That video looks familiar...

That's really cool news about the spiders being mountable!
I have a good feeling there's going to be a lot of fun conversions with them- I already can feel the cogs turning with ideas!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

1. I am super excited for the spiders and their myriad possibilities.

2. That goblin is wild. It looks like a winning “Baker’s Choice” selection from Nailed It. It looks like the kind of ancient artwork you see in a museum, like how you’ll see a giraffe carved by an artisan who was never within 500 miles of a giraffe. It’s growing on me.

So they can be posed to bunch up on smaller bases? (What does that disc represent? 30mm?) That's a good thing. I've had a few bug minis with legs that splay so much I had trouble fitting them on any reasonable base.

You might be sick of hearing this, but... are they still sticking with that wibbly skin on the goblins?

Looking forward to see what's going on with the chariot.

Also glad to see that the spiders will be mountable, do we know how big they will be? Fit on 25x50mm bases?

he Einherjar faction for Death Fields (Vikings who were taken from their ship after a raid on Wessex and have been on the Death Fields circuit for over 1500 years. During this time their owner settled them on a high gravity world and over the centuries this has resulted in them becoming more short and squat.) This was one of the earlier sets that we designed - sculpted by Rob Macfarlane who did the Dark Age Irish. We've held back on their release as we weren't sure how popular they would be. Has the time come?

Hmmm almost dwarf guard? remnant squats, Forge Fathers (ironic lower cost alternatives for mantic minis might now be appropriate)

I think they'd sell (even if it's just for space biker heads)

edit: although they do have knees so some classic dwarf lovers may dissaprove

I kind of like them. Not sure I'd get many given how many other projects I have laying around, but this would be the most cost effective way to make a squat army, that's for sure. They look good, definitely shorter, but not so tiny they look comical.

I'd probably get a box if only as a painting project, but I have no idea how well they'd do. They're definitely not going to do as well as the grognards, since you have to actively think of ways to not use that kit, it's just so flexible. But, they've got a neat look to them and the little details like the shields, axes, and horn are great nods to their origin without being over the top. I think you'd see a cult following amongst squat fans from 40k, this is the kit they've been praying for, and since they'd be used as IG anyone using them for an army would buy multiple boxes. But would you sell enough to cover the cost of the mold? That I'm not so sure of.

As it is, I would say that kit looks good to go, I don't see any weapons, bits, or gear that look bad in it. All it's missing is a melta (unless that's what that shotgun looking weapon is) That looks like a really solid sprue you could get a ton of milage out of thanks to the head variety. Once you made a heavy weapon kit they'd make a very solid looking army and would probably look great on the table. If you guys felt it would do well I'd say go for it, it looks good. For what it's worth, I think this looks like a better kit than the grognards. The grognards have some awesome bits mixed with some meh ones. Meanwhile this one just looks good overall, not a bad bit in the bunch. Whereas your other kits I would mod heavily before putting them on the table, I could see myself running these as is out of the box and being completely happy with them.

Edit: kept accidentally hitting submit before I was done

I’d most likely get a box, but I wouldn’t rush out and buy it in release day. I’m not a huge fan of their heads, but I have enough Forge Fathers and Grognard masked heads go make it work. Maybe an arbitrator head...

I really like how consistent their weapons and body armor are with the Guard aesthetic.

Mantic already makes good HIPS space dwarfs (heads could be better, agreed) so not a high priority kit. People who are willing to buy non-GW probably already have their fill.

Not a lot of guard style squats out there, especially loosely based on the old GW ones like these are. I like them

I’ve never been into squats, but I like them.
I do think the kit would be a lot more flexible if the were human sized though.
Especially because of very nice lasgun variation and special weapon arms.
Of course that doesn’t mean they’d necessarily sell any better mind you.
As mentioned shovel the market is quite satturated with IG proxies already.

Perhaps going the oppositie direction would be a better route.
Tweaking the designs a bit to keep the light armoured IG feel but aesthetically fit with the Mantic designs a bit better.
Would potentially open up a bigger market.

I can see the need for less armoured ForgeFather Militia next to the heavy armoured Mantic models

but overall, a Viking themed normal unit to make Space Wolves players happy as they get finally a themed Imperial Guard might be the better option

It seems to have some nice options, I especially like that it seems there is an axe for both right and left arms, which means you could have some models going full berserker in the middle of a guard like unit.

Honestly, I would have prefered human-sized space Vikings. Would have made for some nice ice and/or sea planet-themed IG regiments, or maybe Fenrisian PDF (if there is such a thing)

True, although it would also be nice in general to have dwarves/squats that are not based on nordic cultures/vikings, as it is usually the case.

What I find funny is that Dwarves will amost always be Scandinavian by culture but Scottish by accent. Where does this trope originate? Is it because Gimli had a Scottish accent in the LOTR movies, or older than that?

As far as I know, it originated in 1953 Poul Anderson novella "Three Hearts and Three Lions", which Gary Gygax liked a lot (to the point of recommending it on his Appendys N) and modeled their dwarfs like there. D&D Popularity simply made the rest.

Dwarfs are common all over Europe

There is the Dwarf King Laurin from the Alps who fought with Theodoric the Great

while in the Nibelungenlied Dwarfs are of Norwegian origin

in the Austrian myths, Dwarfs are more like spirits of the mountain with strong magical abbilities

Good question, my Scandinavian folklore is pretty poor (read: something I read about 10-15 years ago...vaguely) but dwarfs actually feature in Scandinavian lore - the corners of the world being held up by four dwarfs, which is where we actually get our North/South/East/West names from (distant relatives of course). Something like that, so...maybe that's a minor connection.

Small clip from google: According to the ancient Norse religion, four dwarfs — Austri, Vestri, Sudri, and Nordri — held up the four corners of the earth...

Sure, but I was wondering why they always seem to be voice-acted with a Scottish rather than, say, a Swedish accent.

I think that solidified in the 90's with the original Warcraft game.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were traced back to something like Time Bandits (1981), where all the little people had different english accents.
Or the brownies that were in Legend (1985) maybe.

edit: Also there is the trope from Star Trek of Scottish engineers, and the trope of Dwarfish engineering... connect the 2 and voila!
