I'm personally doing just no new minis. Books that make me want to build and paint and the supplies to do so are fair game.

If you are looking to splurge on a whole colourshift set from greenstuff world that you may or may not use, id say
If you need a pot to finish the job i think thats reasonable. But do your challange however you wana or dont do it at all.
Its a free world, do or dont, up to each individual and not eveeybody thinks the same. For me its a worthwhile excercise.

I looked at my backlog, and it consists of two Gladiators that I didn;t really want but were part of the blister from Crusader, and 4 Airships from Dystopian Wars. If I finish these 6 models, I will die....... according to Gamer legend.
I think I need to do the opposite and actually buy a model or two!

Paints/glue/getting the grey horde painted is always "not a hobby purchase" unless its a new kit!
I'm on a no buy GW related few months since the last titan purchase

Thats true. But thers a difference between buying 2 colourshift paint sets from greenstuff world because 'might be useful' them and buying 1 pot of waagh green and some glue was my point..
SO far so good. Still have not technicaly bought anything. Im trading a venom crawler i was going to sell for some eldar. Pretty sure that doesnt count as I already had the venom crawler...

I have more boxes of GW products than most independent retailers.
It's not really a problem. Esp when we are talking about large models. My knights are a sum total of 60 bucks cheaper than they are now. Even my boxes of tacticals, etc represent a savings of hundreds when combined vs today's prices.
When it comes to GW stuff, nothing wrong with stacking a bit deep and working through it.
Over all it will actually save you money since GW is always jacking prices.

That assumes that you bought *exactly* what you want, and actually build it and play with it. If it's $1,000s of deadweight inventory, that never gets built or played, then it's not really saving money.
In my case, I made a conscious effort to clear out ALL of my boxes by building, sale, or trade. I have less unbuilt stuff today than I've had in decades.

Seeing GW ups price more than inflation that should be covered.

40 day only? hah.
I gave myself a New Year resolution to not buy any new kit at least until August.
I bought a couple of second-hand kits and have 40 guardsmen on the way as a reward for commission painting.
I still didn't buy anything new...

I just pledged for the DreamForge Games "Grav-StuG", because I want to see the kit made more than I "need" it. I will build it within a month of receiving it. ___ ETA - it didn't fund, so not spent

I failed, I bought two successor armies from Baccus 6mm.
However, prior to that I went about 6 months with no purchases!

Hey.....I'm ashamed to say.... I failed also... :(
I got a bonesinger with 7 different OOP warlocks/farseers as a bundle on ebay. I've been hunting for a resonably priced bonesinger for ages. I'm also building a mad warlock conclave list. I just couldn't pass it up...It was such a good value for money I just could not say no.
However the cost came out of my paypal balance I have earned from buying/flipping models on ebay so technically I haven't spent any real money...
So does this count as a fail?? Automatically Appended Next Post: Otherwise it means I have lasted a grand total of 12 days which is incredibly poor...

Rygnan wrote:Ok, jumping in on this. Setting some goals for myself to achieve by the end of April
-Purchase:paint ratio to be 1:4 at least. Allows me to pick up a few things I've been eyeing off, but not to go mental and splurge
-Complete projects by faction/game.
-Don't start projects until others are complete
So my plan then is as follows, starting with what I'm working on now
-Finish my League of Assassins for Batman. 5 models and an objective marker, all part painted, 3/5 not far from completion. Easy goal
-Finish my Arena Rex cohort. 1 model only, easy goal
-Finish my Suicide Squad. 4 models, no paint on them. Relatively easy goal
-Finish my Brave and the Bold/Team Arrow. Lots of overlap here, only 5 models but they all need a lot of basing work before paint. Motivation is the barrier here but the goal is doable
-Finally, make a start on my Gorilla Grodd crew. 4 models but I need to buy resin bases for them (still counting towards total purchases) before I can paint. With this I am back to 100% painted for Batman and Arena Rex, and can thus move on to other projects needing completion
Just about 2 weeks in, not going that great. I've only bought 1 model so keeping fine on that front, but in terms of clearing the backlog progress is slow. Still working away on my League of Assassins and about half done, but losing motivation to continue. Might end up swapping projects to something later down the list as a refresher to pick up the mojo again

I might have about 300 bucks in stuff in the shop on lay away. After that, it's time for a sale,. and I might have to stick to the smaller games, so it might be time to fill up the swap threads...
GW finally did it. They broke my wallet, and I'm tapping out on "NEW" since the price hike. I'm just lucky my shop let me grab the stuff when the grabbing was good, and I can get it paid off in a month or so. Its a shame too, since those new models are absolutely stunning. If anything, I'll probably trade for new lickies and chewies.
Won't be 40 days, its more like not buying for the next year or so. We'll see how it goes when others take my lead, but my other local shop is already feeling the pinch. And between GW, and comic books, they are feeling the pain more then the regular customers...
I tell you another tale- 2d edition, and Rogue Trader isn't looking too bad right now to get back into....
Second hand.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Another failure. Local 40k group starting escalation league and with orks painting front "very well" I decided I could use this as excuse to get the necrons I have had lying around waiting for their turn to be painted ready. So dominion spearhead which will give all I need for first 3 months of league(important as I'll be part time in Japan so little time to paint then) and material I need for basing.
Ah well. At least another project gets into reality.

I was getting some pressure locally to get back into AoS after it not really working for me the first time. I have a plan to do so but it requires a decent investment in Sylvaneth. Luckily, recent announcements have given me an excuse to delay.
As for April goals, my number 1 is to get Gearhart and the Infantry done for my Crucible Guard. I've got a few Batman models I'd like to have done too, but they really don't have to be done until the end of May.

Still goin strong. Sold a bunch of models and haven't bought any yet. I'm on the fence about minis heading out buying minis being a good idea.
Gonna keep chipping away at the backlog and maybe use those funds to reward myself with something to add to a finished pile of shame.

If you have a significant backlog, then selling to buy isn't a good idea - you're just churning the unbuilt pile.
OTOH, if you are selling things that you don't want to build, in order to buy the odds and ends that "complete" something that you build upon receipt, then that's OK - you're reducing the unbuilt pile, although a bit slower than you otherwise would.

Apart from the Bonessinger & pals bundle nothing else.
Steady progress has been made. 10 rangers nearly finished...
Painting failcast infantry is such a pain. Theres so many ugly miscasts you spot once you start putting paint on. Why GW why!!!!!!?
If I can make it till the end of April and not spend any bank account money whilst flipping off the bits I don't want I'll call that a win. Feels like I'm just telling myself this.

This best captures my situation and I think you're right. I'm going to stick to the no new models in 2019 plan with only the rare exception (centerpiece model unit to build paint immediately to cap off a successful project, Sauron for my Middle Earth evil army as an example)
