Lego, for when you want to make your 40k buying look reasonably priced

Or worse. Depending your point of view.

Also everyone knows Mega Bloks will get the IP rights first because they're smart enough to hop on those things.

Smart isn't exactly a word I'd use to describe Mattel at the moment. Also, despite not having to pay anymore for the DC license they recently lost, I doubt they can afford ANOTHER IP in the Construx Heroes line.

seriously though the hate in this thread is unbelievable, i though people in this hobby were nice and tolerable of other peoples interests especially since we are usually the butt of the "cool" peoples jokes for playing with toy soldiers

Just a thought... most people have a certain hobby budget each month. What if they go spend that collecting 40k funko models. GW will get a % of that money from the IP rental, but they won't get the 100% they would if the customer had bought real GW models.
I can't imagine it will make a dent to GW really, but the reality exists.

My Painting Blog: http://gimgamgoo.com/
Currently most played: Silent Death, Xenos Rampant, Mars Code Aurora and Battletech.
I tried dabbling with 40k9/10 again and tried AoS3 - Nice models, naff games, but I'm enjoying HH2 and loving Battletech Classic and Alpha Strike.

Product cannibalization is not a risk here. That risk happens as they launch new items each month. Deciding between Titanicus, Kill Team and Gloomspite Gitz is more likely than adding in Pops. Incremental spread of their IP is key to bring customers to core products. The funnel narrows but the $/customer increases as customers progress into the hobby.

It is ridiculous to compare the purchase of Funko or Lego products to GW models. Those other brands are pre-painted with no need for rulebooks, codex, index, chapter approved, terrain, mats, paint, glue, and all the other stuff people hemorrhage money for You actually get a complete product when you purchase a Lego set or Funko vinyl model. The only commonality is Lego-GW build instructions, which Lego's are clearly superior to GW. Lego already makes Space Marine's and other science fiction themed minis. Why would they lower themselves to Games Workshop level and pay licensing fees in the process?

Paradigm for a happy relationship with Games Workshop: Burn the books and take the models to a different game.

I’m struggling to fathom the appeal of funko pop. Or any other crap one would usually find in a lootbox/nerdcrate/geekcoffin.
Nearly identical soulless merch.. Now I would understand, why one would want a pre - painted statue of a beloved hero, at least it resembles art and might have some character. This on the other hand is basically a dummy with a particular franchise logo glued on top of it.
A grain of sand in the ocean of a future landfill. It’s just gak.

Yeah because there's no such thing as appeal with these figures and bobbleheads and the people who like them aren't as refined as you.
TFW too intelligent, amiright?

Ah, I was anticipating the “plastic soldiers” type of comments, so I’m not disappointed. Wasn’t expecting “so you think you’re better than others” replies though. I would like to point out that I described my attitude just towards “funko pop” and other similliar products, not any people who like it, nor did I make any personal comments about others.
But because I strongly dislike the concept and the look and what it is, apparently I’m a baby and too full of myself. Well folks, that’s how opinions work, indeed some people have different taste for different things.
I described my opinion, hope it’s just as ok with you as someone would have said, that he “loves funko pop”. (Apparently not)

1) but it’s a plastic toy soldiers forum- well, if you don’t see the slightest difference between modeling, wargaming and Knick-knacks, I won’t begin to describe
2) your attitude sucks- sorry, not sorry to have a strong opinion on something
3) so you think you’re so “refined”- never said anything about other people, nor my “superiority” to others
4) different people like different things- indeed

So if anyone can explain to me the appeal of funko pop and other similliar “collectibles” I would be happy to learn about it in pm

What would be the point? You don't like them, and that's 100% fine. You don't have to.

If they don't appeal to you, then they probably won't ever. I certainly never wanted any right up until the point where they made them for two of my fav characters of all time (Scorpion & Sub-Zero). Since then I've had no desire to buy any more (although a Pop Carnifex may get me over the edge), and leave it at that.

What I won't do though is start calling it gak and, in essence, judge the people who do like it as a result.

Well, I believe it`s gak, so that`s why I called it that No judging of people was done on my part. If a person thinks he`s being judged because someone else despises a knick-knack he likes, there is not much I can do.

For a starting wave, did you really expect it to be a Tau Fire Warrior, DE Wrack, Eldar Howling Banshee, and Steel Legion guardsman? Space Marines are the face of 40k.

I don't currently own and have never planned to buy any Funko Pops.

I don't currently play Dark Angels.

I am 100% likely to buy that Dark Angel Veteran Funko Pop. I think it is the shield embossment I am particularly in love with. It feels like a Watcher in the Dark armed for war.

You are not alone mate!

When I read Vinyl, Funk and Pop I though GW was releasing a phonograph record of 40k inspired funk / pop songs.

Also, very nice to get a little bit of insight in the design process for a licensed product like Funko. Cool that Sarah Kaiser is working on this, her work for WHC and Eagle Ordinary is great.

Im a DA player. And I do think the DA is the coolest one. Which is good.
May grab at some point.

Probably at NYCC when a lot get sold cheaper, whether they’ll be in the $5 wall or not who knows. But I’ll see.

Will be great to see what the following waves will be. But I think definitely moving from marines (loyal) since they said start with the iconic chapters.
But we shall see..

Actually, yes. I did expect a Cadian, Ork, Genestealer, or Hormagaunt. Even a spiky Marine. Instead we got different colored Marines.

Just be thankful they aren't all Primaris. Just one out of four isn't exactly that bad, and Mk10 looks really good.

Not to mention your complaint makes absolutely no sense seeing as all the Funko dudes are the same exact frickin size.

Funko Pops have never appealed to me. They look soulless and terrifying. Only a step down from American Girl dolls that are a dusting of ash away from looking post-apocalyptic.

Now, if they'd made 40k Nendoroids, I'd be all over that. Poseable, multiple weapon options, much cuter aesthetic.

I'm not surprised that they are all Spess Muhrines, but I confess, I am disappointed. I was really hopeful that there might be Space Marine/Ork/Chaos Marine/Guardsman in the first release, or even just Marine/Marine/Marine/Spiky Marine.

I seriously can't believe that people are complaining about other people liking POP figs. Not only are they insanely popular, we pay extra to assemble and paint our own army men! Who are we to criticize someone else's hobby?

For Mork's sake, I'm waiting on a resin Ork outhouse from a caster in French Polynesia--I can't cast aspersions on ANYONE.
