinking.

Yeah, I haven't watched the new one (and why would one. And who will remember it in 8 years.), but I did re-watch the old one recently, and it still rocks. Just a cool looking film that gets to the point. It's got guitars, loads of vague magic, Ernie Hudson, action, a charismatic lead, a few good people and several bad ones, good action. The Crow could easily be an annoying prick, but he's cool, kinda fun and likeable. The bad guy is equally fun and evil. Great film. Not perfect by a long shot, a bit uneven, but cool and memorable. And I'll take uneven, cool and memorable any day of the week.

Oh yeah, cat and hotdogs its got as well.

Probably because the cretin has somehow got another new film out, Amazon just vomited up a load of Adam Sandler movies as recommendations.

How can someone so deeply untalented get to keep making movies?

Because me makes his movies cheap, basically the biggest expense is the salaries of him and his friends, and they make money in return.

They are effectively vacations for friends and family made incredibly cheap and enough people watch them to make more. Honestly, I almost consider it admirable, even if I don't personally have any interest in the end product. The world would be a better place if more people that made more money than they need used it to take care of friends and family instead of an endless pursuit of more. Awful films, but they're ultimately not hurting anyone so good for him.

I did end up watching Happy Gilmore 2 and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. It's not half bad, definitely some funny bits and a LOT of people who are clearly just friends of friends enjoying a chance to be in a movie. It's definitely got more heart than a lot of the legacy sequel crowd and while its not as good as the original, it's definitely not a cash grab either. Just a dumb, fun couple of hours that I enjoyed far more than I expected to.

Quatermass and the Pit 1967

Absolutely phenomenal bit of low budget shlock sci-fi, and the third in a trilogy by Hammer, adapting BBC serials.

Hammer being Hammer its modest budget is stretched to breaking point, but it’s still made with skill and care.

Simply terrific stuff.

Adam Sandler films make their money back and then some, and very, very consistently so for decades. That's the boring explanation.

A few years ago I also made up a theory, because I couldn't believe why he's still given money to make films: I like to think that he's really easy to work with and a good guy. I wouldn't watch his films, but fom what I read and given how he's getting job after job after job, I think he's just a good co-worker, and doesn't view himself as being much more than that.
