My back was pretty sore after a 4 round tournament the previous day from bending over moving models all day... but aside from that, don't see how this could be dangerous.

Like anything else, if done to excess there can be problems with one's health.

My two cents,

I haven't got a magnifying lens, but yeah that could work.

I do have a recent prescription and corrective lenses, I still sometimes have to 'zoom in' by moving my head closer to the mini to pick up on some details.

Yeah, something like operating/jewellers loops could do the trick?

I recently posted on the other thread about my knife slipping and cutting myself. Well last night I outdid myself. My exacto slipped while I was cutting a thicker piece while working on my chaos spawn conversions.

I gashed myself so bad I had to make a trip to the ER. Ended up with 6 stitches in one finger and 4 in the next. I was able to get some pics, but I don't think that is allowed on here.

Reminds me of the 'Blood Throne' I used to have around to remind me of my hobby stupidity. It was an old kitchen chair that had a cheap green vinyl seat, that was now my work table chair.

I cut myself quite badly and deeply with a hobby knife working on a kit sitting in it many years ago, and splashed a good deal of blood onto the green vinyl.

Which as a monument to my stupidity, I left there, and it stained the cheap vinyl with my sacrifice to the hobby gods. So, for many years afterwards, every time I sat down, I got a reminder to be more careful....

If you played Khorne I suspect your dice would have suddenly started rolling a lot better.

I said the same thing last night lol. Because I do play Khorne. My lady even suggested that the model I was working on get a status upgrade lol.

When I used to go to a lot of gigs that was worse for my health than wargaming has been - I have tinnitus, had a lot of dehydration and lack of sleep, as well as several concussions, asthma attacks, and bruised ribs. So far, the worst wargaming has done for me is cuts on my fingers... touch wood I don't get anything worse. Also, it's done wonders for my mental health as it gives me something to work on, enjoy, and look forward to that I can do at my own speed and level of quality without having to worry.

Also I think painting can be genuinely bad for my back..
Not sure if its just me but when I get to around 2 hours at the paining desk I'm getting upper back/shoulder/neck pains. Im 30 and in pretty good shape and regularly exercise which helps to alleviate this with stretches and movement. But if anyone has similiar issue s and has come up with some solutions im all ears

I second the person who said increase your table height - but it doesn't have to involve doing anything to your table. I have a normal height table but I sit on a low seat - I also sometimes sit on the floor to paint and use a stool as a table for the same effect. Also, it's a cliche, but regularly standing up and rolling my shoulders helps me. I also paint sat on my sofa sometimes, with cushions piled up next to me and on my lap so I can rest my arms on them and hold the model up at about my shoulder height without hunching forwards.

edited to add: I also have a light I can move around to give me the best lighting, and that definitely helps compared to when I used to have to move myself/what I'm painting into the light.

This is a thing I worry about, a lot more in the last couple of years than I did back when I started.
At the end of the day there are basic steps one can take. Dont leave superglue bottles open, or spill loads out. Make sure to dispose of dust from sanding quickly (though tbh its too big to really cause damage) and spray outdoors. I cover my mouth and nose when I spray and hold my breath when spraying until I can move a few steps away and stand up.

The other thing to remember is that your body can recover from a lot of stuff and unless you are constantly inhaling those fumes for weeks/months/years on end you are very unlikely to do lasting damage.
In other words take a break every now and then. Have a week when you dont glue or spray. Stuff like that.
Also, most plastic glues cannot really do you any harm. So long as you are not stupid.

To whomever mentioned asbestos on the first page: Thanks for bringing back my anxiety. I had a couple of scares a few years back, and its haunted me ever since.

Dust from sanding depends a lot on what KIND of dust it is.

Resin dust itself isn't innately carcinogenic, but it IS fine enough to get into your lungs and anything that gets there has the potential to do damage. Silicates are more dangerous (but more a risk for those in the ceramics hobby). Wear a dust mask when sanding, period.

Certain plastic glues CAN do you a lot of harm. Revell's Contacta went toluene free (n-butyl-acetate - it's also what gives it that citrus-y smell now) but a few out there (plasti-weld) that do contain things like toluene and/or MEK (which WILL give you cancer). Also paint propellants and solvents.
Mask with dedicated solvent fume filters.

Protective eyewear if you are removing any matter from anything. Doesn't take much to damage an eyeball.

I've taken some of the good advice offered by people here, and got myself a proper mask for spraying.

Due to the bad weather up here, and if I'm mostly doing small minis, I'll avoid spraying where possible and use brush on primer.

I use the Vallejo stuff: cheap, you get a good amount, and it comes in a variety of shades.

I'd also echo the above post. So long as you're not breathing the stuff in morning, noon, and night, you'd probably be alright with an open window if you're using superglue or plastic cement, every now and again.

Yup it's well worth getting the gear - I got a proper mask for air brushing after I found air brushing (especially when using the Vallego cleaning stuff) was making my lungs ache (!)

As Chromedog says getting some goggles is a good idea as well

These days? Probably more healthy vs the paints back in the day..

Also the old school GW models were.. heh.. modified by fire.

How many people here remember the black hydrocarbon ash rain when burning sprues or melting things.

Yes. Back then we played with lead, filed lead, cut lead, and burned plastic all without a mask.

As for the Isocyanate laced miniature paint from the late 80s early 90s. I believe it was metallic only and it was called Dragon Paint. But my Google-Fu must be weak, or no records of it exist. You wanted the best metallic paints? Those beat out anything on the market today but the toxicity was frightening.

I once snapped a miniature in place and the snap was so tight that it shot superglue right into my eye. I dropped the miniature and ran to the bathroom immediately to flush my eyes. I could feel the hardened bump on the edge of my eyeball. I was thinking, "Is this irritating bump going to be here forever?" Something I didn't realize is that your eyes have amazing defense mechanisms. Turns out, your sclera sloughs off proteins and regrows them, so the foreign body that was stuck in my eye was naturally removed. When I woke up the next morning, the superglue bump on the white of my eye was gone. I was so relieved. That was probably the most frightening thing I had happen. Of course I have stabbed myself, spray in poorly ventilated areas and sand without a mask, but the miniatures demand sacrifice!

Other than the dangers to health caused by a hobby that spends a lot of time sitting down indoors rather than getting any excercise, my main injuries have been from cutting myself on new blades. On occasion I've drilled into my finger, but not often. Never superglued an eye, but have on occasion nearly superglued my tongue to my teeth.

Also, I used to pour superglue onto cotton wool to make flame effects - that's a ferociously exothermic reaction, and the fumes are ... interesting.

Stabbing, often, well then the fact that my main army is made out of resin. But compared to my service as militia man that is all harmless.

I think my record for blood spray is 3 feet....
And the worst part was that the part I was trying to cut off turned out to be part of the model anyway!

Edit: the more i read of this thread the more i feel put at ease and unease at the same time

I've used superglue and a cotton wool ball to start a campfire once.
My chemistry teacher taught me that one at school.

Before, my uncle was also not familiar with lower back pain, even when he was sitting for long periods. Now he can't stand being in one position for a long time. The fact is that intervertebral hernias form in the spinal column with age, which leads to intolerable pain and limited mobility.

I’d say the only worrying thing about the hobby is breathing in resin dust, but that’s easily remedied with proper ventilation and a mask
